Daughter did not receive $1200 stimulus check last year or this year

Post by corn18 »

I claimed my daughter as a dependent in 2019 while she was at college. She didn't receive a $1,200 stimulus check in 2020 because of this. She is now filing her taxes for 2020 and is trying to figure out how to claim the $1,200 stimulus check (she was not my dependent in 2020). She earned $10k so she owes no taxes. It is my understanding that she should still be able to claim and receive the $1200 for the stimulus. Is this correct? If so, how does she do that?

Thanks,

Corn

In her tax return she will need to file for the recovery rebate credit

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/recovery-rebate-credit

And TurboTax fully incorporates that form

If she could not be claimed as your dependent (whether you claim her or not), she should get the Recovery Rebate Credit on line 30 of Form 1040.

My D is in the same boat. I just checked Freetaxusa and they have it in their software, including the $600.

Thanks to your link, we discovered that that part of TurboTax online is not available until 1/28. So we should be good to go.

Your daughter is entitled to obtain payment for EIP 1 ($1,200) and EIP 2 ($600) that gets reconciled when she submits her income tax return for tax year 2020 which includes a total of $1,800 in RRC paid to her.

IRS decoder ring:
EIP Economic Impact Payment
RRC Recovery Rebate Credit

Yours is one of a number of situations where a change in some status (e.g., a dependent who is no longer dependent, a child is born in 2020, one's income suddenly drops in 2020) from 2019 to 2020 enabling payment of a credit which one may not have expected.
