Bogleheads forum on iOS issue

Post by JC Denton »

When I use safari on my iPad (iOS) the buttons for edits, delete and other navigational buttons show up as blank squares.

This has been happening for a while and I believe it has to do with apple no longer supporting flash.

Anyone else experience this?

It doesn't have anything to do with apple no longer support flash -- Bogleheads' web pages don't use flash to begin with.

iOS has never supported flash, AFAIK.

Everything looks fine on my iOS devices. Maybe you're using a device with a now obsolete/unsupported version of iOS?

I normally use Chrome on my iPad Pro, but I just checked with Safari and it seems to work fine.

Is your iOS current (14.7.1)?

Yes. Those little buttons above are blank squares, I don’t know which is edit reply or quote.

Happens on a variety of sites.

Could it be ad blockers?

This has been happening for a year. Does not happen on other browsers. 7th ge iPad updated.

You could exclude Bogleheads from your adblocker (since there are no ads anyway) and see if that fixes it. For what it’s worth, it works fine on my iPhone.

What ad blocker do you use? I use Adguard and the site works fine for me. I'm on the latest version of iOS and use only Safari.

BTW, I noticed you mention the problem is on your iPad. iPad uses iPadOS. They stopped using iOS a while back.

They stopped supporting flash in 2020 which is when my trouble began.

What happens if you disable the ad blocker?

Any chance you still have flash installed on it?

That article talks about Adobe ending support for Flash. Apple never supported Flash on Safari on iOS, and so Adobe's ending support in 2020 could not possibly have anything to do with the functionality of this site, which also never used Flash. Whatever the issue is, it has NOTHING to do with Flash.

I’ve not had this problem on my iPad. Since you use an ad blocker (I don’t) I agree with others it is a likely cause. Images are injected into the web page much like ads.

Flash was never supported on iOS/iPadOS. And Bogleheads doesn't use Flash.

Everything looks and works fine for me.

The symbols in those buttons are fontawesome icons. Here is an old fontawesome support thread that was closed as a Safari problem because it also occurred on other web fonts.
https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/issues/7770

Workarounds included white listing the site in the ad blocker, clearing cache and force reloading the web page.

I've never seen these problems using either my iPhone or iPad Pro with the latest OS versions installed, nor any previous versions of the OS.

I strongly suspect your ad block is being too aggressive and as mentioned in

it would seem to be blocking the required icons that are provided via Font-Awesome's framework.

In the version history of Blockbear on the app store version 1.1 says, "Bear now trained to block custom fonts. Good bear."
