Is the time of messages incorrect?

I figure I may as well ask this after several months. I am on the east coast and have the settings as such. It is now 5:29 PM (17:29). A post now is listed as if it was an hour later. Am I doing something wrong.

Yes, you don't live in Chicago. You should see the times we get on the West Coast.

Yup, I sent it at 5:30 PM and it shows up as posted at 6:30 PM.

It is now 2:30 out west, and my post and yours both show 3:30.

I have the answer: bogleheads is on perpetual daylight saving time.

That's funny because all of these messages are showing up timed at 4:30 ish on my computer. Which is Chicago time. But calm man is saying it shows up 2 hours in the wrong direction, right?

Guess what? Our computers are in the twilight zone. Yours says 3:30 when it is 2:30 and mine says 6P30 when it is 5:30. So at least the system recognizes time zones and your conclusion that bogleheads.org is on perpetual DST is probably the one. I will edit the title so maybe a moderator can see it and if they didn't know about this see if they are interested in correcting it. The world goes on regardless.

Board preferences. Remove the check from the "use daylight saving time" radio button.

Wait a minute, or sixty! I just lost an hour (or did I gain one). :)

It's actually
Summer Time/DST is in effect:
Yes No

For those who don't know, Alex is in Chicago, and that's what time it's set for.

Actually, displayed times are based on the "My timezone:" setting on this page: http://www.bogleheads.org/forum/ucp.php ... e=personal

I think it is working right for me - I'm in Utah and it is shortly after 3:30 here. But my posts show up as posted just after 4:30 which would be Chicago time. But how calm man is getting things posted 2 hours wrong is a mystery to me.

This thread is now in the Forum Issues and Administration forum.

Check your daylight savings time settings: User Control Panel --> Board Preferences --> Edit global settings --> Summer Time/DST is in effect: (No for me).

You need to change this manually.

For those not logged in, the timezone is set to US Eastern Timezone, Daylight Savings TIme is in effect. Why? Because that's where I set it. (This forum is worldwide, the East coast US +1/ 0 hours is good enough.)

To see how your time is displayed, you don't need to create a post. Just look in the upper left corner of the Board index

You still have to answer the DST question correctly. That is very difficult for many of us.

So we have to update this manually twice a year?

Yes. I just changed mine and it took 3 tries to get it right....

So now things are posting at a time that is consistent with my time zone.

You need a new battery for your computer's internal clock.

On the forum page ( http://www.bogleheads.org/forum ), it correctly shows my local time. However, on the main page ( http://www.bogleheads.org/ ), it still shows the Chicago time. Is it the BH way of clocking? -:)

Just set it to UTC & learn to convert UTC timestamps to your local time. For example, US Central time is UTC-6 when DST is not active and UTC-5 when DST is active.

I am saying it shows up ONE hour later (I don't know if that's the right or wrong direction).

If it doesn't say forum, it is not a Rolex. Bogleheads.org is a cheap knockoff.

Well I set DST to off. Guess what -- the forum time is now correct at 6:30 PM. The time in the message is correct. But where the time of the last message posted is listed, it is now listed 1 hour BEHIND (meaning 5:30 PM --17:32). So I turned DST off and corrected one or two things but gained (lost - I don't know ) 2 hours flipping 1 hour to the other side. This is fun. I relogged on but will do it a few more times and maybe the server will get happy with me.

Are you looking at org or org/forum? They only agree in Chicago. Alex gets one perk for all his work.

For me, the last post on org is 17:48, on forum it is 3:48 pm aka 15:48. You go the other way I expect.

Only if it bothers you enough to do it. I just leave mine set to the default. The order of posts and relative times between posts will always be correct. That's good enough for me.

I am retired and do not care what forum clocks are saying. Only my clocks in my house need to be correct so I can keep any appointments.

I've had trouble with the time also. I thought I had it set correctly but I think the DST thing was my problem as I was always an hour off so I set my time zone to be 1 hour west of me to get the time correct. I'll see if the time is right now with this post. Hope so!

BINGO it was the DST thingie. posted at the time it is displaying I posted. :)

Do you run them 5 minutes ahead to account for your own slowing down? The timer on my sprinkler system loses about a minute a day, so I reset it about once a week. Otherwise I will end up violating my city's watering ordinance.

That was it. When I first joined, I set the time correctly. After your post, I checked again and I was on Afghanistan time! No idea how that happened as I had to figure out how to even change the time setting. All seems to be ok now. Thanks!

This is all a subtle reminder that as Bogleheads we should not attempt to time the market!
