what gender are you?

Post by dolphinsaremammals » Wed Aug 06, 2014 10:14 am

I sometimes find myself surprised at the gender of a boglehead, based on the mental image I have formed of them. I'm interested to see what the gender distribution is of bogleheads.

I hope I did the poll creation correctly...

So maybe the last choice should be "confused." :)

I'll interpret other as meaning
present
or
abstain.

Variations. I am not informed about that, so I didn't want to exclude people. Other is a catchall term.

Maybe I am not a Boglehead after all. I did not over-analyze the simple question, lol

With all the critiques of this poll, I would like to contribute my 2 cents which is it's pretty straight forward. You have 3 options; pick the one that you identify with most. Bogleheads value SIMPLICITY, let's keep this poll simple.

Still trying to figure out why this thread is even marginally within the Forum's guidelines.

Very few votes . but the results don't surprise me one bit, 70/30 Male/Female, I would have guessed closer to 80/20.

dm200 wrote:I know this is a losing battle (probably long lost!), but I maintain that "gender" is a grammatical term ( as in the Latin noun "Agricola" is feminine gender, etc.). The question of a person would be, in my opinion, "What sex are you?" Or perhaps, "What is your sexual orientation?"

I can't understand why people identify themselves as a "male" or a "female" rather than a "man" or a "woman." Is it related to the distinction you pointed out?

This thread is now in the Local Chapters and Bogleheads Community forum (Bogleheads).

A related thread: How old are you?

Let's stick with the intent of answering the OP's question.

Oh my god. I cannot believe how long this thread is. It is this simple, folks. If you are a man, select male. If you are a woman, select female. If your answer is, for one reason or another, "It's complicated.....", select other. Is this a legitimate problem or are people just trying to make the poll controversial?

OK, we need some vocabulary here. I have to give this lecture to students in introductory courses because they usually come in thinking that "gender" is what you call "sex" when you're in school. Wrong.

sex - biological, the reproductive assignment, male or female, usually obvious although there are chromosomal variants and cases where sex is not so clear, e.g., a child born with non-normal genitalia.

gender - cultural, masculine or feminine, varies from culture to culture and within cultures from class to class, not to mention over time; gender is the culturally determined construct of non-reproductive behaviors associated with each sex.

So, whether a Boglehead is male or female is a question of sex, not gender. Pretty meaningless unless you are looking for a reproductive partner.

The gender of a Boglehead varies with the activity and the perceptions of the observer. Every once in a while there's a post indicating that knowledge and discussion of finance is a gendered behavior. Some of the avatars show gendered perceptions.

Offhand, we're probably 99.44% Other.

I think we're ready to lock down this thread. The tangents that the thread has taken are getting really ridiculous.

I removed quite a number of off-topic comments. The intent is to understand the composition of the Bogleheads community, similar to How old are you?.

The intent of the choices should be clear, regardless of the wording. If not, then choose the one which you believe applies.

It's interesting to me to see an approximately 75/25 M/F split. Would any more forum members like to vote? Only 295 have thus far.

Exactly, thanks Vic. As a sociologist, it is Aggrevating that people use the two interchangeably, especially those who should know better (media outlets).

If I recall my modern criticism correctly, gender is socially constructed, while sex is bodily and biological. Either can be ambiguous, and they can be contradictory. Which are you asking about?

Mine personally is not ambiguous or contradictory in either sense, which is a badge of neither shame nor honor.
