At what age did you reach your first $1 Million

Post by SmoothieJ »

At what age did your net worth reach $1 million? (July 20, 2013)

[Link formatted by admin LadyGeek]

I found this pole from 2003. Interested in restarting the thread, or posing the same question.

I am 46, wife at 43. We are at this milestone and just curious where we are compared to our peers.

At 35. However, a million is the new 100 grand with inflation.

The median networth for a person in their 40’s is somewhere between $127,000-164,000, according to this yahoo finance article. You’re leaps and bounds above your peers.

Peers should be based on more than just age alone. A couple which earns $75k a year and accumulates $1 million has a much tougher hurdle or rather a set of hurdles to cross compared to a couple which earns $100k+. Wouldn’t you agree?

These polls really don’t mean much.

Yes, that is accurate if you're comparing $1MM today vs $100k in 1952.

Wrote a check to myself and my wife that we would hit $600,000 at 30.

Really don't know why I picked that amount. We ended up hitting $1M at 30. That was 2020 before kids.

Now I invest aggressively for my kids futures, to be able to start more businesses, and to hopefully help out family down the road.

Instead of "peers", I should have said "Boglehead Peers".

And yes, everyone reaches the milestone with different size shovels. For me it is just to know where others are at...those who actually live by the Boglehead Way.

And, ultimately to form some perspective of where we are at and where we will perhaps be in the process as time goes on.

$1 million mark is so 2003. I’m interested to see $10 million mark.

Single here - hit first $1 MM at 39 in April 2019..

Hit $2 MM at 42 in October 2021.

My SO and I cohabitate but aren’t married - if you count both of us we hit $1 MM a long time ago, 2013 maybe at 33.

Maybe waiting for the funds to be available before cashing the check.

1 million (investments): Age 43, rode that for awhile until 2022 hit, then 1M again this year. I added 44k last year as well but in a standstill

Yes. $1 Million doesn't seem like much of a milestone. But $1 million still doubles a bit nicer than a lesser amount.

No competing on my part. Just perspective and reflection.

You already know where you are statistically without needing to ask here; I don't believe this could possibly be useful information to you. If the average Boglehead posts that they had an inflation-adjusted $1M at age 29, what does that mean to you?

Are we talking net worth or $1 million in retirement/savings?

I should hit a $1 million net worth by 44 but on the other hand $1 million in stocks I should hit by 49 at latest

I'm glad it worked, but I'm still very confused on the mechanics. How much was the check written for, and what did you do with it?

38 or 39... I can't remember. But I'm also at a standstill despite continued investing.

We just grind our teeth... and wait for the inevitable upswing. 👍

Something to keep us motivated, we wrote 30th birthdays in the memo line.

It wasn't a situation were we went and cashed an actual check.

At 30 we had reached a networth of more then a million.

No, around 3-4 million but have a good pension and wife still wants to work. Maybe could hit 10 if wife continues to accumulate and market takes off again. I don't have a desire to work for money; I'll work for good food, though. Like good, home cooked meals.

Here's a much longer thread from a couple of years ago.

viewtopic.php?t=328722

It's not in poll format because the moderators disabled the forum software's poll feature in the meantime.

In that thread, I note that I reached my first and so far only million at age 59. That was in nominal "then" dollars. In today's dollars it would have have been about four years earlier.

It's "IRMAA" (Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount), not "IIRMA" or "IRRMA" or "IRMMA".

Nice w*rk!

When I was 22 I said a goal that I would be making $100,000 a year and have a $500,000 net worth. Fast forward 10 years, and we paid off $150,000 in student loans, I made $300k+ in 2023, and have $1.3M in the portfolio, and no debt. In my mind, I still just have 1 million since inflation is so bad lol

I’ve got a feeling the next 10 years will not be as kind, but so thankful for the solid start. I think we reached 1 million for the first time in our portfolio around age 30 as well. Fairly recently.

It has really been quite the run since the 07/08 recession. Thats when we got started with indexing. Pretty much started with only what we began with years prior. I too am curious what the next several years will bring. Got a feeling it is going to be quite the grind.

These are great accomplishments to share. Maybe it will motivate someone else who is newer to investing.

I am a single person with no children.

Not counting my real estate and my pension ... my investments hit $1 million when I was 54.

I spent my 20s idling away in various graduate programs and didn't really start working until I was 30, so I think I did great!

On those terms, and in 2023 devalued dollars, it was age 46. But that was a while ago, pre-2008 and a lot of it did evaporate later.

The second million came a LOT faster. :beer The third took nine whole quarters!

At age 44, in 2019. Current age is 48 and net worth is now $1.6m. I’m a public school teacher and my wife (also 48 years old) is a stay-at-home parent. Pension and social security should fully cover our retirement expenses.

Thanks for reminding me, invest in yourself. Lots of student loans and hard work led to a high paying career. Starting during the GFC was no fun. Single earner btw.

Difficult to gauge the value of this thread.

Married couple pulling in 250k with zero kids worth 1million at age 40 ....

compared to a family of 5 with a net worth of one million at 40 pulling in 125 a year.

The first is great, but not impressive in my eyes when compared to a family raising children with the same net worth.

The optics are important.

That’s good stuff!

I took a bit longer, Army time and grad school took some years. Maxed IRA and started taxable while in Army, but not until after was I serious. Was probably 45 or so, but now, 12 years later, making up for lost time.

Yes. $1 Million doesn't seem like much of a milestone.
Only ~10% of Americans have a net worth of 1M or more. Took me almost 20 years to manage it for myself (41). A big milestone for me, but perhaps easier for others.

Median net worth for a 65 year old in the U.S. is around $168,000 which includes home equity.

Anyone who says $1 million is not much is out of touch.

When I was 33, I was newly divorced with a negative net worth and a big alimony payment. Fortunately, I had a good career. I remarried, we were frugal and saved as much as possible, put 3 kids through college, and 25 years later looked up at had a net worth approaching $2m in 2021. The last year has put a dent in it, but we are setting ourselves up to retire soon. So I don't know when we got to $1m, but I guess it was around 54 or 55.
