Mine is an anagram. I always liked to play Scrabble, even did it in a competitive manner at some point. It is also somewhat 'ancient sounding', and I used it when playing Dungeons and Dragons when I was a teenager. Oh man, this was a long time ago... Now I decided to tame the financial beast...

Harbin or thereabouts. I know that my mother was born in Changchun, which is close to Harbin. I believe the family later lived in Tianjin (formerly Tientsin).

When I joined the message board, I was feeling unusually cautious because of an upcoming career decision, so I wanted to use a handle that I wasn't using on any other message boards. But I didn't want a username that was so obscure that I might not recognize it as "my name". So I picked a name corresponding to an alter ego of sorts from high school (first name Amanda, last name starting with a T). It's been decades since anyone (outside of this site) has called me Mandy, but I still identify with it.

My username was meant to be unremarkable. Merely a unique identification that is disconnected from any kind of online identity. That it has any meaning, even for me, was just a convenient choice from some reading material that I was browsing at the time I created my account.

When I went back to school some years ago at the ripe old age of 35 for a degree in IT (trained in finance, worked in finance operations for 10+ years and then migrated into IT in the finance industry, first as an analyst and then as a project manager), I had a professor teaching Oracle databases who used to use BobDaBlob as his "default" for sample data...it just sounded funny to me and I started using it as a throwaway email address...it eventually became my username on the very few forums like this that I belong to.

When I started my first job, there was an employee that worked for the same corporation with the same first and last name as me and the same middle initial. So when my email was assigned to me, my middle initial was replaced with an "X". Co-workers joked that it stood for Xanadu, and the nickname stuck.

People ask me whether "Toto" is a reference to the classic 1939 Judy Garland film, "The Wizard of Oz" (or the Frank Baum novel on which it was based), or the fantastic band "Toto" that has won 6 Grammies, and wrote great hits such as "Rosanna" and "Africa".

And I always answer the same way.

Wow......this brings back a few memories. I nearly forgot about those days. Yes....I still have my CB license....from mid 1970's. In fact, I still have the two CB radios that I used for a few years. I suppose it is time to donate those those old bugger to the _______________?

You should upgrade to the larger gold certificates ( from the thirties). They had a bit of an orange tinge to them (saw one back in the seventies when a sibling got one in change)

Mine means that I made my first investment with Vanguard in 1987. Of course, the concept of a "Boglehead" didn't even exist back then.

But looking back, in spirit at least, I was one then!

And I'm glad I was! And still am one!

The "extra" money I used to make always went to some expense for the horses. Since I have become a BH, any extra money has been stashed, and I've managed to turn several of the horses back into cash. Still have four and one is due to foal next month. I'm not where I need to be but thank God I'm not where I used to be!

Fascinating to hear the backstories of all your handles. Some are very thought provoking. Mine...not so much.

It is my first name plus a reference to a life-long hobby.

Mine is from an old favorite Heinlein book, and I thought it would fit with a finance-focused forum. I have noticed that another member uses is as a signature line, so I hope they don't mind me accidentally stealing it.

Have much more investable money since it's departure. 1987 Buick Grand National. For any that don't know, the GN's claim to fame was it's motor, a 3.8 liter turbo V6, that made it very fast relative to its late 80's competition.

I like alliteration. A lot. Allow me to elaborate. The 2 F sounds just work.
I share my thoughts on FIRE. Financial Independence. Retire Early.
“on FIRE” or “en fuego” is often used to indicate things are going really well.
