Packed it in on 2 May 2014. Feels good. Hoping to get yard into shape and get reacquainted with some old friends and hobbies. Unfortunately I broke my ankle on Friday night which currently has me slowed down a bit. Good news is not a bad break and hopefully can start to weight bear in in a week or two. Very good news is that I don't have to make any arrangements to get coverage for work!

We should probably make this an ongoing annual thread, I'm thinking, a new one each January.
Perhaps maintaining the list in Google docs would be easier, similar to the net worth thread...

Great idea, thanks! I don't have any experience with setting up Google docs, and I hope someone would take it on.

I think there is also value in having the dates listed in a thread, so that people will receive timely congratulations. I edited previous messages with the list to keep the latest one as the master list.

After reading this thread, I have a some way to go btw, I have to wonder how many people have been putting off retirement while waiting for this recent run up in the market?

In other words are we going to start seeing a glut of new retires compared to 2009, 2010, 2011 etc.? If so I hope this helps get some of the kids out of the retirees basements.

Good question by Jay, in my case I had made plans to retire at 62 (my current age), had a meeting with a retirement counselor a couple of months ago to go over all our finances and was told that I should have retired a couple of years ago, so, all is good on the Western Front. My first week in retirement, this morning instead of hitting the road to work, I hit the road to the Naval Base track, and had an awesome workout.

Thank you.

I got notified early April and pretty free to use my time the way I wanted, but was officially still on payroll until May the 2nd. So I guess we should say May 3rd as the official retirement date... Thank you, lady Victoria, for recording those tidbits of history...

The average age of those who report retiring before the recession was 57, compared to 62 for those who retired afterwards. (Assoc Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research). So possibly some of those retiring now have delayed to add to their savings and wait for a rise in the markets. Personally I had no interest in retiring until the last two years and have been part time since June of 2012. It certainly doesn't hurt to have more time to accumulate and to get the returns we have had recently. :D

SGM, concur. All I read during 2005-2006 was about the upcoming retirement tsunami. And then came the Great Recession, with retirement investments suffering huge losses and all retirement engines stop. And now the new normal (is there such a thing as a new normal?).

Thank you.

Partially retired 1/14, will be fully retired 12/31/14.
Ages 64 & 65. We plan to take spousal SS when both are 66 then both take own SS at 70.

Our allocation is split between Target Retirement Income and Lifestrategy Income in all tax deferred and tax free accounts. Taxable has 2 years living expenses in TF mm, 3 years in TF intermediate bond fund, and a few long held “aristocrat” stocks. Our accounts were consolidated to Vanguard from TIAA and USAA several years ago so it was easy to move the funds around.

We feel very fortunate to have accumulated more than enough to fund our desired annual expenses above SS & pension for many more years than will be necessary. This forum has been a tremendous help in understanding the necessity to transition the portfolio to a much less risky profile for the decumulation phase, LMP and “won the game” concepts, and SS strategies. Also, thanks to what I learned here, I have transferred the ded contributions and earnings from a mixed TIRA to a 403b enabling moving the non-ded contributions to a Roth. Could only do this for one of us but that was better than nothing. Will transfer the 403b to the Tira next year then do some Roth conversions over the next few years.

I shudder to think what could happen if I did not stumble on this forum a few months ago and just went along my merry way into retirement with a way too heavy stock portfolio. Thank you all!

Dec 31, 2014 - age 56 - after 30 years (27 I loved prior to being acquired) with a nice voluntary severance package and a paid off mortgage thanks to Bogleheads. I love you all for the sound advice and guidance over the years. Time to pursue the next challenges.

PS : my only plan is to be seating behind home plate for NY Yankee spring training with a beer in my hand smiling and looking forward to the next generation of Yankee heroes.

Exactly what are you planning? IIRC You cannot collect a spousal benefit until your spouse files for their own benefit.
so you can collect one spousal benefit

Note: Only one member of a couple can apply for retirement benefits and have payments suspended so his or her current spouse can collect benefits.

Possibly that is what you meant and I misread your post

Yes, that's pretty much the plan. From the T Rowe Price Social Security Calculator:
GOAL
We want to get the maximum benefit possible as a couple – over both our lifetimes.
STRATEGY
June 2016: Your spouse files and suspends so that you may apply for spousal benefits.
June 2016: You file, restrict application to spousal benefits.
October 2019: You file for own benefits, at age 70.
June 2020: Your spouse files for own benefits, at age 70.

I retired as of Jan 1,2014. I love it. My newest hobby is teaching line dancing at our senior center. I would like to start some other activities also. Love having the time to watch my grandchildren in their activities. I have a larger garden. I want to redo our 3 season porch. Love it, love it.

Best wishes,

Lilly

I have really enjoyed reading these posts. The thought that came to mind was how did you finally say "I have enough to go right now and I'm going". Did you use the Trinity Study (4% for 30 years/3% for 40 years), Wade Pfau's much lower withdrawl rate, Firecalc, Otar calculator, pension so significant that investment income is almost unneccesary, waiting to be closer to SS age, buying annuity, etc

I sure would like to know the ages of the folks on Victoria's list. I just turned 62 and plan on working until 70. Financially, I can retire now without drawing SS but I'm afraid I would be so bored and have to go back to work. My job is engaging and fairly stable.

I put my papers in last week, I'll be on the job until the first week in July - Independence Day! I'm 62, I paid my mortgage off 10 years ago and I've done all of the things that someone who wants to retire is supposed to do: Roth contribution every year, deferred comp at work, frugal living, a Vanguard account for 25 years. Now I want to reap my reward for doing these things. We won't be clinking champagne glasses with the international jet set but I think that we'll do OK. I haven't had a summer vacation since I was a kid and then we're off to Asia in September for an open ended trip, we'll be off the work leash so when we feel that we're done we'll come home.

71--I've had a great last 10 years working for a B1G university after retiring from a 30 year career in the Federal government. It's time to get on with the rest of my life, which will begin July 4.

For the first time since 1975 I do not have a single contract or agreement in hand to do work for money. So I guess I am "retired". I do have 4 research papers coming out this year.
DW actually got her first FERS pension check on Jan 2.
So put me down

My last day of work was Jan 10, 2014. Still hard to believe it's for real. It just doesn't seem like I could possibly be old enough (57), or well off enough, to NEVER HAVE TO WORK AGAIN.

I only purchased term life insurance so when I die, the only thing my wife has left is the $1M.

I assume there's no way to prepare or protect yourself from this except for whole life (which I don't want to buy).
Nice question, but quite Off Topic for this thread.

Good question, and it is now under a new thread.

So, let's continue with the roll call for the retirement class of 2014.

Thank you.

This was my plan too, although it got overtaken by circumstances... I wonder if there is indeed a significant peak of retirements at this precise date! :D

Retired Jan. 1 at 62 after 36 years at the same place.. always put the max into 401k, and was lucky enough to have it happen during the 80's and 90's.
Miss the people, don't miss the stress.
Not doing anything more than the gym, working around the house, bowling with my 89 year old father, lunch out with wife, trips, etc.. even when I get bored, better than working!

Nbseer,

I added you to the list as an edit. In the age of Google, finding your employer was not that difficult. You must have had an interesting career {with a trace of white envy},

I'm listed as May 7 but I'm still on the payroll. Right now I'm just practicing being retired. Official retirement date will be July 7. Age will not change between now and then.

Interestingly, the time of day when I am feeling "retired" is not the mornings when I don't need to get up at any particular time but in the evenings when I don't need to get to bed at "a reasonable time."
