Auto Insurance question

Post by gasman » Fri May 22, 2020 8:06 pm

Adult child who lives out of state and maintains and will continue to maintain apartment out of state. Out of state driver's license. Doesn't own a vehicle. Has moved back for several months due to Corona virus concerns. Expect her to stay till fall maybe longer. We occasionally let her use our vehicles. Should we consider adding her to our insurance policy as a named insured since she will be with us for several months or can we expect her to be covered in this circumstance?

I would add her. Most policies have some vague language pertaining to regular use of the vehicle, without specifying exactly how often constitutes regular use. She might be covered and she might not be. I wouldn't want to give the insurance company a possible loophole to deny coverage if she lives with you.

Be safe and add her. Can't imagine it will add much and will give a huge peace of mind.

I’d go ahead and add her. Even though your insurance company would probably ultimately pay any liability claim against her if she caused an accident, you might have to deal with the hassle of contesting the company’s position that she wasn’t covered.
