Doing multiple jobs

Hi,
I have a full time job in a private software company. Recently, I became a permanent resident in US (green card). I know that I can take any other job or do another job concurrently. If I take up another job concurrently, I also know that its timing should not interest with my full time job and there should not be any conflict of interest. Are there other considerations? Am I legally bound to tell my current employer?
If you think that this is not the right forum, can you share some pointers where I can get sound advice?

Your employment contract may require you to inform your current employer or even ask their permission

Depends on the terms of your current employment. The job I had for thirty years would have allowed a second job. It would not have been practical for me but it was allowed. You did need to have the side gig approved to ensure no conflicts. My last couple of positions would likely have made the no conflicts including intellectual ones very hard to find that were also meaningful.

Many companies have this buried somewhere in the code of conduct or their offer letter to you. Especially when you do remote work. I think some states limit companies' rights to do so, but most do not. You need to understand though that if your employer finds out you´re most likely no longer employed and as you´re employed at will there´s very little to no protection at all for you.

I am not going to do anything rash or blatantly reckless. It is more of a side hustle but will likely be in software (or may be not).

Your current employer may well have a clause that gives them the intellectual rights to anything you do while employed. DH had to go through a review process for Megacorp to decide if they were interested in patenting his project or if they would release him for the purposes of that project.

Even without a formal policy, it is good practice to ask your employer. I worked for 2 employers who required notice and had vastly different reactions.

One allowed it so long as it was not doing work for a direct competitor.

The other did not allow any outside work. I worked as an engineer. If I told them I was working as a guitar instructor, they would fire me on the spot.

Most (all?) employers would not be pleased if your second job was with a competitor.

Depending on the job and responsibilities you might be required to be ably to respond 24/7 in some cases.
The surest way to know the future is when it becomes the past.

Be careful. If you are doing sw for current employer and also on your own, company may have a claim on anything you develop. If any of the company resources like say a laptop you take home are used for any part of your work, they don’t even need a clause in your employment docs to have a strong claim.
