What is your opinion on using Progressive for home, auto, and umbrella insurance?

I’m considering switching from GEICO to Progressive. Customer service is important to me, so it is not just about price. GEICO customer service has been excellent. What is your opinion or experience with Progressive for home, auto, or umbrella insurance?

I’ve had Progressive for a few years now (switched from USAA due to costs) and have been happy but haven’t had any claims.

I switched this year, and it's been fine. I saved $2500/year with Progressive over Geico for the same three kinds of policies. I haven't ever really needed much service, but everyone on the phone at both companies has been fine.

Been with Progressive for auto for many years. No claims, and no rate increases yet.

A Progressive customer hit me from behind with relatively minor bumper damage. Progressive took my car to a shop and did a good repair. However during this time, they damaged the engine. I could not drive the car home and it totaled the car. Progressive claimed no responsibility. It took a very long time with a lawyer involved to get a very small partial payment. So my experience with them during claims was very poor. Seeing Progressive commercials turns my stomach.

Amica or USAA get top reviews for a reason if you are not planning to have any claims go with the cheapest or self insure.

Progressive's offerings are a bit of a mismash. Home insurance is via a partnership with Homesite. It was with American Family until this month. Home policies are mostly integrated with the main Progressive website. Billings and claims are run through a separate website but they're linked via SSO so there's not another username and password to remember.

Umbrella insurance is a direct Progressive offering but there is a minimal web presence with the extent of information on the dashboard being an account number and a notice, "For help with your umbrella policy, give us a call. We're available Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 8 pm ET." At least my yearly call to pay the premium is efficiently handled.

The umbrella is handled through RLI, which I believe is a separate company. There is a web portal to access that, but it’s quite limited.

I’ve had auto with Progressive for years. Always happy with prices and customer service.

Last month, Nationwide hit me with a 40% renewal increase for homeowner’s. I quickly and easily got a quote through Progressive for the same coverage, for less than half of Nationwide’s price. Sounds good, sign me up. That’s when the customer service nightmare began.

I asked them to add my trust as an additional insured. Progressive agency asked me for trust docs. (Nationwide never did.) I sent them, heard nothing for a week. Contacted them for status, they asked for a copy of the deed. (Nationwide got it themselves online.) Sent it immediately, no response for two weeks. Contacted them again, they said the trust wasn’t on the deed. On hold with customer service for over an hour, finally they verified that the trust WAS on the deed. Told me the problem was that my husband and I have different last names. REALLY?! In 2024?!

Now I realized doing business with these clowns would be a nightmare. Asked to cancel. They sent me cancellation docs, I esigned, got confirmation, and waited two weeks. Contacted them again for refund status, they sent me a second set of cancellation docs. Another 10 days passed, they finally say they have mailed my refund. Never again doing business with the homeowner’s wing of Progressive!

I've had all three for the past five years. Their prices were the best when I switched. No issues with price increases, customer service or anything else, but like others on this thread I haven't had to file any claims.

I switched from
Statefarm - geico - progressive - back to Statefarm

Geico was the only one trying to increase the premium too much
Other were easy to work with including progressive
