TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I suspect I am missing something simple here but when I go to download our Vanguard 1099-Rs in TurboTax I am asked by TurboTax for the "Account Number" and "Document ID" on the Vanguard 1099-R. I did this for our brokerage accounts without issue, but the Vanguard 1099-Rs we have do not have a clearly stated "Account Number" or "Document ID".
What am I missing here?

Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I don't know. My Vanguard 1099-R has both an account number and a document ID. However, I don't import tax forms, but enter them manually and I certainly wasn't asked for the document ID (not sure about the account number), so it didn't get entered.
Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
To be clear, when you say "for our brokerage accounts" are you referring to your non-retirement / taxable brokerage accounts?cowdogman wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 3:59 pm I suspect I am missing something simple here but when I go to download our Vanguard 1099-Rs in TurboTax I am asked by TurboTax for the "Account Number" and "Document ID" on the Vanguard 1099-R. Also, I understand that those 1099-Rs are for Vanguard IRAs, but are those IRAs custodied with Vanguard Brokerage Service? (As opposed to directly with a Vanguard fund).

I never enter these. Have filed well over 1000 returns and never once included them.

Right, the taxable brokerage account's 1099-DIV and 1099-B had the required "Account Number" and "Document ID", but not the 1099-R did not. And I was in the TurboTax 1099-R section when it asked for the "Account Number" and "Document ID".sycamore wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 4:11 pm

You never include a 1099-R on a tax return?jebmke wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 4:11 pm I never enter these. Have filed well over 1000 returns and never once included them.
I looked at our Vanguard 1099-R from 2023 (rollover from IRA into solo 401(k). It had an "Account Number" and "Document ID" and I included it with the return.
The 1099-Rs this year are for rollovers from the solo 401(k) back to the IRA trustee to trustee (triggered by Vanguard getting out of the solo 401(k) business), which I understand requires reporting on a tax return. See https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/do-i-need- ... tax-return I think the same is true for both Trad and Roth accounts.
Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I misread your OP - thought you were entering them in on the 1099-R in the program and couldn't get the doc ID and account # to enter. I never download; not worth the bother.cowdogman wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 6:01 pmYou never include a 1099-R on a tax return?jebmke wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 4:11 pm I never enter these. Yes, I just finished entering them manually.jebmke wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 7:26 pm I misread your OP - thought you were entering them in on the 1099-R in the program and couldn't get the doc ID and account # to enter. I never download; not worth the bother.

Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I can see both the Account Number and Document ID on my 2024 Vanguard 1099-R that I downloaded from the Tax Information section of Vanguard's website.cowdogman wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 3:59 pm I suspect I am missing something simple here but when I go to download our Vanguard 1099-Rs in TurboTax I am asked by TurboTax for the "Account Number" and "Document ID" on the Vanguard 1099-R. The 1099-R is a large box which is subdivided into eight smaller boxes in roughly two columns and four rows. The contents of the cell which is the first row, first column reads "2024 Form 1099-R" in a relatively large, bold font. The Account Number and Document ID is in the cell which is the second row, second column.
My Vanguard accounts are traditional IRAs on the brokerage platform and the 1099-R exists because I did a Roth conversion.
My best guess is that your IRAs are under the old mutual fund platform and that Vanguard has chosen not to put the document ID on those as a way of encouraging you to migrate to the new brokerage platform, which they've been trying to get customers to switch to for years and years.
Entering by hand is fine; it's only a handful of entries. Doublecheck for typos.

That's my guess as well.secondcor521 wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 7:56 pm to u

Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I’ve never entered an account number or document ID into a tax form.
Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I had this same problem last year, and finally gave up and just entered the numbers manually. Based on your experience, I guess I'll be repeating the process again this year.cowdogman wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 7:27 pmYes, I just finished entering them manually.jebmke wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 7:26 pm I misread your OP - thought you were entering them in on the 1099-R in the program and couldn't get the doc ID and account # to enter. We've been on the "new" brokerage system for years.sycamore wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 8:37 pmThat's my guess as well.secondcor521 wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 7:56 pm to u

Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
Good to know, thanks. I'm stumped. I don't have a Vanguard IRA any longer. The last 1099-R I had from them (Roth conversion) a few years back didn't even have a document ID box.
Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
Does the cover letter to your 1099-R contain the following paragraph? (The cover letters to my family's 1099-Rs have 2 paragraphs. The "Document ID" paragraph is the 2nd paragraph.)
Just wondering whether your letter implies you are *supposed* to have a Document ID (the paragraph is present), but the actual document ID is missing ... or whether there is something as-yet-unidentified about your 1099-R that causes *both* the cover letter paragraph and the actual Document ID to be missing.Document ID: you will find your Document ID located in the header of the first page of your

No cover letter. And I seached the pdf for "Document ID"--no hits.cas wrote: Sun Feb 02, 2025 11:26 amDoes the cover letter to your 1099-R contain the following paragraph? (The cover letters to my family's 1099-Rs have 2 paragraphs. The "Document ID" paragraph is the 2nd paragraph.)

Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
My guess is that some of your accounts may be on the new brokerage system but the account associated with the 1099-R is still an old mutual fund platform account. It's possible to have a mixture of account types between mutual fund and brokerage (and you can see both types when logging in).
One way to tell is by looking at the account number. Old mutual fund account numbers are 11 digits long and are usually prepended with the four digit fund number. New brokerage account numbers are eight digits long.

I think you nailed it. I had no issues importing 1099 R from vanguard and my account is just as you described.secondcor521 wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 1:04 amMy guess is that some of your accounts may be on the new brokerage system but the account associated with the 1099-R is still an old mutual fund platform account. All of our Vanguard taxable and retirement accounts are brokerage (not mutual fund) accounts, and have been for several years. We switched them all at once.bikefish wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 7:41 amI think you nailed it. Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
I think I figured it out. These 1099-Rs are from rollovers from a Vanguard solo 401(k) to Vanguard IRAs. Vanguard must not be supporting downloads for the their solo 401(k) 1099-Rs for 2024--given that Vanguard is now out of the solo 401(k) business.
And those now defunct solo 401(k)s were mutual fund accounts.

Re: TurboTax Import of Vanguard 1099-R--No Document ID on Vanguard 1099-R
The only IDs I ever put in for 1099s of any flavor are the Federal Payer ID and the beginning of the Payer's name and address (via import or manual submission). Never had a problem ever.
