I was curious what savings ideas for data plans y'all have? I'm finding that I spend over $1,000 a year for two phones (iphones) with data plans. I do get a nice $10/month discount on my internet.
I'm up for even switching networks.

Yeah, the T-mobile $30/month prepaid plan is what I'm seriously considering. I have a dumb phone right now and would like to upgrade to a smart phone but don't really want to pay the much higher price each month. I'm also considering VM.linuxuser wrote:$500 for smartphone service isn't that bad.
I have $30/month with T-mobile. Unlimited web and text and 100 minutes.
If you already have ATT iPhones, and just want cheaper service, I would check out this:Spades wrote:Heya Guys,

The smartphone I bought for this plan the Samsung Exhibit II 4G is now being offloaded for $130. I paid $190. It runs Android 2.3.SVT wrote:Yeah, the T-mobile $30/month prepaid plan is what I'm seriously considering. Virgin Mobile's network is pretty sparse in places. OTOH, an actual Sprint plan lets you roam on Verizon at no charge. I love my Sprint service and out of the 3 major carriers, it's been the best deal for 6 years now. My parents live in a tiny town so I can't bring myself to switch to something where I have no service when I go back to visit them.Momus wrote:I am using Virgin Mobile 3G $25/month: 300 mins, unlimited data and text.
New plan and phones comes with 4G $35/month: 300 mins, unlimited data and text..
The network runs on sprint so it's not as wide as AT&T or Verizon, but the price can't be beat ;D
Even better: extra minutes are only $0.10. That's equal to the cheapest prepaid minutes you can get today. It really is a screaming deal for smartphones. They are even refarming their spectrum nationwide this year to give iPhones 3G speeds, even though they don't sell the iPhone!linuxuser wrote:$500 for smartphone service isn't that bad.

Wow, this could be perfect for my wife and I. I really like how you can pick and choose each option. Do they have roaming charges and if so, do you know how much those are?Petunia wrote:I've recently switched to Ting. They are a new company, but they use Sprint's network. They have very low prices. I'm saving just over $100 per month on my cell bill. You do have to buy a phone from them. They are month to month only, no contracts. I switched on June 19th. So far, the service is flawless.
I believe there aren't any roaming charges. I live in California, and I went to Honolulu and Kona last month. I made several phone calls, there were no roaming charges.sunnyday wrote:Wow, this could be perfect for my wife and I. I really like how you can pick and choose each option. If that's including all the taxes, I don't think you can do much better than that. That's only $83/month for 2 smartphones.Spades wrote:Heya Guys,

I wouldn't call it a scam, that is very transparent pricing actually that reflects the actual costs of the new phone you get.investor1 wrote: T-Mobile does have one hell of a scam when it comes to buying cell phones from them, but you can always purchase a phone on your own and stick your SIM card in it without their involvement. They charge you a percentage for the phone up front. For example, they are charging about $250 for the Galaxy SIII. Then they charge you a monthly fee to pay for the phone (on top of your plan). For the SII, they were asking $20/month for 20 months. Basically, you end up paying retail for the phone. I opted to just buy a phone on my own.
What are the taxes with Ting? They say they are required to collect .. but other prepaid carriers don't.Petunia wrote:I believe there aren't any roaming charges. I suggest you call and ask. When I called with a question, a bona fide live human being answered the phone.
I was charged $3.47 in taxes. I have 3 lines, 1000 minutes, 1000 text, no data.mikep wrote: What are the taxes with Ting? They say they are required to collect .. but other prepaid carriers don't.
This is what I currently have too. I'm guessing that you haven't bought a new smartphone recently as there will be an additional $10 surcharge per phone.bourg wrote:To get the cheapest price I usually recommend finding friends to bring your "group" up to 5 and going somewhere that allows for the full benefits of the parent plan but is cheap to add lines.
I have Sprint with 5 people. Unlimited text and data. ~1500 minutes. The 5 of us split the bill evenly and it comes out to ~$35/person.
Fatwallet.com Hot Deals forum used to have lots of threads on this. I set mine up years ago and haven't touched it so I'm not current on the best deals to make this happen.
Yep, it looks like no roaming charges for Ting in the US. The data coverage may not cover as much as Verizon or AT&T but seems good enough for my area.Petunia wrote:

This is great until it isn't. One person going MIA on payment on you sucks. Yes, I know it's only ~40/month but this happens to me.bourg wrote:I have Sprint with 5 people. Unlimited text and data. ~1500 minutes. The 5 of us split the bill evenly and it comes out to ~$35/person.
