Moving traditional IRA to 401K

Post by Bunty »

I made a contribution to traditional IRA last year for $6500. Since I had Rollover IRA as well, the total basis for 2023 and earlier years was calculated in form 8606 as 3570.

This year, I opened a solo 401K with fidelity and going to transfer entire Rollover IRA to Solo 401K.

I understand from Fidelity that I can also transfer my traditional IRA to 401K.

The current balance on this Traditional IRA account is $7284.

How much of this tranditional IRA should I transfer to 401K (pre-tax money)? I want to transfer the balance to Roth IRA. THis will allow a clean seperation between pre-tax and post-tax retirement funds. After this there will be zero balance in Rollover IRA and Traditional IRA.

Please guide.

THanks

Did you deduct that contribution when you filed? Did you convert any amount to Roth?

Had you made any non-deducted traditional contributions in previous years?

I did deduct 6500 last year when I filed the taxes. No, I did not covert any of that to Roth. I did convert some of the ROllover to Roth and therefore the tax basis in form 8606.

Based on that, it isn't clear why your basis for Form 8606 would be anything other than $0.

Can you list all your non-zero entries for your most recent form 8606?

Still need the answer to that question. If the answer is "no" then the Form 8606 entries (starting with line 2) are not correct.

Yes, made $6000 in non-deducted traditional contributions in 2022.
