NE Ohio (Cleveland Area) Master Thread

Post by Maid of the Mist »

The NE Ohio Chapter met this past weekend and had a lively and interesting discussion on annuities and long term care insurance.

Our next meeting will be April 19 (Saturday) at 10am and will be held at the Independence Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. This is a change from our usual meeting place. The Independence Branch is located at 6361 Selig Drive • Independence, Ohio 44131 (about 5 miles north of Brecksville - just off of I77). You can find it on Google maps. If you have any questions, send me a message.

Topics for the next meeting include:

1. 3 Fund Portfolio vs Alternates.
2. Rebalancing strategies
3. Tax Strategies for minimizing taxes on portfolios (This topic may be pushed out to the next meeting if we run short of time)

All are welcome.

Hello,
I live in NE Ohio - specifically Canton. I am still working. Is this group mostly retirees?

Jane,

Nope, not all retired folks, some retired, some still working, some younger people just starting out too. A pretty good variety of people, actually.

We'd be glad to have you join is. We meet every other month. The next meeting is on Saturday, June 21 at 10 am at the Brecksville library. Watch the forum a few days prior for any updates.

Sorry I missed the recent meeting. I'm the chief taxi driver for my wife these days, as she recovers from knee replacement surgery, and we had a scheduling conflict.

So, it's back to Brecksville next time?

It is time for another NE Ohio Bogleheads meeting. All are welcome. The meeting will be on June 21 (Saturday) at the Brecksville Library in Brecksville, OH. Note that this library locale is different from April's meeting locale. Meeting time is 10am and we will be in the large meeting room.

We had a large turnout at our April meeting and a great discussion.

The June 21 meeting topics are:

1. Tax issues relating to investments. We will discuss the opportunities within our tax code to lower taxes we pay to the federal government, state government and local. I will have to admit local income tax breaks are few.

2. Compare and contrast the various retirement savings vehicles available -

Roth IRA
Traditional Before Tax IRA
After Tax IRA
Roth 401K
Traditional Pre-tax 401K
After Tax 401K
etc.

Hope to see everyone on Saturday.

I believe the next meeting will be August 9. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be out of town then. BTW, we had a big crowd this last time. How many was it? 15? 16?

Hello NE Ohio Bogleheads,

I was wondering, what time and where will the next meeting be on August 9. I attended the last one which I found very beneficial. I believe we should be receiving an email about time and place.

Thanks.

Just a reminder that our next meeting of the NE OHio Bogleheads is Oct 18 at 10 am.

Location:
North Royalton Branch of Cuyahoga County Public Library
5071 Wallings Rd
North Royalton, OH 44133

Topics will be:
- Retirement withdrawals
- Retirement bridge period (between actually quitting work and collecting SS - can you get yourself into a nice low tax bracket and do some novel things in this period)
- And if there is extra time we can look at Firecalc (or save that for the Dec meeting).

It looks to be a good meeting - so be sure to join us. The last meeting was well attended with 19 people. We are planning on showing a few Vanguard clips (5 minute clips) on these topics to start the discussion

This is an update for the December Bogleheads meeting. The date has changed to Dec 6 (a week earlier than originally planned). It is still a Saturday at 10am at the North Royalton Library. However, be sure to change your calendars to Dec 6. I hope this is not a big inconvenience for folks.

Remember that the topics for this meeting are:

1. Long Term Care Insurance (There is an article on Bloomberg.com that discusses who needs long term care insurance - you may want to give this a quick read before coming to the meeting. In any case, I suspect this topic will have a lot of different views and perspectives and I look forward to that. It is a very divisive topic (and a very personal topic also - one size does not seem to fit all) and I personally gain a lot of knowledge by hearing lots of different ideas. So come with your ideas and an open mind.

2. Firecalc - a discussion of software used to help determine retirement needs and timing.

I look forward to seeing our group

It is Valentines Day on Saturday and what better way to spend it than to bring your special mate to a Bogleheads meeting on Saturday morning. The NE Ohio group is meeting at 10am at the North Royalton Library. We will discuss: 1. Roth vs Traditional IRAs and 2. the best credit card deals. Our meeting commences at 10am and runs 'til noon and we have some very smart and very helpful members.

Finally, it is Cleveland and the weather can get a little treacherous this time of year. If we cancel due to weather, I will post it on this forum the night before.

Hope to see you there.

This is a reminder for all the NE Ohio Bogleheads (or anyone visiting the area) - our next meeting is April 11 (Saturday) at 10am. Location is North Royalton Public Library. See prior post for specific address.

This meeting will be an open forum on retirement. We will go around the room and solicit questions, comments and wise tales of retirement. The discussion can be about retirement preparation, retirement planning, or retirement living.

Hope to see you all there.

25 people were at our meeting this morning! Some people had driven a good ways to get there. Seems the word is getting out.

Stimulating, far-ranging discussion. I was a little concerned that one of the professors lectured a lot, but perhaps he wasn't too obnoxious.

I likely can't attend in June, because I'll probably be out of town.

Thanks to Maid of the Mist for organizing!

How long do the meetings last ? I have a birthday party to attend at one. I'm 34 and invest 12% of my income between a Roth IRA and 401k. My wife and I have opposite schedules so Saturday nights I spend reading/researching about investing but I'd like to discuss investing with someone besides my advisor. Thanks and hopefully I can make it.
