Master Thread for Austin Texas area Bogleheads

I'll give this new concept a try. The next meeting of the Austin area Bogleheads will be Saturday, May 17th from noon to 2:00 PM at the Wildflower Terrace Art Room, 3801 Berkman Drive in Austin. Please note that we will meet in a different room this time. It is around the corner and down the hall from our regular meeting room. I'll post signs. I'll let y'all know if we have any special guests in attendance. In the meantime, please submit relevant topic ideas to me by email, PM or posting here, and I'll send out an agenda before the meeting. Hope to see y'all there.

The Austin area Bogleheads will meet again on Saturday, August 9th at the Wildflower Terrace Room, 3801 Berkman Drive in Austin, from noon to 1 PM. Our special guest for this meeting will be Carl Stuart, a Registered Investment Advisor and host of the local radio show "Money Talk" on KLBJ AM 590. Carl's show airs on Saturdays from 4 to 5 PM. If you are new to the group and would like to get on the distribution list for emails about future meetings, please send me a private message (PM). Feel free to submit relevant topic ideas for discussion, and I will include them in a tentative agenda to be sent out shortly before the meeting. Thanks and hope to see y'all there.

Many thanks to Carl Stuart for attending our meeting and allowing us to pick his brain about financial and investment planning. Thanks also to the more than twenty bogleheads who attended the meeting. I look forward to our next meeting sometime in November.

I am interested in the same. I did some digging in the local chapter forum and it seems Houston has never had any regular meet ups. A few over the past 2 years but nothing ongoing. Looks like Austin is doing well, too bad I just moved from Austin to The Woodlands... I am guessing Houston is too large or spread out to have meetings that everyone would be able to make. I know I probably would not drive an hour from The Woodlands to downtown Houston for one.

You are correct, the last meet up was back in January. As to why Houston BH's do not meet up regularly? I suppose Houston's size plays a big role, but then you also need to factor in people's schedules, road construction, flakey BHers, and an inconsistent meeting location.

it would be nice if there were more regularly scheduled meet ups, but until somene makes this their pet project i do not think Houston will ever get organized.

The next local meeting in Austin will be sometime after the national conference near Philly coming up next week.
A few of us from the Austin area are going and we will report on anything interesting that we learn.

Just got back from the conference and am interested in any other Htown folks that are looking in starting Houston group.

Houston is (and will continue to be) quite geographically dispersed and maybe we can find somewhere distance neutral to those interested?

There were three Houstonions at the conference, I knew one already, but never came across the third.

Met some nice folks from Abilene, Dallas and San Antonio (Rick Ferri included) up in Philly.

"We are planning a meeting for Saturday, December 12th at 12 noon. It's not 100% positive right now, but we have reserved a room at the Austin North Village Branch Library at 2505 Steck Ave. in Austin. We are still waiting to hear back from the library, but no one else has the room reserved then, so hopefully it will all work okay. Just wanted to give everyone a 10 day advanced notice. Will post again when everything has been confirmed."

I'm brand new here on the forum. Have been investing with Vanguard for several years, though just learned of "Bogleheads" and this forum via the recent Kiplinger's article (Jan. 2016 issue, article title: "The World According to Bogleheads").

I live in Austin, don't know whether I can make it this Saturday, but just wanted to say "hello" here. I hope to get to check back here regularly.

I'm really hoping that I'll be able to attend!

It will be tough given that my wife and I will be looking at home rentals in the Georgetown/ Round Rock area during late February and will likely be unpacking our household goods on the 5th.

As I recall, there were 12 or so in attendance. The discussion was a free form but centered around
portfolio strategies and questions about tax reduction and IRA conversions. Some members are going to the
national meeting later this month and there was some discussion about that. Bob and the others might
remember more details. We also have a facebook group "Bogleheads - Austin" that may be of interest to you.
