Taylor's 90th Birthday
Re: TAYLOR'S UPCOMING 90th BIRTHDAY
Happy 90th birthday, Taylor. Amid any great debate on this forum, when my mind is sometimes reeling from the complexity of the input from others,I eventually page down to find if you have a posting. I treasure your ability to bring things back to a key component of John Bogle's philosophy...simplicity. Even more important, however, is the humility and gentleness with which you treat all. Thank you for all that you have done for us.
All the best,

Re: TAYLOR'S UPCOMING 90th BIRTHDAY
Hi Everyone:
I'm in Miami, celebrating this special birthday all weekend with Taylor. Just got back from crewing with him in the Biscayne Bay Sailing Regatta, and we won both races and the Regatta, all due to Taylor's sailing skills and strategies. In the first race, we were dead last for a while, and it didn't look promising, but, because of Taylor's sailing skills, we somehow managed to catch and pass all the other boats. He's amazing! I wanna be like him when I grow up!
Tomorrow we'll be meeting with 20-25 members of the South Florida Bogleheads Local Chapter for another birthday celebration. Looking forward to getting together with both new and old Boglehead friends.

Taylor,
I haven't been visiting the forum as often as in the past, but I checked in today, Saturday, and lo
and behold, there was Mel's post about your 90th birthday!! Today!
As Mel and so many of us feel…….you are truly one of my very few heroes in life. I have always
wanted to know how to better manage, save and invest in a way that gives peace of mind. Your guidance
on this forum for so many years, reassuring us, again and again, about the beauty of simplicity and staying the course, has
been monumental! I learned so much from the Bogleheads. And especially from you.
In addition, your kindness, and classiness has also been an important model for me.
So sincere thanks.
And I hope you have many many more happy and healthy birthdays!!

On this day, my 90th birthday, I got everything I want. It's not "things." It is the Birthday messages I am privileged to receive from investors like you who honor me with your generous remarks. I shall treasure your messages the rest of my life.
Mel came to Miami yesterday to participate in our S.E. Florida Bogleheads Chapter meeting in my home tomorrow. This morning, Mel, I and another friend entered the Biscayne Bay sailing regatta. 13 years ago we easily won this regatta. We did it again today -- 12 inches in front of the second place boat (age takes its toll).
What a day! What kind messages! I am a very lucky man!
Thank you and best wishes.

A very Happy Birthday to Taylor.
I don't post much but do read all of your posts. They have been so helpful to me, beginning retirement.
And also, you have inspired me to seek out a "learn to sail club" in the Ft. Myers/Naples area.
I spent years on Lake Michigan in power boats with my Dad. He was a Navy Seabee and captained those kind of boats.
However, I think that Florida sailing might be a good choice for me, an opportunity to get away from the plethora of power boats and their noise-to sail off to a more quiet place on the Gulf.
Again a HB and remember, 90 is the new 70!

Happy Birthday Taylor...I just missed it, but my intention is sincere. If you could only see how you have helped our family out over the years - due to your sage advice, we made it through the great recession, and are now happily afloat. But, more importantly, I appreciate your spirit of service and compassion. You are a great example for us all.

Re: TAYLOR'S UPCOMING 90th BIRTHDAY
I think we had a good birthday meeting in "the house that Jack built".
We had a couple of surprise phone calls (Laura and Mr. Bogle), AND a surprise guest (Rick Ferri). Us regular Bogleheads were honored to have the wisdom of Taylor, Mel, and Rick on hand to answer our questions. And we got to listen to Mr. Bogle read a poem he wrote about Taylor. But most importantly, it was a nice celebration of a great man.
Thanks again, Taylor, for hosting, and may you have many more happy birthdays to come!

Re: TAYLOR'S UPCOMING 90th BIRTHDAY
Hello Everyone:
Just got back from a wonderful four-day celebration of Taylor's 90th. Here are some of the highlights:
When I first arrived on Friday afternoon, Taylor and I spend some time alone, reminiscing about how far things have come since we first started the Bogleheads back in 1998. I was invited to a family dinner celebration on Friday evening at one of Taylor's son's home. We had a lovely dinner and lots of good conversation, mostly centered, of course, on the Bogleheads.
On Saturday morning, I joined Taylor and four or five of his good friends for breakfast, and then it was off to the weekly Biscayne Bay Sailing Regatta where Taylor had asked me to sail as one of his crew members in the race. In 2000, after our first ever get-together with Jack Bogle (Diehards I), I had served as part of Taylor's crew in the Regatta, and we won two of the three races and just missed winning the third one. As a result, we ended up winning the Regatta. That was a perfect ending to an unbelievable weekend in Miami with Jack Bogle and about 20 other Bogleheads.
Fast forward 13 years later, and the combination of Taylor's sailing skills and my good luck charm, we won both legs of the race this year and again finished in first place. After the race, there was another birthday celebration with loads of food and all of Taylor's sailing buddies at the marina. What a nice bunch they are.
Later that night, there was another birthday dinner and celebration at the Yacht Club. I begged off, since I was tired and couldn't even think about eating again so soon.
On Sunday, we continued the birthday celebration when we met with 20 or so members of the South Florida Bogleheads Local Chapter in Taylor's condominium (the house that Jack built). We must have had enough food for 50 or more, so no one went hungry. I had a few surprises in store for Taylor. Queen Laura called from Mexico City, Gail Cox called from a 777 that was just about to take off from Dallas for LA, I had invited Rick Ferri to join us and surprise Taylor, and finally, I arranged for Jack Bogle to call. As was previously mentioned, Jack sang happy birthday to Taylor and recited a poem he had written especially for Taylor's birthday. Later Sunday night, Taylor and I had dinner with a friend of his, but none of us was really hungry after having eaten so much earlier in the day, so we ordered light.
Finally, today, we had breakfast at the beach by a historic lighthouse and then it was time for me to head home.
What a great four days I had with Taylor, celebrating this momentous occasion with a true friend and member of the Greatest Generation! They don't make 'em like that any more!
Hope to join you in celebrating your 100th, Taylor. We'll go sailing and whip all those youngsters again!

Re: TAYLOR'S 90th BIRTHDAY
Happy Birthday to Taylor, from Jack Bogle
At 2 P.M. on Sunday afternoon, thanks to Mel, I had the privilege of greeting Taylor by telephone. After doing my best to sing a lusty version of "Happy birthday to you," followed by a commemorative poem that I had written earlier. He loved it, and perhaps you'll enjoy it too:
On this freezing day, sitting by my fire
I salute a fine man that I greatly admire.
I tell you that we need him more and more,
He is of course our friend Taylor Larimore.
He’s lived a great life in the service of all
Helping fellow investors through perils and falls
And serving our nation in peace and in war,
That’s just part of the saga of Taylor Larimore.
His crowning achievement, in my biased view,
Is founding the Bogleheads; he’s helped far more than a few.
He’s dispensed wisdom and common sense, wise to the core.
That’s why each one of us loves Taylor Larimore.
With his lovely wife Pat, invited by this humble man,
14 years ago our gatherings began.
Today, our group consists of 25,000 more,
As word spreads of the wisdom of Taylor Larimore.
So to this great man, thanks more and more,
As we wish him birthdays, more and more.
And that’s all I can say about Taylor Larimore.

What a joyous, inspirational 90th birthday celebration! Reading about it brought unforgettable memories of meeting Taylor and Pat at my first Boglehead Conference in Chicago in 2002. Taylor, you had been my wise counselor on the Morningstar Diehard Board for several years prior to the conference, and I want you to know I still read every post you make! You have been a help and a blessing to many, and you have my deepest gratitude.

The past few days celebrating my 90th birthday are among the most wonderful and happiest days of my life. As you probably realize, I enjoy helping people. Participating in this Boglehead Forum gives me that opportunity.
I never expected a reward, but your posts wishing me a happy birthday, and your posts expressing your appreciation for something I wrote long ago that helped you become a better investor, are the greatest birthday gifts I ever received.
I know a lot about investing—but it is mostly about what not to do. I spent much of my life making mistake after mistake trying to "beat the market." Then I heard about a man who changed my life as he will yours. His name is Jack Bogle for whom this forum is named.
I distinctly remember the first time I saw Mr. Bogle. It was 1997 when Pat and I learned that he was going to be the Keynote Speaker at a Money Show in Orlando. We both wanted to hear his speech but mostly we wanted to see this remarkable man in person. So we packed our luggage and went to the convention hotel.
The next morning we were walking towards the huge auditorium when I saw a tall man in a sweater standing in the hallway. Jack was the Founder and CEO of a huge business organization so I instantly recognized him from his pictures. I expected him to be surrounded with his top managers and guards. Instead he was by himself answering questions from two old ladies. Pat and I were too awed to say anything -- although we summed up courage to introduce ourselves after his great speech (which included a warning to beware of schemes being sold in nearby booths promising to “beat the market”).
Mel has told you about the wonderful time we had at my family birthday dinner shared with Mel; and winning the sailing regatta and the dockside Birthday party afterwards prepared by son Michael and his wife, Joyce.
Our Boglehead Chapter meeting the next day was an unforgettable experience for those who attended. Boglehead neighbors met one another. Thanks to Mel's secret arrangements, Queen Laura called; Rick Ferri arrived; and then we heard the voice of my friend and hero, Jack Bogle, singing Happy Birthday with the Bogleheads providing chorus. Finally, Jack recited his beautiful poem made for me! I never heard Jack sing or write a poem before. Hearing his great voice and the beautiful poem from the man whom I idolize. What an honor!
I’m not gifted like Jack, and I couldn't think of words rhyming with Bogle, but I’ll try to tell Jack how much he means to me -- and all humanity:
I searched and searched in Google
To oogle a word that rhymes with “Bogle.”
I want to show my love for this mogul.
Who changed my life in total.
Thank you and best wishes.
Taylor

Re: TAYLOR'S 90th BIRTHDAY
Hi Again, Taylor:
I just had to add one thought after meeting so many of your extremely nice personal friends in Miami.
Nice people seem to attract nice people, and you're a magnet!
Love you, my dear friend. I'm so happy I got to share this special occasion with you.
Best regards,
Mel

Taylor, you have changed so many of OUR lives. I love your poem just as much as I love Mr. Bogle's.

Here's a quick snap of Rick Ferri, Mel holding up the phone on which Mr. Bogle was speaking, and Taylor.

Re: TAYLOR'S 90th BIRTHDAY
Nice to see you're still around the forums, Lynn. For those who don't know, Lynn was one of the original Vanguard Diehards and was there at the very beginning of the birth of the Bogleheads.LynnC wrote:Happy, happy birthday to you Taylor, my dear friend.
