IRS go2 app and refund question

Post by capran »

We filed a joint paper return in early June (after receiving our stimulus check, (since 2019 income was higher than 2018). The IRS web site says do not call and expect delays. but installed the IRS go 2 app and entered my SS, filing status and expected refund, but it says info does not match. so carefully re-entered info even though I am sure of doing it correctly, but still says info doesn't match. It's only a little over $200 but would sure be nice to know they got my return and it's in the process, but if you can't call, what do do? Ideas??? and filed it long before they started messing with the postal service delivery.

They only recently started processing paper returns; millions were stacked up since February. Yours may simply be waiting in a warehouse somewhere. Whenever I send something to the IRS I always get POD so I know if they got it. Did you do this?

Just for reference I filed my return in early-mid march. I checked 4 days later with the certified mail tracking number and it was marked received. The paper filing instructions with HR block specified this, so that was great advice on their part, and cost was less than 3 bucks if i recall correctly (required a trip to post office)

Here's the kicker: The filing status on the IRS web site did not update until mid July due to Covid. It was basically as if they did not open my mail in the time between March and July. Once it was updated to processing in mid July, I got my return via electronic deposit within a week.

If you paper filed in June, then you're probably facing a delay in processing. I guess for me the lesson learned here was:
1) Always E file if possible. For me, it was not possible this year and of course, the first year I paper file, there was a huge delay in paper processing
2) When paper filing, always go for certified mail

e-filing is quite fast. I e-filed in early June. The return was accepted by the IRS within 8 minutes.

Totally agree with this. My issue was that the e filing software of HR block does not accept more than 4 state returns. The instructions say you have to paper file beyond the 4 line entry limit

You can e-file federal with HRB software and then paper file states. I've done this a couple of time due to some state doc requirement.

Wow. That is helpful to know. My taxes this year were more complicated as there were a number of unusual items, which I had never had to file before, including some S corp and partnership issues. I liquidated those before the end of the year, so going forward won't have that. I tried the 2 different numbers for the IRS and there is absolutely no option to wait on hold to talk to someone, so I guess I will just have to wait and hope they did receive my return OK. pretty piss poor "service" if you ask me.
