metlife legal

Post by seanbaby »

Does anyone use metlife Legal (www.legalplans.com). This service is offered through my DW's employer. I'm wondering if it can be used for creating a simple will etc...? Thank you.

yep. we use it through my employee benefit. it is good, in northern Virgnia, at least. wills, a family trust, consultation about financial matters. covers a lot and we find it well worth the monthly expense.

We used it for one year to get a will, then didn't sign up after that. Worked well.

Yes. My wife’s employer (Emory University) offered it and we took advantage of it last year before she retired. We were very happy with the process and results.
The MetLife website lets you choose a lawyer that is convenient to you and specializes in the service you need.
We had both our wills re-written, POAs for both of us, and Advance Directives for Health Care.
Also had a Revocable Trust established.
These are not discount lawyers or anything, just an insurance plan that pays legal fees. Sort of like having a selection of lawyers on retainer.

Thank you. Are there any out of pocket expenses(deductibles) for these services you mentioned above?

If you’re creating a family trust presumably you expect to pay estate tax, in which case would that be appropriate?

Had it for years but dropped it this year due to a couple of <insert word> poor experiences... Forever ago it was a great experience. Full of gotchas now days - extra costs, x is not covered, y is only coved so far but the upsell is nuts. I was so discussed that I dropped it and will not likely pick up again forever at this point.

I am a network attorney with Metlife Legal Plans and I do estate planning. There are no tax planning services. If your estate is over $12 million ($24 million for a married couple) for federal inheritance tax, go with someone else. If you are in a state with state inheritance tax, consider other options. If you have a business (or a rental property), then MetLife would not cover that either. The fees are a lot lower than my other clients, but I get a decent volume of clients through Metlife. Overall, I think it is a win-win.

If you have a simple situation, it is a good choice. I have friends who use it to help with traffic tickets.
