Mel,

you, livesoft, nisiprius, Valuethinker, and I are going to have to step it up a bit. Let's not take so long to get to 4,000,000. I have been told the second 2,000,000 is easier than the first 2,000,000 because of compounding. We will have to see.

My sentiments exactly! The membership here is amazingly helpful. And I hope people appreciate the work of the mods, site owners and also the wiki contributors who carry on the mission started by Mr. Bogle. No doubt many millions of dollars have remained in the pockets of investors through the efforts of all.

Smart investing isn't hard!

Can you pick up the pace a bit, sscritic? You seem to be slacking off lately. Is old age catching up with you? :-)

Seriously, we're now getting between 1,000 and 1,500 posts per day, so at that rate we could hit the 3,000,000 post mark in a couple more years.

On a related note, post 1,999,999 was made by none other than Taylor Larimore, in A Case for Individual Bonds? I've got a screenshot with the odometer at 2,000,000 posts and I am working with LadyGeek to share it.

By request, here's post #2,000,000: Subject: Mr. Money Mustache: Hero or Foolish?
Novine wrote:"That's just not possible for someone in middle class. His "true" audience is really someone who has a lot of money already"

I'm not a MMM follower but from what I've read on his site, I've read quite a bit that would help someone in the middle class retire sooner than they could otherwise. If the typical middle-class family did the following:

1. Prioritized retirement savings
2. Invested in low-cost index funds
3. Lived within or below their means
4. Lived and worked where they could be a one-car household

many people with middle class salaries could accelerate the date at which they could retire and be financially comfortable, if not financially independent.

Seriously: It's a great milestone, and testimony to the number of people who find useful things to give or receive here.

Not seriously: Of course, if you exclude all the threads about "lump sum or dollar–cost average?", the forum's total post count probably drops to around 500,000. :)

With 36,128 users, the 1% are the top 361 posters. What percent of all the "wealth" (creation) is in the hands of the 1%?

P.S. By my count, there are 9,321 members with zero posts, so the top 1% of actual posters are the top 268 posters.

From sscritic data if we have 36K users, seems that average number of posts is 55. If we discount 9K users who have not posted any thing, users on an average have posted 75 posts. Very active community here. I will be interested to know how many top 1% and top 10% have posted here.

Would this help? You can sort the member list by post count - just click on the heading, click again to reverse the order. Here it is, sorted in decending order: Members

To find the zeros, don't reverse the order, i.e., click once, not twice (although three clicks works as well). Now I am waiting for LG (or anyone) to do the addition for me. For some reason, the copy and paste from that page into my spreadsheet isn't working properly. Top 250 will do (only 5 pages of 50 per).

You can hack the URL. Just change the starting count until it hits 1. It only took a few tries.

Code: Select all

http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/memberlist.php?sk=d&sd=a&start=9350
There are 14 '0' posts on the above page. So, 9363 = 9350 + 14 - 1

The -1 is because that's the starting count on the page.

There is a much simpler way. Use the Find a member functionality of the Members page? Set Posts: Equal to 0, which shows 9364 users.

Using this feature, Did you know that only 342 members have more than 999 posts?

Feel free to do your own experimenting with the query parameters.

I guess I shouldn't have subtracted the '1' from my previous calculation (9363 users). In any case, my Posts: Equal to 0 shows 9360 users. Perhaps my rank as site admin gives me different numbers.

In any case, sscritic should enough info to answer his question.
