Site OFFLINE TODAY, Saturday, at 4 PM Eastern (21:00 UTC)

[Title was "relocation [Bogleheads website temporarily relocated]" See the updated post below. --admin LadyGeek]

I've just moved the web site to another server.

It will remain there until I have the original server set up in a new colocation facility.

Yes, thank you. I retitled the thread.

Good question, as an engineer would have the same questions for an investing forum, e.g. What does Index fund mean? :)

Here you go: What is a Colocation Facility?

Update: I corrected the thread title to say that the website has moved to a different server.

For reference, here's mingstar's post: Subject: scheduled down time morning of January 22
mingstar wrote:Hi folks,

There will be a brief down-time the morning of Sunday, January 22. Here's the scoop:

In an effort to increase site reliability, I am moving the site's server into a colocation facility with better capability and connectivity.

To do so, I will temporarily transfer the site onto another server and then ship the original server to the new location. Once everything is at the new colocation facility is configured properly, I'll transfer the site from the temporary server to original machine.

I'm starting the process tomorrow at around 8AM EST.

Larry

P.S> there's a lot more to say about the new facility; it's pretty remarkable. I'll relay all of that when we're back in business at that location.
In summary, this website is temporarily running on a different server. Once the Bogleheads' server is up and running in its new home, mingstar will transfer everything back over and provide the details.

The permanent server is operating in its new home.

I'll need to shut down the temporary server for a while to make the transfer to the permanent server.

I will shut down the site starting at around 2:00 PM Saturday, February 11.

I expect it to take a few hours to copy the data and get things back on-line.

Once it's all done, I'll post an announcement on another thread to describe what took place.

^^^ I retitled the thread to clarify the intent of mingstar's post.

This thread is posted in the Forum Issues and Administration forum, but is intentionally made visible in all forums.

I spoke too soon. mingstar got delayed. The server transfer is now scheduled for 4 PM Eastern (21:00 UTC).

Nothing's wrong, just available time.

The time stamp on your last post is in the future...how do you do that?? What's it like up there? Everything still okay? No asteroid strikes or alien invasions twenty minutes hence, hopefully??

Check the time zone settings in the User Control Panel (link in upper right corner).

User Control Panel --> Board preferences --> Edit global settings (must be logged in, goes to your account)

My location is Philadelphia, which is UTC - 5 hours. The setting for "My timezone" is "UTC-05:00".

I am running the preliminary file synchronization. This will take the largest part of the time. I'm going to leave the site up while it runs at the expense of a little more work at the end. It will also affect performance while it's running, so don't be surprised if the site is sluggish.

I suspect this site grew beyond the capacities of your typical home server many, many years ago.

I feel like I must be young. There was a time that people hosted things on servers at home as a normal practice?

Yes, and it still isn't that abnormal. Of course hosted sites are so cheap, but typically painful to deal with...

Small things, yes. I run my own home servers for small things. Even medium things can be run on a home setup without much hoop-jumping to support it. But the traffic for this site has exceeded small and medium things for a while.
