I'm going to derail the thread a bit and take my usual stance of ask for forgiveness and allow sscritic back on this forum. His wealth of knowledge was greater then anyone else on a topic that is so important for many.
Good luck.
If I were banned anywhere, I would not return there no matter what.

Agree. Why was he banned?
Kind Regards,
We don't know.
I was also a fan of sscritic and we met for dinner in SoCal a few years ago.
I was half joking about the sarcasm thing, but "Don't bite the Newbies" is part of our guideline thing here.
So check their post count before asking if they googled first, etc...
Question: How would we know if anyone was banned? Is there a list somewhere?
Otherwise who knows why a user just abruptly stopped posting.
I guess it was more than me who missed the wit.
Okay I guess I am derailing this even further, but this is an excellent question. Can the mods reply and let us know how/ if any way we can know a poster has been banned?
Good luck.

It's not even been two weeks and it was just the annual Boglehead conference time. It's highly likely that Livesoft is just traveling and relaxing, rather than sitting at a computer. He's allowed that luxury. I know I don't bother to check this forum when I'm traveling.

I doubt any info will be forthcoming on a private matter like this.
Bannings are not usually done lightly, with the exception of obvious spam...

I believe you can tell if a poster is banned by trying to send that poster a PM. If they are banned, you cannot send them a PM. You can also look at the list of usernames. If that username has disappeared, they are no longer registered.

I mean, I guess the "banned" poster would simply create a new username.

Thanks for the answer. That clear that up.
Now back to where is Livesoft... Sort of like where is Waldo...
All kidding aside it is good we inquire where our usual members are if they have not been heard from recent. If I remember correctly a couple years of Bob from Bob's financial website or something who was on here as "Bobsnotmyname" or something like that expired and we didn't find out for awhile when he was no longer posting. So, unfortunately, it does happen. Not saying that is Livesoft situation, but good to keep track of our internet friends.
Good luck.

Ghost or mistaken identity?
Staythecourse might be thinking of bob90245, who was a frequent and much-valued poster on withdrawal systems and safe withdrawal rates, and had a website--now defunct, it's a generic domain-for-sale site now--bobsfinancialwebsite.com. He stopped posting, and the website went down some months later. The website didn't have any real-world ID although he mentioned that 90245 was his zip code. I don't think anyone ever found out for sure what happened.

Perhaps livesoft has logged in as a hidden user and is not posting. Hidden users will show activity on the profile (e.g. Last Active field) but not show up on active user lists. If that's the case, he has likely chosen to be hidden for a reason and we should respect his privacy.

Oh dear... My bad!! Yes you are correct that I am incorrect. Apologies to the alive Bobsnotmyname. Also yes Nisi is correct (as usual) to whom I was referring.
Good luck.

Livesoft has been one of the most helpful members of this site to me, but I think 10 days is a bit premature to worry. And for those who did not read the entire thread:
LIVESOFT WAS APPARENTLY EATING DINNER WITH JACK BOGLE DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. (As indicated by user abuss368)
abuss368 wrote:He and I are having dinner with Mr. Bogle right now.
NO FURTHER WORRY ABOUT LIVESOFT NEEDED.
(Hopefully those who skip through posts without reading will take notice of this one.)

I miss SScritic too , very knowledgeable and I get the feeling he knows Livesoft outside this forum ?? - didn't type fast enough , thanks for the update !!!

If they were actually having dinner with Mr. Bogle right then, would they be posting? I think abuss368 may have been kidding. We just don't know. And then there is the source up thread who says Livesoft is in Mexico reading for pleasure....but is this source reliable? Where is the evidence? I think as the days tick by the plot thickens and the mystery deepens. We just don't know where Livesoft is......

I presumed that it was one of those, "I am posting this as I am stepping in" sorts of things. As far as the rest, should we send someone to Mexico to track him down? Any volunteers?

I like sarcasm, maybe because I am sarcastic, maybe because it makes his posts' more pointed. People who wonder where livesoft is yet pose concern as to Livesoft's whereabouts are confused though.
It's out of character; I'd like to assume he's having a RGF away from the forum, whatever he's doing. I look forward to his return. (Really Good Fortnight)
At least he knows the Bogleheads miss him. All those posts.........the genuinely useful information, notices of RBDs, truly useful explanations about tax loss harvesting, talk of the benefits of oatmeal for breakfast and pull-ups, the sarcasm, the wit. It's just not the same......

I'm not a moderator and I don't call the shots. I'll note that forum policy uses the language "Non-actionable (Trolling) Topics" and says "If readers can't do anything with the content of a topic other than argue about it, it does not belong here." In other words, it is an effort to prohibit trolling, but it tries to define trolling behavior as objectively as possible, in a way that does not require assessing motives. Also, the policy for the community section includes "news, events, and announcements which affect the Bogleheads community" as an acceptable topic. The moderators are obviously aware of the thread.

One thing that many of us like about this community is that it IS a community. As a moderator commented on this thread, you can take that to mean they see this type of post as ok (concern over members). We do not know each other's faces, but we often know each other's personalities. One of the reasons that I like this forum is that people genuinely care here. Some of us would not be missed, as we are sometimes posters, but it is good to know that key posters are important. (Also, I suspect livesoft is responsible for a lot of the traffic directed at this site through Google searches.)

c. I dont know how to define trolling or not, but a lot of posts are locked even if they dont seem trolling. NEverhtheless, it seems very odd that this one isnt locked, but good luck to those looking for this individual, and best wishes to others. Strange thread?
Sorry for the delay. Let's lock the thread now (topic exhausted). See: Locked Topics
Moderators or site admins may lock a topic (set it so no more replies may be added) when a violation of posting policy has occurred. Occasionally, even if there are no overt violations of posting policy, a topic (or thread) will reach a point where the information content of the discussion has been essentially exhausted and further replies are much more likely to cause distress to the community than add anything of value.
