Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I've used Free File Fillable from the IRS successfully for a couple of years now.
This morning, I tried to start the process for the 2024 filing year. The website is asking me to create a new account (required every tax year), and then log in.
But when I try to log in, the system just takes me back to the sign-up screen. So I can't get to the place to actually start doing anything.
Has anybody successfully started completing a return with FFF this year?

I briefly looked at the site may use it for a simple 1041 if you think it is good.
Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
Yes, I created an account on Monday and have begun entering my data over the next few days. No issues so far. Haven't tried to sign into it today.
UPDATE: I signed in successfully just now, to verify still working for me.

Yes. I am 99% percent finished with a fairly complex MFJ return. Since not much has changed the past few years, it only took an hour to fill it in this year.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I set up the account about 3 days ago, entered all the info and e filed. This is my 5th year, and while the first year took quite awhile, once you get used to FFFF, it is quite user friendly as long as you have a good idea of what the completed forms should indicate. What was unusual is that I never received the e mail that the IRS had accepted the return, so just logged back in to Step 5 (e file) and saw that the return had been accepted.Stinky wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 11:57 am I've used Free File Fillable from the IRS successfully for a couple of years now.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I appreciate all of the feedback.
I’ve used FFFF for the past two years, with good results. So I’m a “somewhat experienced” user.
But this year, when I try to create an account, I’m getting neither email nor text confirmations that I’ve created an account. I can’t get past a sign in screen.
I’ll let this percolate over the weekend - maybe actually read the instructions - and try to regroup next week.
Once again, I appreciate your feedback. I’m glad that it’s working for others.

As far as I remember, FFFF has never had Form 1041 available for completion. Has that changed for tax year 2024 (I haven't established my 2024 account yet)? If so, that would be nice, as I have a 1041 to file and would like to do it using e-file at no charge.TBillT wrote: Sat Feb 01, 2025 12:19 pm I briefly looked at the site may use it for a simple 1041 if you think it is good.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I completed a submission of my 2024 return on 1/30/25 and received an email pretty quickly saying my return was queued for transmission, and to look for an email in a couple of days saying whether it was accepted or rejected. Have not (yet) received the expected email, but the FFFF website reported that my return was accepted a day or two ago.
Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
Exact same situation for me as I posted above. Sounds like the acceptance e mail may not be going out like it should, but as long as the site reports that the return was accepted, that's all that matters.beedotdeedot wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 11:35 am I completed a submission of my 2024 return on 1/30/25 and received an email pretty quickly saying my return was queued for transmission, and to look for an email in a couple of days saying whether it was accepted or rejected. Created account and started filling out forms on 1/31. No issues.
Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I use fillable forms every year. I filed my taxes the day it opened, have already received my refund.
Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
Just received the confirming e mail of acceptance by the IRS. It took 6 days after the e file transmitted. This is not normal, as there was likely a glitch that was corrected.Alan S. wrote: Mon Feb 03, 2025 12:09 pmExact same situation for me as I posted above. I'm new to this site and registered when I saw the same question about the fillable forms. Please forgive if I don't know my way around. Anyway, I'm having the same results that keeps taking me back to the login screen. So frustrating. Have you had any success? I'll look for your response.

And when I click through on the link to try to report a technical problem, I get the dreaded “web page not found”. So I can’t even contact the IRS via email.
I’m likely resorting to “Plan B”. That is, a commercial tax software package.

Dear Customer:
Thank you for contacting the Internal Revenue Service about the problem you reported on 02/02/25 11:40:51 when using Free File Fillable Forms. We regret any inconvenience this has caused you.
When tested, we had no issues creating or accessing accounts, previously created this year. We also tested account recovery. In short, it all works as expected. If you’re having problems, we suspect a browser / browser settings / operating system or device compatibility issue. This is a local, not a systemic, issue. We cannot diagnose local issues.
For more information refer to the Minimum Computer Requirements page. https://www.irs.gov/e-file-providers/mi ... able-forms
Is your browser’s pop-up blocker turned off? Do you have your autofill turned off, etc.?
· If you meet the minimum requirements, and recommended browser settings, try clearing your cache before you access the account again.
· The issue may also be your content blocking setting, having it set higher than “Standard” could cause the problem you are experiencing.
You may also try switching to a different recommended browser (Microsoft Edge or Chrome) or accessing your account from another computer.
If you continue to experience this issue, we recommend exploring our Guided Tax Software Options.

Wow! Thanks for the information. I wonder if I'll get a response. Unfortunately, I'm one of those guys who continues doing the same thing expecting different results. So now I've got 2 emails floating around in cyberspace and at least 2 attempts at creating a new account. I used a different computer and browser so there's 2 suggestions that didn't work.Stinky wrote: Thu Feb 06, 2025 8:59 amEven though I didn’t think my email to IRS went through, it appears that it did. I have the same issue where I am unable to CREATE AN ACCOUNT! Just goes back to the Start Free File Fillable Forms Page. Tried several different web browsers and nothing has seemed to work yet. I have also used it for 4 years now and this is the first time having the issue. Got the 404 page as well when sending a technical problem issue form I did however receive a different response on 2/5/2025 by email stating others were getting the same issue, however they do not have a specific fix at this time. Basically seems like now resolution as of yet. Glad to know someone else is having the issue though as well. Will post here as well.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
OP here.
I’ve officially given up on Free File Fillable Forms. Probably forever.
Last night, I was able to set up an account, load my data (about 15 sources of income between various 1099s mostly) into Free Tax USA, and calculate my federal and state tax liabilities that match to the dollar what I have in my personal tax spreadsheet. It took less than two hours in total.
Very easy to use. And federal filing is free, with state filing costing just $14.99.
This software may not work for everyone. But it definitely worked for me. And since it’s integrated, I didn’t need to double-enter all of those 1099s into FFFF and my state tax department online system.
Here’s the Forum thread that got me to consider Free Tax USA.

It sounds like there are a few others on this thread who are frustrated with FFFF. (I still can’t get in). Try another solution, like this one.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I appreciate everyone's input on this subject. I've not given up yet. I was able to push thru the "404" error and actually got a generic response saying message received. On another occasion, I recall seeing that they have acknowledged problems that some of us are having. It gives me hope that something may work someday. I've had a strange year with the IRS. My last quarter tax payment was never received. Something just seems off. If anyone has success with this after having problems, please post and I will do the same.- L

I was able to create an account and successfully submit my tax return today. No problems at all.

It’s been three weeks since I started this thread. I’ve tried to log into FFFF every few days and have never been able to get in.
It baffles me as to why there are a few of us that consistently can’t get into FFFF.
As I reported upthread, I gave up on FFFF after about 10 days of trying and filed using FreeTax USA. I like it, and find it a lot more intuitive than FFFF
To each his own, I guess.

I was able to create an account and completed our return - submitted in the afternoon and accepted the same evening.
Windows 10, Firefox 135.0.1 (64 bit)
I am not tech savvy so won't even attempt to offer any guesses/explanations. In prior years when FFFF didn't have all the forms that I needed, I've tried OLT and found it fairly easy to manage.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I have discovered the issue with the failed registrations, but thus far no solutions. There is a security window after submitting "create an account" that is unable to open preventing completion of registration. I had the idea to try setting up an account using my iPhone and that is where I saw the window appear for a split second, then disappear. Then the screen defaulted to the sign-up page as described.
Reading through the forum seeing the variation of computers and browsers that are all getting the same result, I doubt it is your computer or browser. This is likely the IRS website. [Unnecessary comment removed by admin LadyGeek] However, I am not a technical expert, and my suspicions are my own. As of Feb. 22, 2025 I have yet to find a solution. Please reply if you have.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
Just joined the forum to upvote a possible solution. I've been looking for others with this same issue for weeks (cannot log into FFFF). I have tried disabling popups, clearing history, etc. I have tried Firefox and Chrome on Windows 10, both completely up to date. No dice - every time, it returns me to the main page with no indication that it actually tried to do anything. I finally tried to create an account on my work computer (Mac) - which worked, and I was able to log in. I did not have time to work on the forms at the time, so I logged back out. This morning, I tried to log back in again on both computers (Windows and Mac, Chrome and Firefox on each), and I ran into the same issue. Any attempt to log in would send me back to the main screen. Tried removing security settings, clearing history, etc, and nothing worked.
Solution: I connected to the VPN network on my work computer, and immediately was able to log in to FFFF (I must have been connected the first time I tried to create an account). I do not know enough to know _why_ it requires a VPN for some people (I assume not everyone who has been able to connect has been on a VPN). To second the answer above, if you have access to a VPN, you may wish to try.Quietstormhb wrote: Fri Feb 07, 2025 9:42 pm Was just able to get in. Had to VPN using a Full Tunnel. Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
Try flushing your cache. Try using different browsers and different computers. Turn off popup and ad blockers.
Someone said they had success with a VPN. Try on your phone or create a hot spot with your phone and connect your computer to that.

I tried it by using my phone as a hot spot.
The good news - I was able to create an account! Yay!!
The bad news - When I logged into my new account, I couldn’t get past the screen that says “Start Free File Fillable Forms”. When I click on the Start FFFF box, it just takes me back to the sign-in screen.
So back to ground ZERO………

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I am using free fillable forms for the first time this year
I am on a MacBook with Safari. I’m having no difficulty. I created an account, and have logged in and out multiple times over the past couple of weeks.
I didn’t do anything special to my computer just what came out of the box.
Now I’m waiting on one last 1099, very frustrating. Because I’m curious to see whether it’ll actually let me e-file given all the problems everybody else has been having.

Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
As I mentioned earlier, I tried every combination of things to get this to go. I got very close. I asked my daughter, who uses a Mac, to create an account and it worked. I then asked her to create an account with my email/phone. It didn't work. When she tried to get back into her first account, it no longer works. As much as I've liked the FFFF approach, I'm worried that I may finally have success only to receive a failure to file notice from the IRS down the road. Life used to be so simple. Please keep posting ideas.

UPDATE
Weird.
I used FFTF this year. No problems creating account. Logging in and out several times over multiple weeks.
Just got my last 1099. Entered. Return efiled. No problems. Return accepted by IRS.
Out of the box Mac book, safari, no mods.

Based on all of the problems people are having, the direct file organization is probably such a hopeless obsolete mess that it needs to just be rebuilt from the ground up or even better discontinued since there are free private sector solutions.

This topic is about Free File Fillable Forms. IRS Direct File is a different product. At any rate, IRS Direct File is still working. Free File Fillable Forms allows people of any income to fill out the actual IRS forms without going through an interview process and electronically file their tax returns.brcarls wrote: Sun Mar 02, 2025 8:52 amPretty sure this thread was started before that action was taken.MrSteel wrote: Fri Feb 28, 2025 7:16 pm Use this, or some variation, in your preferred search method... Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
On a related note: I've used FFFF for years, and this year I owed about $500. I chose to have "them" (I assume the IRS or Treasury) debit my checking account. I can't recall which day I chose for them to debit it, and it doesn't seem like there is a way to view the account or date payment inputs that I used. Account has not been debited yet, and I'm unsure if/when it will be.
Anyone else experienced this? I guess I may have to cancel the payment by calling the Treasury as directed on the FFFF website if I can't figure something else out. Or make a separate payment.

People are having problems with a "free private sector solution." Free File Fillable Forms is operated by OLT.FullsideCoverman wrote: Mon Mar 03, 2025 1:21 am This topic is about Free File Fillable Forms. IRS Direct File is a different product. At any rate, IRS Direct File is still working. Free File Fillable Forms allows people of any income to fill out the actual IRS forms without going through an interview process and electronically file their tax returns.
Direct File is operated by the IRS. That's why it's called Direct File. You are filing your tax return directly with the IRS, not with a private company like OLT.
Re: Has anyone successfully logged into Free File Fillable forms for 2024 tax year?
I'm not able to create a new FFFF account for 2024, but last year I used FFFF and owed the IRS. The payment was charged to my account almost immediately. This year, my last quarterly payment was very slow getting posted (weeks). I'm not sure if the issues are related, but will be glad when this tax season is over.taurabora wrote: Wed Mar 12, 2025 9:20 am On a related note: I've used FFFF for years, and this year I owed about $500. It's in your account on "Step 2" tab.taurabora wrote: Wed Mar 12, 2025 9:20 am On a related note: I've used FFFF for years, and this year I owed about $500.
