Welcome new Advisory Board members

Post by Alex Frakt » Sun Sep 16, 2012 2:28 pm

We've just done a general cleanup of the forum governance infrastructure. This included slightly redefining the role of the Advisory Panel (and renaming it to Advisory Board). Here's the updated description from the forum policies:
Advisory Board

The governing body of this forum is the Advisory Board, which will advise the site owners on policy issues and is responsible for all major disciplinary actions such as banning members (other than spammers) and for review of disputes over moderator actions. The Advisory Board may take any actions the members feel are necessary for the good working of this forum. A private subforum has been provided for the exclusive use of the Advisory Board to facilitate such discussions.

The Advisory Board includes site officers - Site Admins, Moderators and Wiki Admins - and at least two regular members of the community who are selected by general agreement of the existing board. Moderators shall not make up a majority of the Advisory Board.
It also included removal of inactive members from the various positions including moderator, admins and the Advisory Board. The last has left us without any "civilian" members of the Advisory Board as well as an insufficient number of non-moderator members. In order to remedy this, two of our most-respected and reasonable members, nisiprius and grabiner, have agreed to join the Advisory Board. In addition, Taylor Larimore, who as one of the original bogleheads, set the standard of civility that that sets us apart from most investing sites, has agreed to step down as a moderator to serve as a non-officer member.

Taylor, grabiner, and nisiprius now have "Advisory Board" under their usernames on posts. Previously we have not released the usernames of the non-officer Advisory Board members. This was done at the request of one of our original members who held a sensitive office with the US government, but in retrospect it was a bad decision. The Advisory Board was conceived in part to reassure members that they do have input into Board decisions and to ensure them that moderators can not act with impunity. Hiding the names of the members has worked against these goals. Feel free to PM them if you have an issue that you think should be brought to the attention of the Board. Of course, you can also continue to notify other officers. And don't forget we have a report button (the "!" on a triangle) at the top of each post if it's an issue on a single thread.

Thank you to all the owners, moderators and site officers. And thank you and congratulations to the new Advisory Board members - very well chosen!

You all do a lot of work behind the scenes to make this a nice place to hang out. Bravo!

Alex has done a great job with this board. It is to his credit, as well as to the credit of other moderators, officers and board members, that such care is being taken and so much effort is being invested to establish such a thoughtful governance system. Well done and thank you. I will, however, be profoundly disappointed if Nisiprius should begin to show so much restraint because of this new power that he fails to continue routinely challenging accepted wisdom. His new power should only be used for good, but skewering false argumenta ad populum is very good indeed.

I did not even know there was an advisory board, but I am very grateful to those that serve and allow this great site to continue

Is the Advisory Board like trade union representatives on the Board of Directors?

Obviously, Taylor continues to set the standard of civility. This would be a very different forum without his presence.

Victoria---such a thoughtful point. Really made me think, though I do appreciate the modifications just announced.

ledzep wrote:Good work Mr Frakt, but there are still two big missing pieces of the puzzle:
#1 In addition to not having, until now, a list of the non-officer users to which appeals may be addressed as members of the advisory board, there still isn't any list of which forum users are the "officers". Since the forum policy instructs normal users to address complaints to these individuals via PM (and especially to board members who were "not involved in the initial dispute") it would be extremely helpful to have a complete list stated, not only in a buried thread like this, but somewhere under the prominent and easily accessible "Forum Policy" link.
#2 Considering your explicit threat detailed in the Forum Policy of attacking banned users by means of law enforcement, civil lawsuit, and employment, it would be extremely foolish for a mistakenly/unfairly banned user to submit a dispute to bhadmin@bogleheads.org...so even if they knew who they should contact, banned members (who cannot send PMs) who did not, in fact, violate forum policy have no safe mechanism for filing disputes with the advisory board whatsoever.
