I did the Napoleon! We crossed the Pyrenees on the 12th of April, the first ones this season. The local authorities have officially closed the Napoleon Route between November and the end of March, but even in early April the Pilgrims' Office at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port was advising against it. The snow was covering the trail and there were gale force winds on the top.

However, I was very fortunate. On the night of the 11th, I stayed at Orisson, an albergue on the French side of the Pyrenees. That day, while I was walking from SJPP to Orisson, the owner of Orisson Jean-Jaques and a few of his friends went to the most difficult parts of the Napoleon Route and created a narrow trail. On the 12th Jean-Jaques guided us through the tricky parts. The weather was sunny with perfect visibility of the mountain terrain, but the wind was bad. Really bad. But when the day was over I was very happy and proud of myself.
Hi Victoria!
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip hiking el Camino (does one hike or walk the Camino?). But quite frankly, this does not sound safe. The route was officially closed due to snow on the trail and gale force winds? the most difficult parts of the trail in mountain terrain were narrow and tricky? and the wind was really bad?? Perhaps next year a relaxing cruise 8-)

While you were gone, I retired.

The surprise to me was how difficult it was to retire after 35 years in my profession. Although I worked with a wonderful office and colleagues, I was always exhausted, my job was years of unremitting stress, often away from my family, and I really was burned-out. How could retiring be difficult, full of agony and angst?

Sometimes we become our work, our life is our work, we worked so hard to attain that profession - and retiring means we are getting older, we are leaving one life and beginning another, life is moving on and change is upon us. I was afraid of the change, of me and all I learned in my profession "blowing in the wind."

I am now 2 months retired. It feels wonderful. What a relief. A life of good work and a retirement well deserved is how I see it. Please record me in the good book for July 1, 2016 :happy

An exceptionally concise and heartfelt summation of what many have felt and some still feel.

This week marks one year since my own retirement.

I have not yet resolved the angst that I tried to expunge via posts on this forum a couple of months before my last day.

It's all right, though—I'm all right.

Now, we relearn to live our lives.

Someday, we will have to learn to die.

I said, someday.

congratulations on your recent retirement!

Retiring at the end of this year, shortly before my 63rd birthday. Last day at work is Dec. 16. This is the beginning of our normal Christmas / New Year holiday break, so I won't actually feel like I'm retired until Jan. 2.

Hi Victoria,

I happily retired July 1 2016 and have been enjoying the past few months decompressing and doing things that I truly enjoy - gardening, local hikes, cycling, etc. Really excited to be past the daily grind and on to a daily discovery!

Take care,
Mike

Stepping down from a 36-year job qualifies as a retirement, regardless of whether you would be drawing money from retirement accounts. I added you to the list above.

Cheers,
Victoria
Follow-up: discussed with my superior, there's a better-than-even chance that it will be in my best interest to be officially "on staff" on Dec 31, so I agreed to remain until Jan 3. I guess this means I'll be in the Class of 2017, not 2016. Oh, well ...

DH and I both graduated from slave-wagery this year - May 2016 for him. I still teach (online) but only when I feel like it. As far as I'm concerned, that makes me retired as well!

Retirement Class of 2016 - COBRA benefit discovered

Post by informal guide »

I retired from a long term financial services job January 31 of 2016, at just over 63 1/2. Talk about reduced stress! But on the other hand,I certainly have needed to and have enjoyed being proactive in business-related and social interactions.

I discovered a neat little health care quirk of my retirement date, courtesy of my former company's benefit specialist, relevant for me because my spouse is over 5 years younger than me. I (with my wife) continue to be eligible for my former company's fine health care plan under COBRA (Although I now pay full freight). When I turn 65, I will enroll in Medicare. The quirk is that my enrolling in medicare is defined for COBRA terms as a qualifying event, When I enroll in Medicare, it will restart the 18 month COBRA clock for my wife - so she will have 36 months of fine coverage before having to choose another option.

May 1st for me. 32 years of service. Loved most every single day. I'm enjoying retirement even more, though sometimes miss the excitement when I hear of a critical incident.

Checking in retired April 30th, 2016. The time has went by so fast I can't believe it. I worked part time as I wanted too for a research center. I worked because I wanted to be around people not that I had to work. Lol

I helped a few ranchers of and on this summer also. I spent time at my small ranch and cabin and it was heaven. I haven't missed one day of work from a place I worked for 35 years. I missed a few people but that is about it. I go by the company building a lot and never have stopped since I left.

Retirement is priceless.

Last day of work on 12/8/2016. Been working overseas, still have about half my net worth to exchange into dollars and wire to Vanguard. The recent election has set the dollar soaring and me scrambling to make sure I can retire with a much smaller nut. And then there's the ACA health insurance I just enrolled in.... Still, super excited!

Posting for my husband Winnie who's retired as of December 15. He's not a Boglehead, yet, only passively through me. He's an ecologist and taught at a uni for over 40 years. This time last year he couldn't imagine himself retired, but the uni decided it for him.

At the moment, he's outside communing with nature. He's practicing his golf swing and has spent holiday week studying up on golfing techniques.

I never would have believed it a year ago.

Thanks for the updated list 22twain. I love it when retirees include their age; makes it more relevant for me as I consider when I will join the ranks.
    Congrats to all! :sharebeer

Would be nice to see a 1 year "reunion" thread for each retirement class to hear how the classmates adjusted, spent their time, and if they have any pearls of wisdom to share for those that follow.

With DH officially retired (51) as of yesterday (3/3/2017) I decided to post. :happy My last day of work was Oct. 28, 2016 @ age 49.

So thankful we found this forum and thankful, too, to the members for sharing your wisdom and advice and giving us the insight and courage to take the plunge. Reading the "do I have enough?" threads in addition to the threads where people said their only regret was "not retiring earlier" helped in our decision-making process.

Retirement plans include travel, time spent outdoors and time with family.

H retired in 12/2012 and then was hired to work for an additional 6 months. Honestly I’m not sure when I “retired” or if I have. I started a nonprofit I love in 2007 and have been running it full time and now part time ever since. I am also engaged in public health organizations related to my nonprofit locally and nationally. I do it for love and even get some compensation that I put into a Backdoor Roth IRA.

I have great flexibility in hours and how much or little I want to work. If I was going to volunteer, I’d be basically doing what I’m doing now. If I wanted to, I could close up everything with very little notice, but since I enjoy it, I have no plans to do so. We travel as much as we want and enjoy life. We don’t need my income but it’s nice to be compensated for work done—sometimes it’s more valued than “just volunteers.”

I retired from the federal government in August 2016 with the intention of returning to school and developing a post-retirement career. As my retirement income stream clarified, my wife and I looked at each other and said "what post-retirement career? Why bother?"

I'm still in school for fun (dialed the pace back a bit though), but have no intention of working for pay ever again. Made that decision a couple months ago.
I retired in Oct 2016 and started working towards my next career. We soon realized that our finances were good and our life was much better without me working long days. Decided to fully retire and now spend more time with the family and some of our favorite charitable causes. Life is good.

Fun to see this thread brought back to life. Retirement had a tough start in early 2017 due to family health issues, death on wife's side of family (and resultant prolonged executor duties), a health insurance FUBAR, and a few other issues. But as the year went on, those issues have worked towards resolution or were resolved, and good times, travel, a strong stock market, renewal of activities, progress on house honey-do's, etc, have ensued. I must say that after 37 years in the federal government, working for one agency starting in summer seasons in college, seasonally after college for six years, and later as a career track from near bottom to a high HQ level, it was a great journey but one that, upon 'finishing', I do not miss. I'll leave it at that.

OK google, what's the weather tomorrow, I feel like surfing! 8-)

Congratulations and welcome to the Class of 2016! Please give us date and age if you wish.

I understand fully your comment that "our life was much better without me working long days." There just comes a time when long hours of work take too much available life and simply sour what life we have left.

Sounds like a wonderful retirement - more time with family and favorite charitable causes :happy

Yes, it is fun to come back to the retirement series from time to time [way much better than reading the same old "indexing goooood, active management baaaaad" conversations]. Already then, have a Merry Christmas and thanks for reading.

HIinvestor - see if this explanation of "retirement" helps 8-)

The Retirement Roll Call uses Lady Victoria's definition of "retirement" = there is no strict definition :D

According to the Lady, a Boglehead's inclusion in the Roll Call is based on self-reporting.

In other words, if you feel you are retired, even though you are still busy, doing temporary work, training your poor replacements for your irreplaceable position, engaged in easy work or a hobby, paid or unpaid or underpaid - when you feel you have punched out of the rat race - then you are retired :D :D

I have been traveling, getting in shape (no more road warrior diet) and doing some volunteer work writing software. It has been pretty good so far.

    Thanks for asking :happy
