In the past I have occasionally been puzzled by the reasoning for locking some threads. As I value this forum and appreciate the work done by the administrators I have kept my thoughts to myself. Earlier today (August 13, 2013) a thread entitled "Ideas, thoughts on DNA Testing?" was locked.
The thread began with the OP expressing interest in learning more about his/her genetic history. The OP asked for input about three services, one of which I have used, to learn more about his/her heritage. The OP made no mention of health or medical issues.
Then came the second post: "i need to test DNA to see what are the the potential disease i carry so i can prevent if any or save my life..."
The third post is an announcement from an administrator "While the intent is to discuss family ancestry, this topic is medical in nature and off-topic. See: Forum Policy..." "...This thread is also locked in anticipation that the discussion will rapidly turn into a contentious discussion of medical issues and ethics (not actionable)."
Why would a thread be locked because a secondary poster introduced an issue not addressed by the OP? What information was provided by the OP that would cause the whole thread to turn into a contentious discussion of medical issues and ethics?
Personally I found DNA testing to be very informative about my genealogy. It validated work I had previously completed using traditional research and provided insight into my family history going back thousands of years.
Can we expect every thread to be locked if a secondary poster adds something that may violate forum policy?

Re: Baffled by some locked threads
I am not an administrator, but generally threads related to medical issues/topics have been locked.

Re: Baffled by some locked threads
The moderators have full discretion to lock threads per board policy. As you yourself read and quoted, a moderator wrote "locked in anticipation that the discussion will rapidly turn into a contentious discussion of medical issues and ethics (not actionable)." That statement there already answers the questions you pose above.Allocationist wrote: "...This thread is also locked in anticipation that the discussion will rapidly turn into a contentious discussion of medical issues and ethics (not actionable)."

Certain topics have proven to be ones which more readily devolve than others, the moderators can freely use this previous experience as well as any hunches about where a topic may go. Non financial/investing topics will likely receive particular scrutiny. Any questions involving the moderators' actions are also not appropriate for forum threads, and board policy directs you to PM a moderator personally if you wish to discuss rather than initiate a discussion via a public thread.

Hi,
If you wish to discuss why I (or another moderator) locked a thread, please PM me instead of posting publicly here. See: Forum Policy under "Member Rights in a Dispute"
BTW, we will unlock a thread if the member provides a good reason (via PM).
(Thread locked to prevent further discussion.)

I'll let this thread stand so new members are aware of the forum policy. It's put in place for a number of reasons.Notifying the Advisory Board via PM or e-mail is the only acceptable outlet for complaints regarding Moderator action. Members do not have the right to take their appeal to the rest of the forum or to complain publicly about Moderator actions. Follow-up topics complaining of alleged ill-treatment by Moderators by the original poster, or any other member, will be deleted and may result in further administrative action. If you see such a post, please do not respond. Even if you support the Moderator's action, your post will be deleted with the rest.
