Securranty school computer insurance
Securranty school computer insurance
School is strongly suggesting each parent buy insurance on their kids Chromebook for $27 per year from Securranty.
If the computer breaks and it is not insured Securranty sets the repair price. This seems like a conflict and Securranty does not have a great rep online. Maximum cost is $300, which might just be a new chromebook
I don’t like to make waves at school but I don’t feel this is a good value.
I am guessing the forum thinks this insurance (most insurance of this type) is not worth it?

Did you purchase the Chromebook, or did the school provide it?massfish wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2024 1:04 pm School is strongly suggesting each parent buy insurance on their kids Chromebook for $27 per year from Securranty.

If you purchased it on your own, why would the school care if you insured it?

School provided it.
They used to repair chromebooks in house but don’t want to deal with it anymore so are outsourcing.

Do the students get a new chromebook? My point being how do you know you didn't get sort of a lemon.. and then 3 weeks later it is having issues..?
Re: Securranty school computer insurance
Good question. No way to know for sure but they seem to be new.
Supposedly, software failures are covered. The insurance covers damage caused by the student.

Re: Securranty school computer insurance
Seems like a money grab. It’s a calculated decision to provide all students with a personal device. Theres some assumption of risk.
I’d decline the insurance and self insure it.

Re: Securranty school computer insurance
Is it a 3-year or 4-year school? Are they expected to use the same chromebook from start to finish?
Is there a claim deductible? How many claims can they make?
Kids take the device home every night?
$27 sounds very reasonable if no deductible. Buy it or don't.

Re: Securranty school computer insurance
Remember, these types of insurance programs have to earn the company money. They have enough data to know that their average payout is going to be much less than $27.massfish wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2024 1:04 pm School is strongly suggesting each parent buy insurance on their kids Chromebook for $27 per year from Securranty.

However, you know your child. Do they take good care of things?
Re: Securranty school computer insurance
When I was working my employer provided laptop was insured by them. The school district is providing (mandating its use?) a Chromebook, then they cover all cost, imho.

Re: Securranty school computer insurance
Though I never take extended warranties myself, I would just pay the $27 and
just consider part of the cost of school. This would reduce drama with my child if
the chromebook breaks.
Just my take on it.
Opinion on the side:
Were I on the school board, I'd have been in favor of the school covering it if
the budget could handle it. The school is handing breakable items to children. Do
they charge a fee for books if they break?
I've always had enough money that $27 for my kid's education is not a
big issue, but that would not have been true when I was a kid, nor for some of the
kid's families of those my wife worked with. I situations like this that came up
when my oldest was in middle school, along with some other parents, we contributed
50% more to cover those who could not cover this extra cost.

When I was in high school (90s), you certainly were responsible for the cost of books if you returned them with more than normal wear and tear. You could even get detention if you didn't have book covers. (Grocery store paper bags were the best.)MathWizard wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2024 6:30 pm Do

They also kept a tab on stuff like broken test tubes, flasks, and microscope cover slips. I think the latter were $0.10 each.

Re: Securranty school computer insurance
$27 seems like a pretty low price to avoid Chromebook headaches for a year.
I'd just pay it and move on.

Pay the $27. Even if your student is careful with the Chromebook, it doesn't mean someone else won't abuse it. Class bully for example.

Re: Securranty school computer insurance
How old is your kid? My kid accidentally knocked hers off her desk last year in 1st grade and it broke the screen. Fortunately our school just covers the cost but something like that can easily happen with a bunch of kids and charging cords everywhere. I'd pay the $27 and be done with it.
Re: Securranty school computer insurance
I'd pay considering these computers are in the hands of kids. It's difficult enough for we adults to responsibly handle things. Extremely difficult to expect kids to do so.

+1
True story, grandson got into altercation with another student at school last semester. Came home with one side of his face all brused. Turned out the other student had smacked him in the face with his computer.
