Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
RGO - aka sans souliers
Final workday: 28 March, 2014
Age: 60
Why retire? Because I can. My basic needs are met, so why hang on when the next generation is desperately trying to get a toehold to start their own climb?
What to do? Self discovery. Self-renewal. Finding new ways to contribute.
Latest discoveries - learned 3 simple, simple basic recipes -- Choux pastry, real custard, ganache -- I will never ever lack eclairs.
The BEST pea soup starts with a smoked shoulder bone and mirepoix.
Advisors:
My cardiologist says I have more time to devote to walking. He knows nothing about the eclair situation. I plan to keep the peace with moderation.
Former boss says I should get custom golf clubs. (looks like walking the course will be the health regimen)

Sometimes pessimism leaves me pretty well prepared for when things don't go my way, and pleasantly surprised when they do.

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
My last day of work was April 10, 2014. Age 53. My goal since age 18 has been to retire. I wasn't very focused on it considering it took me 35 years to do it. Although physically I am very active I love it sit around and think. I have always wanted time to think and now I have it! I also love to learn. My health is perfect and my wife's health is perfect. The world is our oyster.
Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
Last day of work was Wednesday, 7 May, but retirement won't be official until I hand in my badge and laptop on 7 July.
Age 65.
Planned to retire May 2015, but the offer of a voluntary separation package with 38 weeks of pay and a few other perks (plus encouragement from this forum) prompted me to speed it up.
Don't have any specific grand plans for retirement, but I have pages of notes of things that I could do, including travel and education. I have been volunteering for 2 decades at one organization and was planning to expand my time and involvement with them, but in the past two years the environment there has changed so now I am looking into other volunteer opportunities. Will play it by ear for a time (a few weeks or months) and see how unstructured time feels before I start filling up my calendar with commitments.
Top priority is to take care of my health. Already upped my daily stationary bike time from 2 miles to 5 miles. More walking; less eating.

26 July 2014, Saturday - planned retirement date.
There are two circumstances that may delay my date by a few weeks, none of them is financial. If that happens, I will honor my pledge. In any case, I will retire in 2014, and thus I belong to this thread.

July 4th I begin "semi retirement". Off from then until the beginning of December, then work 3 months, carribean for March, come back and work 3 more months, then rinse and repeat till I say enough. Does that qualify me for the class of 2014 ?
I would like to get my financial stuff up on the board for you all to shoot holes in.

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
i am cutting back to half time on july 1. I turn 60 this year. My wife and I are considering becoming snowbirds, so if we find a suitable house in fla then I will completely retire by winter time. If we don't find a place I will reconsider continuing to work at half time for a while, depending on how I feel working part time.

Good conversation!
My official last day at work is 5/15/14, and I can see retirement from my window. On 5/15/14 I turn the laptop and my common access card to my company. What are my plans? This year I will run a 26.2 miler in Utah, followed by a trip to Amazonias, and life is real good. Currently fine tuning my SWAN (sleep well at night) portfolio as capital preservation is paramount, should be done with my balancing act this month. Oh my, this feels so good.
Oh yes, it is good to be an Alumnus, BIU (Bogleheads International University), Retirement Class of 2014.
Do Great Things! And thanks for reading this note.

My official last day is May 26th.
It was May 23rd.
I will continue to receive medical insurance coverage from my company including vision until 65, but no dental.
I don't have any major plan yet.
But, will take a short trip to Las Vegas or San Diego to take me out of work rhythm.
I was inspired by the push-ups and pull-ups thread.
http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtop ... 25752&f=11
I'm up to 5 sets of 8 pull-ups and 4 to 5 sets 20 to 30 push-ups.

Last day of work 4/9/14 after 43 years on the same job--always high stress. I cannot believe that I lived through it! My husband and I are moving to our brand new home in an active 55 community in two weeks. We are thrilled. Our neighborhood is filled with interesting extroverts from all over everywhere. It's almost like starting high school again without looking for a boyfriend. And we did not have to move but twenty minutes away. We have already visited the grandkids for a week. I have 2 retirement parties planned so far. And we are looking forward to attending the Bogleheads Convention in Philadelphia in October. Life is sweet!

I think it puts me in both classes
I get 6 months to try out this retirement stuff this year and if it sticks, I ditch work forever. That just might happen

Well, I was forced to retire due to a medical issue from a job I loved that gave me excitement and satisfaction. I worked in a close knit group where great friendships are forged. My medical issue is well under control but I miss going to work THERE. I have a second career that i really like but its not the same. I make a very decent living but its not all about the money. There is just too much spare time. I have time intensive hobbies and a great family but doing what you love to do is unbeatable. I miss the guys. I miss the adrenaline. I miss who i was. Retirement is a learned behavior. I guess I'm a slow learner.VictoriaF wrote:Why?tony44 wrote:I'm retired for 4 years now. I'm 55. It sucks

I seem to have went the opposite direction. Retired 10/31/2012, started current job 8/26/2013. I just wasn't mentally prepared for it. Good Luck to all the newly minted retirees!

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
Same thing happened to me at age 56. Suddenly my world was altered. Since I can't change the circumstances, I made changes to myself. I now have a precious commodity; time. This might seem strange from someone with a terminal condition. What changed was an attitude of gratitude for every day and all of the potential it brings. I have never missed things from the past because I stay busy looking toward the future. Retirement (aka full-disability) allows me to appreciate what there is, so I don't dwell on what was lost. The choice was an easy one. Who wants to be unhappy?tony44 wrote:Well, I was forced to retire due to a medical issue from a job I loved that gave me excitement and satisfaction.

But I am thinking about getting into making homemade beer and for the wife and I to learn how to play golf.
Does riding a motorcycle count?

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
Well, I just found out I'm retiring July 1. After a series of acquisitions, our parent company is now merging some of us. As the president of one of these companies, I'm no longer needed. They told me yesterday; starting June 1 they want me to transition out, and July 1 is the end. They're offering me a position on their advisory board (36K/yr, full benefits, 3 yr term) and the continued use of my office.
There's no ill will. I've known this was coming, but thought it would be around the end of 2015. All of my top people will be upper management in the new combined company, which makes me happy as they're people I personally hired & mentored over the last 5-10-20 years.
I have saved and invested my entire adult life (I'm 58, started working when I was 20, opened first Vanguard account in early 80's), so money is not an issue. I'm worried I'll be bored. I work every day, don't have a lot of outside hobbies or interests. And I really don't think I want to go to work again. Once you've been king, it's hard to be... well, anything else. I do some charity work, but that's only 2-3 days a month. Our kids are grown, no grandkids yet.
I know I'm a very lucky guy, and I'm not complaining in the least. But I need to give some thought to Life Part 2.

August 1st 2014.
I have been giving it a lot of thought and went part time almost 2 years ago. I have picked up new hobbies for which I have shown no previous talent and just do for fun. This will be an adventure. One is only limited by one's imagination.
Someone said you are only young once, but you can be immature forever. I think I will become a kid again.

For those of you so inclined and looking for something to do in retirement, you might consider volunteering in the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program for the months of February through mid-April each year. The program provides free tax preparation services to all ages, but is targeted to seniors aged 60+. If you volunteer you will go through a week's training in early January each year and you will have to take and successfully pass an IRS test each year to qualify. There are some 36,000 volunteers nationwide participating in the 45 year-old program currently preparing about 2 million returns a year. If you have any interest just search AARP Foundation Tax-Aide. I've been in the program for about ten years now and thoroughly enjoy helping people of all ages get all the entitlements of our federal and state tax systems.

Me? Tons of work to do in the yard. In the house. Collect the honey from the bees and tend to them. Keep the chickens from getting eaten. Simplify my life and get rid of things I don't need. Visit my folks more often. Attend all the grandkids events...they grow up too fast. Get to my cottage on the lake more often. Swim

Yes you are correct, some of us are lucky, for Life Part II, one of the items inside my [to-do] briefcase is to do some volunteer work teaching (as part of the Troops to Teachers Program), but the marathon training is going to keep my mind occupied for the first few months.
Thanks

I made beer back in the early 90's for a short period of time. I have started running 3 miles a day. I'll have to up the mileage to maintain my waistline.

Kaufmanrider,
No need to be a member of AARP to volunteer in the program nor to have your taxes prepared in the program. And it is sponsored by AARP Foundation and not AARP. There is a difference IMO!

FWIW my Father In-Law retired a couple years ago from a similar position with similar concerns. However, I've never seen a busier retired person between the philanthropy events, grandkid activities, trips, and various boards he sits on. Looks like he won't be getting to reading all those books he's been talking about all these years.astrohip wrote:Well, I just found out I'm retiring July 1. Add me to your list of dignitaries, I retired two weeks ago on April 30.....and that is only the first big step. I've lived in northern Illinois for all of my 62 years, but next week I close the deal on the sale of our home. We've already purchased a nice "patio home" in a small gated 55+ community in Mesa, AZ. We'll sell every stick of furniture in this house over the next few months, fill up a small POD, and drive down to AZ to unload it.
Yes, we are familiar with the new Arizona neighborhood, we have visited it many times.
Hospice. In anticipation of moving and having things to do, I volunteered in Illinois two years ago. I think we all know this type of volunteer service has a strong need in Arizona.
I'm a active member of the original 12 step program, and will now increase my activities in Mesa, likely becoming a pest at some new groups down there.
And that is enough planning, I will play the rest by ear.
It's been ten working days (maybe I should rephrase that). It's been 14 days since they picked my AmEx card, computer, Ipad and smart phone (I bought the company car).....and I am beginning to get the feeling that I made the right call.
Goodbye potholes and parkas in May....hello sandstorms and sunshine all year long!!

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
Before DW was disabled and I got derailed I was hoping to open a one stop elder law/ finance/ advice center. my hope was to get retired DRs Lawyers Cps and business types to stop exploitation of the elderly. I may yet get to do it. Think of it as advocacy , not charityastrohip wrote:Well, I just found out I'm retiring July 1.

I was making beer about that same time frame too. I probably did it for a couple of years then put it away and havent picked it up since then. But I plan on getting back to it at some point. Its intersting chemistry for sure. And the beer tastes good. Me, I have joined a local gym and becoming more and more active and loving every bit of it. I think I still have the old Grolesch (sp?) bottles I used to bottle with.Kaufmanrider wrote:I made beer back in the early 90's for a short period of time. I have started running 3 miles a day. I'll have to up the mileage to maintain my waistline.
Yes, make beer.... its fun and tastes good too! But not too much..... can be addicting and increases the wasteline. Big thumbs up on riding the bike.
Swim

This could probably be a separate thread, but since we're talking retirement here...
SS question: I have put the max amount into SS/FICA for 20+ years. I hit the cap every year. Now I'm going to have a reduced salary for several years. I'm 58, and don't plan on taking SS until 70.
Will my reduced salary affect my SS benefits 12 years down the line?

Astroship, check the SSA Web site, they have a couple of easy to use calculator, and you can easily test multiple scenarios.astrohip wrote:This could probably be a separate thread, but since we're talking retirement here...

Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
Five more weeks and I couldn't be busier. The announcement for my replacement hasn't been published yet. We have an offer on our Chicago condo, which we are still negotiating. Even if we accept the initial offer, and we subtract sales costs and the remaining mortgage, we will come out ahead. Once we come back from our two weeks in Aruba in July we will put out Madison condo up for sale. My wife figured that she wore her winter clothes seven months this year. We really, really, really want this past winter to be our last one in the Midwest. My wife will miss the Chicago place even though there were some weekends last winter we couldn't go outside because it was so cold.
Re: Roll Call for the Retirement Class of 2014!
Well I had a 20 steps (at least) plan aiming at retiring mid-2015, and then I got caught in a 'workforce' reduction and found myself free as a bird early April 2014, with a decent severance package.
So today, instead of swapping 10,000 emails to try to make stuff progress in an excruciating way at work, i am outdoors happily fishing. Just got a nice one, actually.
Aside from fishing, i exercise a lot, I volunteered as treasurer for a non-profit, and created a small fishing guide business. Aiming mostly at helping kids get a big one. This will pay a few bills, but i don't view as work, this is 99% for pleasure! I discovered in the process that creating a small DBA business is incredibly easy in the US.
So yeah, count me in class 2014... I'm 52, by the way.
Ps. Oh, and i shaved my head, ala 'breaking bad'. My wife hates it, my boys love it. She'll win, eventually, she always does...
