Thanks. After 38 years with Megacorp I've quite forgotten who I was. I'll have to figure that out again. The future looms large in front of me now. After being retired only one month I can say my stress level is approaching zero!
Retirement brings its own stressors. I don't mean a financial stress: most Bogleheads have a well planned and financially secure retirement. But there are risks of binging on the opportunities offered by retirement, or getting paralyzed into idleness by too many opportunities. Take time to figure out what's important to you and how to pursue it. And then go for it. Good luck!

Nice trip!
Please add me to this year's class- retired from megacorp as of January 10, age 56. It feels good- the last two years at work took a lot out of me (more than I realized at the time), and I am very happy to move on to the next chapter of my life.
Best,

Quibble, indeed... I wonder why it is that our age at retirement seems so important. It felt that way for me, too. When reporting on my upcoming retirement:
in early August, I wrote:
Five-Nine and three, and done!
  • (See topic Enough is enough, below)
I was proud to have achieved this end—retiring from a job I didn't much care for—at age 59 and three months, just a few months shy of the 25 year obligatory CEO handshake and gift. An intentional act on my part. But I would have been equally happy with
  • "Sixty-six and nought!" -or-

    "Seventy-one and moving on..." -or-

    "34 and Part-time!"
It's all good. or is it?

Buyer's Remorse

The cusp of retirement can be emotionally tumultuous. I experienced some of that shortly before I said goodbye.

In a post written a month before I was scheduled to retire I envisioned myself at home, listless, unmotivated and in a daze; ruminating about my career and mourning the loss of the idealism I once possessed.

I know I'm not the person I was. Who am I supposed to be now? *

(See topic Non-Retirees: Scared about retirement?, below)

* (I still don't have an answer. I've given myself a year to work it out...)

Congrats to all of you! :beer

digarei,

Thank you for a summary post addressing the concerns and fears of Boglehead retirees! I've been there, I've done that, and now I know that "no worries" is the right answer.

Recent Retirees,

My congratulations and best wishes for a great start of your real adult life. I was not here to congratulate you on the actual day of your retirement, because I was busy enjoying my retirement elsewhere. Life is good!

Not sure I'm calling it "retirement" per se, but I am stepping down from my job of 36 years on December 16. May do some part time for them, and I'm not planning to draw from retirement accounts; does it still count as "retirement"?
It’s taken me a lot of years, but I’ve come around to this: If you’re dumb, surround yourself with smart people. And if you’re smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you.

Stepping down from a 36-year job qualifies as a retirement, regardless of whether you would be drawing money from retirement accounts. I added you to the list above.

I did just retire on 7/5/2016 at 56 years of age. Into my first week, so far so good. It seems like a regular vacation, not retirement yet. I had a long weekend, one day of work, then another long weekend so far.

Congratulations! In retirement every day is Saturday. My recommendation is to STAY busy physically and mentally, plus keep a non-fiction book with you at all times [we are never too senior to learn]. Let me close for the day, I am staying busy and getting ready to hit the California roads on a very long drive. Thanks for reading.

Howdy.

I beg leave to join this distinguished assemblage.

I received my diploma on June 2 after 40 years kicking around all over the world as a petroleum geologist.

So far so good!

Good luck all.

Victoria?

Are us 2016 retirees getting a nice plaque? A key-chain perhaps? Maybe a thumb drive? Seems only right.

I wrote about my angst over retiring last November, and the advice and comments were a big help to me.
viewtopic.php?t=178155

Well, I turned 65 in May, and I've told my law firm that I'm retiring as of August 31, 2016. That is 30 years, to the day, that I formed the firm. Hardly an "early" retirement based on that number, but it feels early to me, subjectively. I has taken me three years to reach this decision.

I plan to stay on as "of counsel" after that, but I'll no longer be a partner, and I won't be handling any litigation or partner issues. I'll have no performance obligations to the firm (no billing requirements). My tentative plan is to write and teach on copyright law (an area of law that's of particular interest to me), and come into the office one day a week, if that. I'm afraid to go "cold turkey" on work, so this is my way of keeping minimally involved. I'm not counting on being paid much, if anything, by the firm.

I like to say that law practice would be OK if it weren't for clients, partners, opposing counsel and judges. I'll have almost none of those. If I don't like a client, I won't work with it. And, if it doesn't work out, I'll withdraw completely. I'll have to see how this works out. If it doesn't I'm gone.

Well, I turned 65 in May, and I've told my law firm that I'm retiring as of August 31, 2016. That is 30 years, to the day, that I formed the firm. Hardly an "early" retirement based on that number, but it feels early to me, subjectively. I has taken me three years to reach this decision.
Small Law Survivor,

Congratulations with making the decision! I enrolled you in the class.

According to the Bogleheads wisdom you will be fine in retirement. Enjoy it, and report here about your new pursuits and achievements.

Good morning,

My first day of retirement was May 5, 2016 at the age of 64. \\\\//// - me doing the happy dance.

What really amazes me is that I didn't realize how unhappy I was working, until I wasn't anymore. Oh, and I don't have to get up at 4:45 a.m. Yeah!

Not a big time contributor, but a long time reader. Thank you.

I started the thread for the class of 2017 but now you can add me to the class of 2016. July 29, 2016 to be exact.

Got laid off from my IT job due to offshoring to India last Friday. Saw it coming but it was more of a psychological jolt than I anticipated. I'm just recovering from a 2 day hangover.

With severance pay my paychecks stop only 5 months before my planned date in 2017 so it's not a big deal financially.

Now I'm looking forward to the alarm clock not going off at 5:20 AM and figuring out what to do next.

Welcome to the Class, invst65!

Perhaps, a forced retirement a few months before your planned date is not such a bad thing. You won't be tempted by "one more year" and won't have any regrets.

Enjoy your retired life without an alarm clock,

My recommendation is to let the alarm go off, get up, get your workout gear on, and go out for a LUng Distance workout [running or walking], that's the best way to start the day. In retirement we must stay mentally and physically active.

Thanks for reading.

p.s. I just came back from a great LUng Distance workout.

OK, it's looking like 12/30/16 is my last day of work for Uncle Sam, 36.75 total years of service for one noble agency. No VERA/VISA retirement incentive offering until Q3FY17 or FY18 is the rumor, but I'm not going to hang on for that. After all, "Time > $". I'll be reviewing Victoria's famous thread on Preparing to Retire Checklist as part of my planning over the next few months. ( viewtopic.php?f=2&t=126968 ). I look forward to more swim, bike, run competition and workouts with friends (fairly intensive triathlon training for an old guy), long bike trips (hopefully overseas tours too), motorcycle camping/touring trips, further developing paragliding flying and cross-country (long flight) skills, putting up a new fence and other assorted home projects, ocean bodysurfing and board surfing, and some volunteer work, as well as plenty of honey-do's for my honey who is still working a few more years. It's going to be mostly like summer vacation forever. Bring it on! :beer

Congratulations to all for your successful coming of age - whatever it is. For me, August 31st and a wake up after nearly 32 years with the federal government. At times, it's been a real slog. But, I acknowledge the blessing it has been too. Currently, I'm feeling a little apprehensive about what is to follow. A good FERS pension, supplement until age 62, TSP, sensible spending habits and eventual SS mean finances aren't a real concern at the moment. Finding a new WAY is the rub. Decompression comes first and then we'll see.

I'm planning to retire on September 23, 2016 culminating 50 years of full-time, professional employment in budget and finance. I'm blessed with a loving wife and 48 years of happy marriage, good health, and many outside interests so I think the transition to retiree status will be a pleasant one. I want to especially thank all the Bogleheads for the wisdom they have provided. Best wishes to all.

As of August 31st, after 43 years, two months, and 9 days of working for the man:

My life has begun a new phase
Where I own the hours and days.
With no more tick-tock
From the old office clock,
I'm out of the doggoned rat race.

I've built up a nice IRA.
My government checks I'll delay.
I've pensions enough
To afford needful stuff,
And just a bit extra for play.
