SITE OFFLINE (Nov 25) Sunday, 5:00 PM Eastern (22:00 UTC) - software upgrade

Post by LadyGeek »

[The forum software has been upgraded on November 25. Due to recent posts (below), I have retitled the thread. --LadyGeek]

The site will be offline today to update the forum software. This is a security upgrade and should be done as soon as possible.

I expect the update to take less than 1 hour.

(This thread is posted in the Forum Issues and Administration forum, but appears in all forums.)

As a retired IT guy, I salute your team for working part of the holiday weekend. Thank you! I’m glad your change window is a reasonable hour, and not oh-dark-30.

Fellow IT guy here too. I am glad you don't have to do this at 3am.

Thanks.

For those composing long posts, it's good practice to save your work in a separate text editor (notepad.exe on Windows).

Not just for the site going offline, but to avoid losing your work if you accidentally close your browser.

An additional tip: Your browser saves what you type. If you hit "Submit" and lose your work, use your browser's "back" button. The content should be there. Then, save your post in a text editor for later use.

Moi aussi. Overnight software upgrades are the pits.

Sometimes, when I make a post, I get a "site not found" screen. When I refresh the page, the site is there, but my post is gone. The back button will not retrieve it. So, I have found that I can highlight the post before I submit it, and click on "copy". Then, if the "site not found" screen appears, I can go back to my post and click on "paste" and all is restored. I have started taking this precaution on all of my posts and sometimes it saves me from retyping the entire post.

I'm not sure why you're getting a "site not found" screen which disappears upon refresh. Perhaps your browser's cache needs to be cleared?

Final bump for visibility.

Sounds like a sporadic internet connectivity issue on your end.

Cheers

WOW. You are awesome. On the dot at 5 ET went offline and now back within 30 minutes.
Thank you.

Did the software upgrade do something to the wiki. I can't see any of the pages anymore.

There does seem to be a problem. Wiki pages appear blank in Firefox, while a get a 500 error in Chrome.
