H&R Block 2024 software offer

Post by LadyGeek »

It's that time again. I just received the H&R Block preorder promotional email. This year, I'm ambivalent on purchasing early or waiting for the Black Friday deals. The software will be released on or before November 13, 2024.

Deluxe - Federal + state (no backup CDs or extras) is $49.00 + tax. The offer expires November 3, 2024.

Here's a generic link from the email with all the tracking info removed:

Deluxe - Federal + State (Windows or Mac) - $49.00

Code: Select all

https://store.hrblock.com/shoppingcart/cart?pricegroupkey=A806279A&taxYear=2024&sku=Win_D2
Deluxe - Federal only (Windows or Mac) - $41.00

Code: Select all

https://store.hrblock.com/shoppingcart/cart?pricegroupkey=A806279A&taxYear=2024&sku=Win_D1
Heads up: You need to select "Remove" from the order summary or you'll get hit with a $5.99 extended download service charge. Or, remove it from the "You might also need" section.

Last year's thread is here: H&R Block 2023 software offer

On Amazon Black Friday hopefully for $25 again as 2023.
2019 was $20 and 2020-22 were $22.50

As big a reason as price is all versions are saved in my Amazon software library.
70/30 AA for life, Global market cap equity. Rebalance if fixed income <25% or >35%. Weighted ER< .10%. 5% of annual portfolio balance SWR, Proportional (to AA) withdrawals.

If you can wait a week or two after Black Friday, H&R historically has the lowest price in December and then again in early January. Last year was $17.99 for Deluxe plus State.

Sometimes it bundles the best price with a $20 gift card to the store of your choice, sometimes not. Look for these deals at Amazon and NewEgg.

There is no reason to pay over twice that price now for software that won’t be ready for a while anyway. I use last year’s version to calibrate this year’s end of year. There aren’t many changes in tax code so far except the normal IRA contribution adjustments etc.

There's also a stack with 20% back for using the prime visa card. (15% back on top of the normal 5%, advertised as 20%.)

The promo email price wasn't very enticing, so I've marked my calendar for Amazon Black Friday.

I usually do the HR Block plus one state (PA) for around $20/$25 but this year I am considering the IRS Direct file option since PA was added to the list. The PA state income tax form is very simple.

Here's the IRS free filing options: File your taxes for free | Internal Revenue Service

I'll have a 1099-MISC (other income), so I'll need to use the packaged software. Or, fill-in the forms manually.

I get Deluxe + state every year for $20. I have never bought it on black Friday. I go to BensBargains where I see it posted a few times per year.

Some people don't like online software, but fyi FTUSA ($15) and OLT ($10) both support 1099misc with state e-file included in the fee (always bugged me that hrb charged more for that, and mailing was a pain)

I'm going to skip it this year because I think Freetaxusa is better.

I was impressed it handled social security lump sum payments in a couple family returns that HRB had to punt on.

Also it supports detail statements and more open ended Other fields with explanations.

Last year, I used one of the free online programs, but I still bought a copy of H&R Block. The reason is that I find it useful during the year to project my tax for the following year. Yes, it's not 100 percent accurate, but it's close enough for my purpose. And, it allows me to see the effect of additional IRA withdrawals, fiddle around with withholding percentages, etc.

That's exactly what I do. I've given up on the Tax Withholding Estimator | Internal Revenue Service because it couldn't handle my pension correctly.

This is the first year that I won't be filing for anyone other than myself, so I'm more inclined to wait for a good deal.

Subscribing to this thread. I used HR Block the last few years because I needed the business edition and it was cheaper than TT.
My wife closed her S-Corp so I no longer need to do the S-Corp taxes (yeah). She opened a single owner LLC, so taxes should be easier, but I need to educate myself on which TT or HRB trim levels are right for that purpose.

It's not part of IRS Freefile, but OLT.com is free to use and free Fed efile for any income. State is $10. All the forms are supported but it doesn't import w2 and 1099s.

A 1099-misc will DQ you from using the free options? That's disappointing.

Then again, I've always just bought the software regardless...

The lack of 1099 import might be a dealbreaker if you have a lot of gain/loss transactions..

1099misc is fine with OLT, and they also don't charge you more for state efile

You can group these in total providing the cost basis was reported to IRS and there are no adjustments such as wash sales.

He does an amazing job for free. He calls his sheets "excel" but they work fine importing to google sheets. I use it to estimate my taxes, but I use OLT to file. I send him a few bucks.

Been using HRBlock for many years now and it has always been good.

Thanking everyone who in the past posted the prices for tax software. Amazon usually came out best but Newegg won last year.

Looking for updated prices once again.

I had a CP2000 notice this year from the IRS and H&R offered to help. I'd already responded by the time I called H&R so they asked for a copy of my response and said to call back if there was any issue from the IRS. The IRS finally agreed there was no issue so I never tested what H&R would do.

I found this interesting for those of us that save installers. My computer crashed SDD died. I was restoring things and back installing my block software. Going back in time all was fine till I hit 2018. Federal installed but the state would not. It said state was no longer available. I was also no longer able to open my return for that year because a state return was attached. I usually kept 7 years, but I guess now 5.

I always keep PDF versions of my returns for my records so that I'm not reliant on old software programs that might not work on newer software. After a few years, I won't need the ability to modify the old returns, anyways.

Amazon is in the midst of their Black Friday deal week. The current price is $49.00 - the same as the pre-order price in the first post. I just purchased the software. The price usually drops after I buy it, so this should clear the path for everyone else. :)

On Amazon, year after year after year it drops big on Black Friday and lasts thru that weekend.
And then for numerous little times WAY after that, but for very short windows.

Just be patient for a few more days and you will be rewarded.

"They sell the software and give out the license key to multiple buyers, ask me how I know... Do NOT buy from them, total scam artists."
Wow! thanks for pointing that out. I haven't ordered from them... I will probably hold out for my usual Newegg black friday deal.

I've used both Amazon and NewEgg over the years. with the Discover $15 coupon, it'll be Amazon this year.

Thanks for this, but this $15 credit doesn't work for digital orders.

The software download does not appear to be considered an ineligible digital order as the product page clearly says it's eligible.

Offer excludes certain Digital content and products, including but not limited to Alexa, Fire, and Kindle products/devices, Gift Cards, Cloud drive and paid subscriptions such as Prime, Kindle Unlimited, Free Time Unlimited, Comixology Unlimited and Personal Shopper services. •

I just purchased the software. The price usually drops after I buy it, so this should clear the path for everyone else. :)
lol, I feel this in the depths of my being

Thanks for your sacrifice. My past info suggests that Amazon will wait until actual Black Friday and then drop the price - we shall see.

Also the absolute lowest price is usually after Christmas Day, but the big drop is Black Friday itself

And then for numerous little times WAY after that, but for very short windows.

Just be patient for a few more days and you will be rewarded.

Here's the 2023 history.

Yes - worth waiting a few days. With the caveat that past performance is not a predictor, and all that.

Last year (2023), I paid $15.24 before tax for the Deluxe + State version on Nov. 27 (Cyber Monday) at Amazon.
Invoice states price was $24.99 - $9.75 promotion.
That price is one reason I switched from being a long-time user of TurboTax to H&R Block last year.

Useful info! Thanks Mnd and epoche!

I'm a slow learner! For years, I bought H&R Block in November as soon as I got the email...or as soon as the H&R block post showed up on Bogleheads.
My purpose was to run a trial return and withhold the correct amount from my RMD.
It took me too many years to learn that the latest version wasn't fully functioning until January; in other words, until January, it was a dud.
This year, I just ran my 2024 trial return on the 2023 software. My RMD along with my best guess at withholding is ready to go on Dec. 13.

Bottom Line: I'll bite when the price drops below $20. I set a price watch on CamelCamelCamel. Amazon's price is around $50 now.
If it all works out, how many basis points will we save?

Just checked.

Each year I am buying H&R Block Deluxe + Efile + State

What version is each of you buying?
