Unpublished or Atypical Benefits from Fidelity?

Post by Cruise »

I was reading a thread concerning Fidelity, and one person mentioned an invitation to attend an "event" sponsored by Fidelity. This got me wondering what kinds of published or unpublished benefits that Fidelity customers have acquired in addition to expected services.

Some benefits that I have had as a part of Fidelity's Private Client Group:

-Financial Planning/Estimating Services (Access to both web simulations and personal services)
-Help to set up accounts and ACH for the purchaser of my business so that funds would be directly deposited in my account on a specific day of the month. (I financed the purchase)
-United miles for bringing over money from external account

Has anyone else been the beneficiary of unique or unpublished services?

Fidelity had an online "watch Boston Pops for the Holidays" event for folks using a Fidelity DAF. I didn't bother, but my spouse did. So maybe it wasn't Boston Pops, but some other Boston professional music group?

Not a private client and never will be, but I got lots of United miles for transferring shares of a Vanguard ETF over. I have made zero buys/sells in that account the entire time it has been at Fidelity, so those miles were 5 minutes of my time. I will never make any buys/sells in that account as all those shares will eventually get put in our Fidelity DAF.

I use the retirement planning tool and the Analysis tab.

I guess an unpublished benefit is that Fidelity has never ever tried to call me on the phone to my knowledge.

Interesting. I have a FDAF, but can't recall getting this invite. Was this pre-Christmas?

December 17th is when this took place, so yes.

Thanks. Perhaps they sent this only to those who had substantial amounts in their DAFs.

We try to keep ours zeroed-out ... it is just used as a conduit.

I got a mini-3 Musketeer and a stale Coke when I went to the office once, but other than that - nothing. No seminars. No concerts. I don't even get a phone call wanting me to use their managed accounts. Oh well.

Fidelity is the custodian for my employer's 401K accounts. They had an representative on-site about 3-4 times a week (pre-covid). The rep stationed themselves in the common areas, and people could walk by and ask just about any question -- review portfolios, fund/eft questions, retirement planning. Very helpful and convenient.

Interesting - so they don't charge the $100 minimum?

But to the question that was asked (but still related to DAF) - I have a friend who keeps investments and her DAF at Fido. When I asked her about the annual fee, she said - what annual fee? I speculated that it may be a benefit for the $$$ that she keeps there.

We’ve attended a number of seminars on a variety of investment and economic topics. A couple have included “heavy appetizers” No selling has been done at any of them.

Is the offer of united miles still active? When was the last time your took advantage of this? I'm pretty sure it used to be public and then got pulled when commissions went to zero

I've been PCG for 10+ years w/ now 10MM+ in non retirement accounts and as far as I can tell don't get much of value, don't even get free turbo tax anymore

Just spoke to my PCG rep. The currently available offer is $1000 for bringing over new accounts valued >$1M.

3-4 times a week? Or did you mean year? Per week seems like a lot.

That's too bad, I miss the UA miles bonus as I used to do it every year or whatever the min cycle time was. The $1K bonus is not as good as its taxable and less than their competitors:

On three occasions they let me use an office to work from while I was having disruptive home repairs done.

Hahaha, that last line mad me laugh. What the alternative? “This concert is only for you, so please wear headphones and place a privacy screen your monitor so no one else can hear or see the celebration.”

Prior to Covid my wife and I attended a few luncheons with some of the Fidelity people.

When I had my heart surgery they sent me flowers which I thought was nice. Don't know how they found out I was even in the hospital. :confused

Per week. It's a big company. There is a fidelity office in town, so there is some proximity.

Another unpublished benefit, but one that is just really in the spirit of good customer service:

Today I spoke with my Fidelity rep, and I needed to close one account and transfer the assets into a rollover IRA. He needed to connect me with a specialist, and believing it would take some time to get one on the phone, he offered to call me back after he connected with the specialist and briefed him. A few minutes later, I got the call and was handed off to the specialist.

The specialist then hand-held me to complete the form needed, basically making it a very easy process rather than me reading every line and wondering which box to check, etc. He told me that I really did not need a medallion guarantee as stated on the form, as Fidelity would waive this requirement during COVID. This saved me a lot of aggravation and risk to go into my local bank. The specialist then hand-held me with information about uploading the form through their secure message center rather than mailing a hard copy. Saved a trip to the post office.

Just excellent customer service.
