Hi Bogleheads,
Thanks to information I've learned from the wonderful contributors on this site, I made a large payment to the IRS today to ensure that my refund will be over $5,000 so I can request the refund as IBonds (really, paper bonds). The website asks the reason for making the payment, and I selected "extension." Is that sufficient, or do I also need to file a Form 4868 (to request extension)?
Thank you for sharing your wisdom!

"No you don't need to file the form if you used Direct Pay. It's included in the Direct Pay extension."
Now, whether that's authoritative... I've never filed an extension form when I've already made extension payment. No problem so far

I did it for tax year 2020 with no Form 4868. Got my iBonds and no problems. I filed with TurboTax. TheFinance Buff.com has detailed instructions: https://thefinancebuff.com/overpay-taxe ... -tips.html
Re: Filing for a tax extension for IBonds refund
Unanswered question that I saw on the financebuff's comments that I had as well, is it possible to submit more than one 4868 payment? In my case I'd like to split the charge between two debit cards.
The IRS site says it's ok to submit 2 payments for this form (https://www.irs.gov/payments/frequency- ... ax-payment) and I've heard some people do this for estimated tax payments, but not sure how it works for Form 4868. Is it as simple as submitting the 4868 payment with two payment processors? Or is it like estimated and you can do it 2 times for each of the 3 processors so 6 in total?

6 total works fine (2 times per each of 3 processors).leland wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 6:01 pm Unanswered question that I saw on the financebuff's comments that I had as well, is it possible to submit more than one 4868 payment? In my case I'd like to split the charge between two debit cards.

Wondering the same. I thought the IRS limit for accepting extension payments was two per year. If they will credit more than two per year via multiple processors that would be great.
