CSP new offer: 100,000 bonus points

Post by teaman »

PSA: Chase has upped the bonus to 100,000 points (additional 25000 if redeemed for travel) for opening a Sapphire Preferred credit card. It was 80,000 points until recently.

This is an excellent offer. Most likely the best ever offered for Sapphire. A no brainer if you like travel rewards.

I've always wondered how these actually work. Like, let's say I normally buy plane tickets through Orbitz or Travelocity, or direct from the airline if they are not on those sites. Then how do I do it with Chase Points? Do they have their own version of Travelocity?

I'm currently working on the minimum spend on this, but signed up 2 months ago when the offer was 80K points. Still a good offer, but a little bummed this didn't come out before I applied for the old offer.

They do, although the values won't be the best. The CSP lets you redeem at 1.25 cents per point, the CSR at 1.5 cpp. The problem is that the Chase Travel Portal doesn't always have the best prices among travel sites, so the sometimes artificially inflated prices counter some of the benefits of those redemption values. The way the major travel bloggers tend to get the most value (>2 cpp) is by transferring points to travel partners. So for example, if you want to book a flight, you can transfer Chase points to an airline miles program and then book an award flight as if you had earned those loyalty miles through travel. The value of those redemptions varies wildly, and many of the best ones require some roundabout ways. A common one is that airlines partner with each other through various groups and deals, and they often have different point requirements, so the cheapest way to book an airline with points might be through another partner airline or program. These redemptions are somewhat complex and dependent on award flight availability, which can be hit or miss, so the points game is not nearly as easy in practice as the travel bloggers like to make it seem. It's definitely best for frequent leisure travelers with lots of flexibility (basically travel bloggers). It's not so great for your typical salaried office worker who tends to take vacations around busy holidays, because many award programs restrict award availability during those times. I'm running into this problem now, because I've been building up points throughout the pandemic, and I'm just starting to look at redemptions, but I really don't have the flexibility to take advantage of the good ones. The bonuses are still worth it even as cash back because they're so much bigger than the annual fees, but it's very likely for average people to hit a wall where they're just better off redeeming for cash back instead of those juicy travel awards.

In my experience, best transfer value is to Hyatt and Southwest. Southwest recently devalued points and Im sure they will continue to do so, but I really like the cancel-or-change-anytime-for-any-reason fully-refundable/gimmick-free/no-blackout-date points setup there.

Also just an FYI you cannot claim this offer if youve gotten any sapphire welcome bonus in the last 48 months.

Yes, just do not add each other as authorized users. You can claim all the household income to apply even though you are applying seperately.

You can and it could potentially be even better. My wife opened a Chase Sapphire Preferred account in October 2020 when the bonus was 80k points. Then, in April 2021, she used the mobile app for Chase to refer me for the same type of account. Using her referral link, I also applied for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. I'm currently working toward meeting the minimum spending requirement to also earn 80k points. Additionally, my wife earned 15k points for making the referral (those points recently posted to her account). I am not sure if referral points are available with the 100k bonus offer or not but they were available with the 80k offer.

By the way, it's important that you do not add each other as authorized users on one another's accounts and you can not have earned a Sapphire bonus (either on the Preferred or Reserve card) in the past 48 months and you can't currently have any Sapphire cards. If you do currently have a Sapphire card and it's been more than 48 months since you last earned a bonus, you should call Chase and either change the Sapphire card to another product such as Freedom Unlimited (no annual fee on that card) or just close the account. Then, wait a few days and apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

I thought 80k points plus 15k for my wife for the referral was fantastic (I also got a $50 grocery credit) but 100k points is ridiculously great.

I was thinking of getting a new travel rewards card. So I just signed up to get the 100,000 points. It said to expect my card in 3-5 business days. I’d love to have it in 7 days when I head off on my trip to Yosemite/Sequoia/King Canyon National Parks. Fingers crossed.

Anyone know if they are still waiving the 1st year annual fee if you apply in branch? They were a couple weeks ago, and I applied under the 80K offer. I would like to have my wife sign up for the same card now that it's 100k in points. Still a great deal if you have to pay the $95 for a year.

Nevermind - I saw the question was already answered. I'll try to have her sign up in branch soon!

I was bummed about the devalued points but honestly they still have the best rewards out there. DW and I have earned companion passes from all the SW credit card points we have. So each time we book a free flight with rewards points our two kids fly free as our companion. I'm not aware of any other airline that comes close to being that generous.

Additionally, since March of 2019 Southwest has been occasionally waiving the fare difference on flight changes. For example book a flight for $80 and then change to a $500 flight for free. You really have to be paying attention to take advantage though as they only do it for a short period and they don't advertise when it will happen. What other airline would waive the difference in fare like that?

If you are going to do this in a 2 player mode, you should wait until the referral link generates a 100k sign up bonus.
Presently, the Chase Preferred referral link generates a sign up of 80k.
In the past, it has taken Chase a couple of weeks to change the referral links to match the public offer.

Right now in store.. its 80k + 20k + first year fee waived + 50 grocery credit... on has to decide if the referral is better then the $150 (fee plus grocery) (the points are probably worth more but... its pretty close)

Presently, the Chase Preferred referral link generates a sign up of 80k.
In the past, it has taken Chase a couple of weeks to change the referral links to match the public offer.
Right now in store.. its 80k + 20k + first year fee waived + 50 grocery credit... on has to decide if the referral is better then the $150 (fee plus grocery) (the points are probably worth more but... its pretty close)

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/chase-sa ... nnual-fee/
I used Chase Ultimate Rewards to book travel on Southwest just last night and got a value of 1.75 cents per point. That would make 15k referral points worth around $260. Of course, you could do better or worse than the redemption rate I got but just thought I'd provide the data point. The best thing about using the referral, however, is that you don't need to go into a branch and talk with anyone and can instead just apply online in a few minutes. The time and hassle saved are worth something too.

However, if the current referral bonus is only 80k points, I think the best thing might be to wait until the referral bonus goes up to 100k or just go into the branch and get the higher bonus that way (a bird in hand and all that) even though it will require leaving the house.

Also, I just reread my earlier post (the one from a couple of days ago) and need to add one important note. If you do currently have a Sapphire card that is more than 48 months old and plan to close the account rather than change it to another product, make sure you don't leave a point balance in your account. Either transfer or use up the points first.

Does this bonus require you not to have a Chase Sapphire card for the last 5 years? I am probably close to having closed my CSR 5 years ago.

Edit: I see in the offer it says 48 months.

No, that is not a requirement. You just can’t currently have a Chase Sapphire card and can’t have gotten a bonus for a Sapphire account in the past 48 months.

So the date the bonus posted? I closed the account in July 2017 and it was open around a year. So I am guessing the bonus came Sept 2016. I'm guessing there is no way to check this if you don't have the statement. I have all the charges/payments in Quicken but not the bonuses recorded.

Yes, it’s based on when the bonus posted. You typically have 90 days to meet the minimum spending requirement to earn the bonus. If you closed it in July of 2017 and had it for about a year at the time, you very likely qualify for another bonus.

referrals are currently still 80k.. you might need to wait a bit.

On the CC churning sites people are reporting that the bank representatives are mystified as to why they are signing up in branch. They are directing them to sign up on line.
As it happens most of the time when playing the CC sign up game, it is YMMV.
Good luck

Pull your free annual credit report. It should list all history going back at least 10 years assuming the card had been closed in good standing. It should report when the card is opened. Add 3 months or 4 months to that start date, and that is likely to be the month the bonus posted.

I've always wondered how these actually work. Like, let's say I normally buy plane tickets through Orbitz or Travelocity, or direct from the airline if they are not on those sites. Then how do I do it with Chase Points? Do they have their own version of Travelocity?
They do, although the values won't be the best. The CSP lets you redeem at 1.25 cents per point, the CSR at 1.5 cpp. The problem is that the Chase Travel Portal doesn't always have the best prices among travel sites, so the sometimes artificially inflated prices counter some of the benefits of those redemption values.
They used to have their own portal, but now it's powered by Expedia, and the results I have seen have always matched. I've seen like a dollar difference than directly with the airline based on different rounding or something, but in my searches, I've seen the same inventory and pricing these days. I've probably booked 7 times through the Chase portal so not a ridiculous number, but a reasonable sample size. I've done it for hotels too. With pay yourself back now though, given that's the same redemption value, doing that instead now (although that's scheduled to end Sept 30, but maybe will be extended).

It's getting harder and harder to find killer redemptions with travel partners with the removal of award charts and the move to dynamic award pricing to align with cash fares....I used to be great at it, now it's really hard with the big ones like United. Something like Aer Lingus might offer better rates with their distance based award pricing but I only go to Ireland so much ....Hyatt is popular but I usually don't stay at those properties. I've only done that transfer once. I'm staying at more AirBnbs these days for leisure travel and perhaps Marriott for business, but Marriott transfer from Chase is poor value.

For European vacations from the East Coast and Chi, the best bang for your buck is to fly Iberia to Madrid off season in business class for 68k points round trip. From there, cheap flight to your desired end country. Chase offers Iberia, Aer Lingus and BA credit cards. My wife and I churn through these 3 cards every 2 years and pile up the avios points. Been doing this the last 6 years. We actually look forward to boarding the plane :D

This offer is top tier, especially if you apply in branch to get the annual fee waiver. It's worth at least $1,000. I don't consider this card a keeper long-term, however. Take the money and run.

You can redeem the points as statement credits for certain types of transactions (I think grocery) at the same rate as their travel portal.

Yes, I have done that redemption from CHI as well on my way to Morocco. Definitely a good one. Booked in premium economy while Iberia was also running a promotion. I think I got to Africa for like 36,500 avios roundtrip in a quasi premium cabin....(for me, at 6'3" it's all about legroom but I don't care much about the other stuff Business class gives you.) I just don't like to have layovers when I can get a direct flight....particularly with kids.

I avoid third party bookings typically too as it simply introduces an unnecessary middleman, but I've found the Chase customer service to be okay. When flights got cancelled due to COVID, I actually got my Chase points back faster than United refunded my miles booked directly with them (probably because United considered it a cash fares). I had done one way on each...So, for me, I wouldn't default to it in case of IRROPS but if I can get a "free" ticket using points at a decent redemption, it's worth the slightly added risk perhaps for a simple booking.

Is there a trick to booking business on Iberia?
I checked the site and picked some off peak dates and all that shows up is Economy and Premium Economy.
No mater what dates I pick it show Business class tickets are not available.
