SITE OFFLINE Sunday 10 AM Eastern (14:00 UTC) - software upgrade

Post by LadyGeek » Sat Sep 02, 2017 8:09 pm

The site will be offline Sunday, 10 AM Eastern (14:00 UTC) to update some server software. Nothing is changing in the forum or wiki.

I expect the update to take less than 1 hour.

(This thread is posted in the Forum Issues and Administration forum, but appears in all forums.)

Perhaps it would be better if updates were performed at night, as is common.

The site admins are volunteers who have day jobs. I'm sure for the right price they would be willing to work nights.

Thanks for all of the work you do, Lady Geek and team!

I'd prefer the admins do updates at at a time when they'd be able to work through any problems that crop up, and if that happens to be in the morning, so be it. It's not necessarily common for updates to be done only at night - many admins perform updates when the updates become available, even when that results in downtime.

Bumping for visibility.

As stlutz says, we admins have day jobs and are indeed doing this as volunteers.

^^^ You're welcome.

We're back. The upgrade was successful; the server is working just fine. :)

Here's where I reveal (once again) how oblivious I am to things: have you always posted these announcements on every sub-forum? I don't ever remember seeing them before.

(The only time I come to this particular board is when I think BH had gone offline a bit before.)

Thank you LadyGeek, Mingstar and all the admins and moderators and everyone for keeping our Boglehead server and forum happy and healthy 8-)
We go into serious depression without it.

The forum software allows announcements and stickies. An announcement can be designated as a global announcement so it appears on every forum, as was the case today.
