I agree.Harold wrote:That's a good segue into a poster this forum should miss: opponent process. I loved it.

The one you are referring was Dr Nancy who use to post on the our old M* forum. She had excellent advice. She did come back one time to state that she had her financial life set and had moved on to other things and wished us all well. She was truly a great contributor.tom d37 wrote:Was Laura the doctor that used to post quite frequently?

I have always suspected the "Weekly Lampoon" was penned by Petrocelli, mostly because of the style. (And it was funny as hell!)CABob wrote:Weekly Lampoon.

Did Petrocelli ever own up to it, or did someone "out" him in a thread I missed?
Anyway, I miss it too.

Along these lines there are more than a few major contributors (1000+ posts) who have not only left but gone to considerable effort to remove most or all of their contributions.jenny345 wrote:I went back to look at one of his threads and all of his posts, at least from that thread, looked like they had all been self deleted.OZAR wrote:I have not seen a post by FredFlinstone in some time....

come to mind, although there are almost certainly more. Given their considerable contributions, it's a loss all around that they ended up feeling so dissatisfied with BH to depart so destructively.

Re: Which Boglehead inactive member do you miss the most?
Possible dissatisfaction/anger with the forum is an interesting "take" on why certain people may have practiced mass deletion of their own previous posts. That possibility hadn't occurred to me. I'd always figured that for one reason or another they'd decided to stop posting, and simultaneously had second thoughts about the amount of personal information they'd publicly revealed along the way, so wanted to remove it from further view. . . . But, who knows?xerty24 wrote:Along these lines there are more than a few major contributors (1000+ posts) who have not only left but gone to considerable effort to remove most or all of their contributions. . . . There's eight million stories in the Naked City, bound to be some interesting conflicts when it involves something as passionate as money.
Re: Which Boglehead inactive member do you miss the most?
If you look at the topics, they are mostly impersonal ones (portfolio reviews, discussions of I bonds, news, etc). It's possible there's another reason here besides spite, but that's my first guess without knowing the specific circumstances.MarcMyWord wrote:Possible dissatisfaction/anger with the forum is an interesting "take" on why certain people may have practiced mass deletion of their own previous posts. Re: Which Boglehead inactive member do you miss the most?
LH2004 was a whip at tax law and helped hundreds with answers. He was on the 'Backdoor Roth' thing back in 2007 and giving answers before you could find them anywhere else. He didn't mince words, had a beautiful concise writing style, and would butt heads with anyone if he felt he were right. And that, was the rub that led to his departure.
edit to add: This is some prime LH2004 on being audited, from an excellent thread on the topic of substantially identical that retiredjg spoke of.

I don't play the audit lottery -- knowingly doing illegal things and hoping I don't get caught -- but, in that situation, it's perfectly appropriate for me to take into account that there's an overwhelming probability that whatever I decide won't ever be challenged, and, if it is, I'll probably win.
There is just no moral justification for always assuming the law favors the IRS over you.
If you think along those lines, you're in danger of just substituting your own view of what the law should be for what it actually is. That is neither legally appropriate nor morally acceptable -- and pretending the law says something anti-taxpayer, while it's certainly less likely to ever be challenged by the IRS, is at heart no different.
Again, I'm not telling anyone what to do or how to file their taxes afterwards, but, in my opinion, under the law as it exists today, as reflected in decades of court rulings and IRS positions, the similarity of holdings, investment strategy, index, and returns are just not relevant to the determination of whether stock in different funds is "substantially identical."

heh heh While I personally agree with almost every poster that has been mentioned so far as being missed (No one else misses Market Timer? I do), I knew a thread like this would eventually have someone *ask* if anyone missed that one.... I am glad your post ended with a question mark. I suppose one or two uber-contrarians might miss that one, and all I can offer them is that he has his very own site and seems more than willing to chat with anyone who goes by there so if anyone *does* miss him, he is easy enough to find.
Cheers!
