For how long will the forum be around?

Post by get_g0ing » Mon May 13, 2019 8:13 pm

Hi,

I was just wondering, how many years in the future will this forum be around? 10 years, 100 years?

What do people think?

Thanks.

until there's no longer demand. Why supply what is no longer demanded? Do you think there will ever be a point at which people will no longer demand investment/consumer advice?

Short of that, if bogleheads ever runs out of money for operations and/or volunteers to maintain the site (oh and people willing to provide high-quality content gratis).

Bogleheads:

This forum, which reflects "The Wisdom of Jack Bogle," and is now the largest non-commercial financial forum on the internet, should be around for many years to come.

Many in the financial industry would like to see us disappear. However, if we continue to espouse Jack's wisdom, and continue to be properly moderated, I believe our future is unlimited.

As actionable as "Stocks are in Freefall" - even though the market trend has been up since the origination of that thread.

Until everybody agrees on tilting
Until everybody agrees on how much international to hold.
Until everybody agrees on factors
Until everybody agrees on the usefulness of CAPE
Until everybody agrees on a withdrawal method
Until everybody agrees that the 3 fund portfolio is ideal for everybody

I expect that we will get consensus on all of these any day now. :D

AOL lasted 8 or 9 years
Myspace lasted about 6 years (being generous)
Facebook started in 2007 and is still going (but I believe already in the decline)
Bogleheads also started in 2007, but as far as I can tell is still quite popular and growing

When that happens, the forum software can handle it.

The forum software can also manage a very large number of members - in the billions. We might need a larger server, though.

As Bogleheads are fond of saying, every investing strategy works until it doesn’t. Therefore, when the BH strategy fails, the forum will cease to exist in the way it currently does.

How’s that?

So far, this is my favorite answer.

Though, I have to point out, the forum would almost definitely continue to exist well beyond the "point of failure" - the combination of long-term thinking and, dare I say it, stubbornness, would see to that.

Until some media superior to the Internet replaces it. When that happens, some form similar to or identical to bogleheads.org will likely be there.

This was my first thought too. Aside from the wealth of information, two reasons Bogleheads is so successful are because of the commitment of the excellent moderators and the well thought out forum rules that promote civility.
