Qualified Disaster Loss (Tax Form 4684) Question

Post by liverpool »

I suffered losses as a result of hurricane Isaias. The instructions for form 4684 are not very detailed, and make reference to losses of personal-use property as deductible. My losses from the storm are:

1) Tree fell on my a/c and destroyed it. I believe I can deduct for the a/c unit, but not clear whether I can deduct for the cost of cutting down the tree.
2) Power was out for a week, so medication that requires refrigeration was completely destroyed. Not clear whether the cost of the medication is deductible (amount is substantial, around $1k), since this is not technically personal-use property.
3) Refrigerator was damaged as a result of the power outage. I believe I can deduct the cost of this repair.

Appreciate thoughts from the group on the above from those in a similar situation this year of previously.
