Slow loading of pages.

Post by gkaplan » Sun Nov 20, 2016 10:13 pm

The forum seems awfully slow in loading pages at times today.

I can also confirm that I've noticed it as well. No real pattern that I've been able to determine.

I have also gotten some warnings from Firefox, "The page cannot be displayed because the authenticity of the received data cannot be confirmed." This has happened two or three times this evening.

I've had random slow page loading since the upgrade last weekend. I just assumed it was doing some database maintenance on the back-end related to the upgrade and it would work itself out in a week or two.

But maybe it's working itself up for the another holiday melt-down, because if a server could have a personality, this server seems to like to have problems on holidays. Maybe it likes to spend the holidays with mingstar.

I did not experience any slow loading of the website over the holiday.

C'mon! Isn't it CyberMonday? Stuffing all those packets through the internet wires and cables must've have slowed things down.

I'm seeing slow loading of pages again today. The delay seems to be in the "connecting" and "Establishing secure connection" phase, not the actual page loading.

It's slow for me. Like a fifteen second delay between clicking "post reply" and getting the screen with the editing box, and then another fifteen seconds to return to the thread viewer.

However, it's just slow--no error message, no lost data.

It's as slow as a ball of Silly Putty soaking into the lining of the pants pocket where you stuffed it to hide it from the teacher.

I think it is all the new year's resolution types: "gotta get control of my money". The gym will be hell for the next 45 days or so, perhaps this forum will be slow for a week or two.

It is most definitely slow today. My first thought was degraded WIFI but Speedtest shows 80mb per sec.

It's not slow for me, but I have noticed some other websites being slow. Enough so that I got paranoid and ran Antimalware, but nothing showed up. I ran a speed test and that was fine.

Traceroute shows the most delay while transiting through Level3 in Las Vegas. I would assume that is the backbone provider that the hosting company is using. I don't see anything posted yet about issues on Level3 today, but it wouldn't be the first time it has had issues. I think it was just last month that they had major slowdowns.

Edit: Typo

According to my browser, it seems to be a TLS handshake issue.

Yep. I'm seeing "Firefox is performing a TLS handshake" slowdowns all over Bogleheads today.

bogleheads.org irregularly slow response times

Post by BolderBoy » Tue Jan 23, 2018 2:03 pm

Within the last month or two I've noticed that the website has developed an annoyingly SLOW response time, but it isn't consistent. Things will go along speedily - click on a forum topic and it loads almost immediately - then for no reason I can discern, clicking on a topic results in, "Establishing secure connection..." responses which take seconds to resolve. Eventually the topic loads.

Seems to happen irregularly whether I'm logged in or simply browsing as a guest.

Using latest version of Chrome on Win10 with all updates applied.

Anyone else noticing this?

^ I merged Bolderboy's topic on the same issue into this existing topic.

The last I heard, this was being worked on. I do not know if it was ever resolved. I asked again.

mingstar (site owner and server admin) has fixed the problem.

As noted in New Record? [number of posts in a day], the number of posts the server is seeing has increased. mingstar made an adjustment to accommodate the increase.

So, it's a good problem to have.
