How long did you wait for your tax refund this year?

Post by Foresight2020 »

Seems like we got our federal tax refund more quickly last year, about a week. How long did your refund take this year, e-filed of course.
Thanks.

Same. I think it was within the same week last year. 2 weeks and counting so far.

I just got all of my brokerage forms last week so I don't know how people have already filed their returns. Both Schwab and TD didn't have everything ready until the last week or so.

Depends what you mean by a refund. My k1 schedules never come on time for my tax attorney to complete my taxes, so when I got that profit and loss statement for 2021, because that investment was a loss for the year, I finally got my refund in November of 2022 after filing an addendum. I also got my property tax refund in September of 2022. As for my 1040, I haven't had a refund from both state and federal in over 3 years. For 2021 I owed close to 4k. This year I'm sure I'll owe around that much due to our rental property we sold in 2022, so we had income, but ended up selling early 2022 and paid 50k in capital gains, depreciation payback and state tax. I'm ready for a year where my taxes are more predictable.

4000 refund @ 4.5% interest for average of 9 months = $135.

Things were much different a couple of years ago.

The year a person gets married, if their spouse earns less than them and they file jointly, a refund will be mostly unavoidable.

For a good planner, it is always avoidable, isn't it? That is not me and I found the first downshift year very challenging. We certainly didn't need to meet safe harbor with half of the salary for much of the year. We were told to expect RSUs from an incompetent HR, so there were additional withholdings for a couple of months in expectation of that all being above the 22% bracket until we found out she was confused. Then we ended up doing some tax loss harvesting...just the $3k offset accounts for a large portion of what we overpaid, so I didn't do too bad given the constantly changing situation.

For the OP, it was 11 days to get the refund.

Fastest ever refund this year in 5 days. e-filed on 2/17, refund in my credit union on 2/22.
A bank would have had a hold for 2-3 days but still only 7-8 days..

HR can often be sloppy with these matters. For us, being able to tax gain harvest for the first time was huge. That definitely outweighed the opportunity cost of any overpayment.

I efiled with H&R Block software on 2/23/2023 and got "return accepted" the same day. IRS WheresMyRefund is currently showing "Refund approved" and
Your tax refund is scheduled to be sent to your bank by March 3, 2023.

If your refund is not credited to your account by March 8, 2023, check with your bank
to see if it has been received.
In the past refunds showed online on the next day after the promised date, so we will see, but I have confidence.

I am sorry I voluntarily signed up for the "IP PIN" program. I didn't understand it. It was a confusing nightmare this year. Once you have signed up, you are apparently in it for good, like it or not, and you must prove your identity each and every year. First there was a frantic search for my IP PIN, and then I freaked out when the IRS implied that I had entered it wrong. I didn't understand, and it didn't explain, that I do not have "an" IP PIN, that the one I found was only good for last year, and that I needed to request a fresh one this year. Fortunately I was able to do it using an IRS account I'd established a few years ago, and didn't need to deal with ID.ME or mailed PINs.

Because I don't get 4.5% interest. I get 0.01% (and I'm not interested - pun intended - in changing banks). That turns that nine months of interest on $4,000 into thirty cents. That being said, I almost always owe money so I won't do my taxes until April.

I can see that maybe being the case if they get married late in the year, and have had their withholdings taken out for the most part of the year aiming at meeting their single tax liability, and so when they do get married, they have already overshot their new joint tax liability.

Other than that, it is trivial to adjust withholdings to match their new joint tax liability. That that may not be high on their priority list is a separate matter.

Just under two weeks for federal, still waiting on state. After a couple back to back years with corporate relocations which really messed with things and had us cutting large checks, we played defense in case it would happen again. Naturally it didn’t, and a legacy holding that normally throws off $15k to $25k in distributions, threw off about $2200. So we had a large refund. Already redid the W4 to remove some of the extra withholding, and we don’t expect a relo this year (90% confidence). That should bring us really close to even this year, depending on distributions.

I'm still waiting for a form to become available on TurboTax, which is annoying. Fortunately, this is the last year I'll have to deal with this, so in future years I'll be able to file as soon as I get tax paperwork from my various accounts/mortgage lender/employer, etc.

Federal, 2 weeks. State, 1 day later. I just changed withholding on state to have nothing taken out as we've gotten everything back for the last three years because we're old, not because we have less income. I'm more leary of getting federal down to bare bones however as I'm trying to avoid filing estimated taxes. The refund is only around 1k anyway.

We've always had our taxes prepared, but I've caught mistakes at the 3 different firms we've used every year since we've moved here in 2019. I'd rather fix one mistake per year than four. I might have to capitulate and start using Turbotax.

Interesting - we had all our documents by the end of January. Regardless, the documents are just a standard way of showing the numbers - for most things you have access to the numbers you need and you don't really need the documents. I wouldn't recommend doing it for a complicated return, but it can be done. DW is a CPA and had our taxes done by mid-January, although she waited until we had the documents just to validate everything before submitting. I don't know the exact date she submitted, but we received our return on 2/10 (which was nice as she made partner in her firm last year which really threw off withholdings and such so it was a big return).

We had to pay in a decent chunk the year we got married. Mostly to pay back the big ACA subsidies my wife was getting prior to marriage that she certainly didn't qualify for once my income was included.

I prepare the tax returns for my ladyfriend. Hers are very easy because she is a single filer, no dependents, standard deduction, one job, no other income. She was due a $250 refund from the state because her payroll department bungled the withholding on her year-end bonus; otherwise, she either owes a tiny amount or is due a tiny refund (which we rolled into the next year because dealing with a $35 check is a nuisance while $70 a year later she likes having). We filed her return in early February (on paper) and she got her refund direct-deposited into her bank less than 3 weeks after I mailed it out from the PO. Very quick turnaround.

She owes $300 for federal, so she are in no hurry to pay it. Part of the plan included waiting for her state refund to arrive because she is basically sending it to the IRS. So whenever she feels like having me finalize her return, I will do it, probably near the end of March.

For a good planner, it is not always avoidable. When half of pay is in bonuses/RSUs and withheld at 22% (no choice), and you’ve set withholding of regular pay to zero. I haven’t seen a way to avoid a refund.

Virginia also drives me a bit crazy- the only factor in witholding is number of people. So we always get a refund due to itemizing. Have yet to figure out if increasing exemptions by pretending we have more kids is legal, so I haven’t tried it.

Six days for Federal via e-file. We have no state tax return.

Last year I e-filed on the day after the IRS started accepting online returns. The bank showed a pending deposit after two days.
