TY2022 e-file delay (H&R Block)

Post by neilpilot »

On Sunday 3/5 at 2pm I used H&R Block Deluxe to e-file my TY2022 return. Immediately afterwards, I received the usual message that "your federal return was successfully transmitted". The message from H&R Block goes on to say that "the IRS accepts most returns in 6-8 hours, but may take up to 48 hours".

In previous years I've received an email confirmation of acceptance by the IRS within a few hours after filing. However, it's now been 4 days and I've received no communications, either of acceptance or rejection. When I open the software to check, the message simply shows "Pending" with no new info.

Have others e-filed using HRB recently and either had their return accepted or experienced a similar delay?

I did call HRB Customer Service yesterday. After spending considerable time on hold, I was told that there "maybe" a delay at the IRS's end and that I should expect to hear back by tomorrow. However, the CS rep gave me the impression that they were uncertain what was really causing my delay.

Edit: corrected date. My return (still pending as of mid-day 3/10) was e-filed on Sunday 3/5.

I haven't filed yet (HRB Deluxe). I normally get an ack in < 10 minutes on FED. Are there any substantive differences in what you filed this year versus last year?

Can you check your irs.gov account and see if there is any sign of your return there?

I'm having exactly the same experience with HR Block Deluxe; e-filed Sunday and still have a pending status. I've used HR Block for years and never had an issue. My return is substantially the same, nothing out of the ordinary so I can't think of a reason for the IRS to reject. I called HR Block yesterday and similarly they told me that it was a delay on the IRS side but I wasn't confident the customer service rep knew what she was talking about. I owe tax this year so don't know of a way to check via Where's my refund.

As long as you pay up by April 18, time doesn't matter. It can sit in queue for months and you are not at risk.

Appreciate your reply - so I'll wait until this weekend before I contemplate any further action.

I owe as well, and entered a 4/14/23 payment along with the e-file. I'm keen to know the filing has gone thru OK, since the end of next week we leaving for 3 weeks in Spain and won't be in a position to take corrective action while travelling.

Next year you might consider separating the payment action and doing that in EFTPS or Direct Pay rather than direct debit initiated by the tax return process. That way, the payment is not dependent on your return being processed.

I've been using EFTPS for over a decade. I schedule all my payments at one time -- amount due on return and four ES payments. EFTPS has never missed a debit date in all the years I've used it.

I just checked via the HRB site and this message is displayed: "Congratulations, your 2022 federal return is complete! As soon as the IRS begins accepting returns, we'll automatically file your return for you and update our systems once it's been transmitted.".

The above message is different from what the software shows. It implies that the IRS hasn't been accepting e-files returns since I transmitted my file on 8/4.

Interesting. I would think if the IRS hasn't been accepting returns there would be more chatter online about it?

The IRS is accepting returns. We filed several yesterday and they were all accepted.

Update: Received rejection this evening:

Problem: Your return was rejected because of a problem with our e-file process. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Solution: The problem has been identified and will be corrected in an update that will be available for download the end of the day on 3/13/2023 .
After you download and install the update, you can resubmit your return for e-file again.

I e-filed on HRB at the end of February and my return was accepted in a couple of hours. I had overpaid and split the refund, some for ACH and some to apply for next year. However it's been almost 2 weeks now and the IRS shows it only has having been received, not processed.

Appreciate your update. It would have made sense if my 4/5 efile was similarly rejected when I checked this morning. It's still pending.

Did you get an email about the rejection, or did it appear when you launched the software to check status?

Yes, I received an e-mail that the IRS had rejected the return.

I'm the OP that e-filed on 4/5. When I called HRB customer service on 4/9 I was told to expect it to resolve by 4/10.

Now, over a week later the return still shows as pending, with no new information since I filed on 4/5. I called HRB again just now, and CS seems to have no explanation why my return hasn't either gone thru or been rejected. All they offered is to escalate my issue to a higher level of their CS organization. So I'm told to expect to receive an email, but could not tell me how long before this happens.

Thanks for the recommendation on using EFTPS, I wasn't familiar with it.

Question, ....my wife's name/ss# is first on our tax return, should we set up the EFTPS account under her name and social? If it matters, her name being first goes back to when we first married and the first year we did taxes we used a tax service that put her first as she had the higher income. Now she is retired and I have all the W2 income, not sure if that plays a role in making payments? Thanks.

Doesn't matter but it can easily be set up in her name and will apply the amount to your return filed jointly regardless of your income

To the OP...neilpilot

I'm in the same boat as you. E-Filed on Sunday Mar 5th using HRB Deluxe software. Have been in "Pending" status since then.
Have spoken with 6 different people at HRB since the and got same answers you did...until today!

Here's the fix:
Call HRB support at 888-482-9288 (direct line to support for downloaded software products)
Tell them that your E-File is "hung up" on their end.
Tell them that you spoke with IRS and they never received your e-file.
They will reset your e-file and it will now show "rejected" by the IRS and your state.
You will also receive 2 emails confirming the IRS and state rejection.
Open up the HRB software, check status and read the "Rejection Report".
Mine said the following:
----------------------
Error 1 of 1
Rejection Code: FD-31-1013
Update and Resubmit Your Federal Return
Problem: Your return was rejected because of a problem with our e-file process. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Solution: The problem has been identified and will be corrected in an update that will be available for download the end of the day on 3/13/2023 . After you download and install the update, you can resubmit your return for e-file again.
Follow these steps to fix the issue:
1. Go to the Tools menu and choose Update The Program.
2. Follow the steps to download and install the update for the Federal 1040 program.
3. When the update has finished installing, review your return.
4. Once your review is complete, click Take Me To, scroll to Filing Your Returns, then click Go To.
5. Follow the steps to e-file your return again.
----------------------
I'm just waiting for the software update so I can resubmit my e-file.
Hope this helps!

Appreciate your detailed writeup, which coincides with other reports about an HRB bug preventing e-files submitted on or around 3/5 from going thru. I just got off the phone with HRB customer service (for the 4th time) and they assured me that they will reject my return. A few observations:

* Even though you and others have been told the update would occur yesterday, 3/13, I was told today to expect the update on 3/17.
* They said if I left my e-file pending rather than have it rejected, it would automatically go thru when the update occurs. However, I asked them to have it rejected because I'm not sure I trust the option of leaving it pending, especially because the morning of 3/17 I'm flying out of the country and don't return until early April.

Not much new to add other than confirm I had the same issue. March 5 e-file, hung up in Pending status until March 10th, got the same email sent automatically (I never called HRB to ask what was wrong).

Just waiting for the new update which appears to be 3/17 (not 3/13 as they indicated earlier) and hoping that it works this time.

**UPDATE**

Re-filed on 3/17 after the update and federal return was accepted in about 2 minutes. Looks like they have it fixed.

The 3/17 HRB update came out today.
I just ran the update and resubmitted my state and federal taxes.

My federal has already been accepted. Yay!

Good for you. Unfortunately I've called HRB Customer Service 5 times starting on 3/8. The last 2 times (on 3/14 & 3/15) I all but demanded that they reject my e-file that has been in Pending purgatory since 3/5. I have no idea why, while some here have been able to have their earlier pending e-files manually rejected, HRB says they will release mine but have not.

So today I also loaded the update into my HRB Deluxe, but it doesn't change the fact that my return remains Pending and I can't make any progress.

Edit: Just off the phone with CS, who now tells me my return will not be rejected until tomorrow. Unfortunately I leave the country early tomorrow, so may not be able to file before the 4/18 deadline. Of course, this maybe just the latest lie, and it won't even be rejected tomorrow.

Summary of past CS calls: On 3/8, told issue would resolve on 3/9. On 3/12, they escalated my case and had "no idea what the problem is". On 3/14, was told problem would resolve on 3/13 and my return would not be rejected, but go thru at that time. On 3/15, was told (and received email from CS) that my return would go thru today immediately following an update.

My return has been pending since 3-4-23 and I was told by hrb cs that all will be fixed with an update today. I updated the software last night and nothing has changed. Still in pending purgatory. Anyone get a different result today?

...sam...

UPDATE: A few hours after posting I received a notice that the return was rejected. I was able to resubmit and within minutes the Federal return was accepted. Looks like HRB has fixed their problem...

Well I also received an email indicating my e-file was rejected. Unfortunately rejection took 13 days after I e filed and it's a day too late for me. I just landed in Madrid and have no access to HRB software or my return for 3 weeks.

Filed my federal return with Block and it was received and accepted within 10 minutes. Can't file my state because 1 form is STILL not finalized. They say the state will be finalized on March 24.... since I always owe (by design) not really a issue.

Now I am worried. I filed this morning and it is still pending. Update: It is now accepted after 5 hours or so.
