Anyone using custom domains or proton mail for financial accounts?

Post by ronin561 »

Looking to move away from google to a paid email service like proton mail which allows you to have custom domains setup or various @protonmail.com addresses.
Was curious if anyone uses something like that and had any issues such as just flat out not being accepted, or being flagged as spam, or locking out of accounts etc with financial accounts as a login using something other than the big players gmail/yahoo/outlook etc.

thx

I have been using Proton mail with a custom domain as my primary email for a year now and it's been working very well. I'm on the Mail Plus plan. So far, no issues being flagged as spam or not being accepted when setting up accounts.

I highly recommend using a custom domain as it has the advantage of being able to take it with you if you decide to change email providers, and avoids the need to update email addresses on all your accounts ever again.

Due to the encryption, Proton mail does require that you use their mobile app, not the native mail app on your device. Or you can access mail using a browser. On a computer, you can install the Proton bridge, and then access mail using you preferred mail client. This makes setup a little more difficult, but that's a one time thing, and then it works transparently.

Also, be sure that you understand and set up the account recovery and data recovery methods. Otherwise, all your email could be permanently lost.

I've used https://fastmail.com for my mail service for well over a decade now for DW and I, never used gmail, yahoo, etc (Ran my own mail services for my personal domain previous to that but got tired of the upkeep). They offer all the services you could want in a mail system, allowing you to register multiple domains on your account, create aliases, calendar services via webcal, etc.

I've never had a problem getting mail from Fidelity, Alliant, Ally, etc. As long as whatever mail service you choose has all the correct DNS Security settings and certificates in place, there shouldn't be an issue.

I buy a low cost Office 365 (might be called Microsoft 365). Business plan. I have a few domains and I use an custom email addy for each bank or service

I have about 20 or so email addresses. If I end a service or leave a bank i delete the email associated with it.

I also created rule that tags each email based on the header info (to what email it’s being sent to). Tagging allows me to quickly identify what services send to which email.

It sounds more complicated than it is. Plus I enjoy the tinkering.

I signed up for the plus plan but I wasn't going to use a custom domain and just use the 10 aliases for (banks@ bills@ personal@proton etc) and the simplelogin for noncritical sites like reddit and such. But now I may do so. In my rabbit hole searches i see multiple times protonmail extensions being blacklisted for whatever reason, hence me making this post about being wary to switch. Its one thing to get locked out of local bank and another beast if its online access only.
Mobile and desktop web is fine, I am not a big emailer, its 99% for various accounts, and 1% an email here and there.
Thx,.. (edit: I have the recovery options setup)

I was looking at fastmail as well but i had never heard of them before so was a bit nervous about moving all financial accts over to them on a whim. Will have to do more research on them. Since I mainly wanted the compartmentalization/organization of my diff accounts fastmail looks like the better option but I pulled the trigger on proton mailplus for a year for 40$ So will have to revisit when it is time to renew.

I have had my own custom domain since 1998ish. I'm currently using MXroute for my email services host. I've had very little trouble getting verification email alerts. Every once in a while a sender will have trouble when they don't process DNS records correctly and they try to email my web server instead of the mail server.

I use a custom domain and my emails are hosted by Fastmail. If you set the records correctly (or just let Fastmail set them if you are ok using their DNS), you probably won't have problems. I have experienced some occasions where the online registration tells me to use a real email address when I try to use an email at my domain. Ironically, those tend to be the places where I'm perfectly fine using a throwaway gmail address because those are the free-trial type services anyway.

if you do run a custom domain name, you do need to make sure that the account at the domain name registrar is properly secured. That’s the week link in a set up like this.

Note that your venue for disputes with Fastmail is in Australia, whereas with Microsoft, it is in the United States. Disclosure: I am both a Microsoft employee, and a Fastmail customer.

I have a couple domains through google domains with whois and locked that I can use and will prepay for a decade out with reminders. I will say, I have been playing around with fastmail for the past few hours and I am going to try to get protonmail refunded because this does everything I want and I am loving the interface. I am mainly looking for the organization and separation with aliases and masked with folder and filter rules. Will keep a gmail on the side just in case anything pops up..

Thx all

When I rain my domain mail on my own system, I had a few issues where my somewhat overzealous spam protection would reject important mail, because my credit union didn't always use vendors that did everything just so. But I haven't had (or haven't noticed!) that problem since I moved my mail to Fastmail when it became too hard to run my mail at home. I enjoy having my own domain, and it's nice to know you can switch providers if you need to, without having to change addresses everywhere (but you'd need to change once to get going), but one thing that sometimes comes up is if you've got a newer or at least unfamiliar top level domain, some sites won't accept them. ronin561.com would be fine, but if you got say ronin561.party, you might have trouble using it. Try to pick something that's easy to pronounce, easy to understand, and easy to spell.

I've used https://mailinabox.email for about the last eight years. It works great. The lead developer is very good at maintaining an open source package that is installable with just a few commands and does not require me to get into the weeds of all of the email protocols required for a modern mailserveer these days. Spam protection is excellent (better than the paid service my employer uses). I can highly recommend it if you are a bit handy with running your own linux system.

I have about 10 custom domains and host email for a few friends and family. Required maintenance time is approximately five minutes per month.
