How to use up $300 Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Credit

Post by Ron Ronnerson » Thu May 14, 2020 5:42 pm

I have the $300 travel credit still available on my Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card but all our travel plans have been cancelled for the time being. I’m not sure how to use up the credit. We hardly ever use Uber/Lyft, take public transportation, or pay for parking. I’m thinking of loading up FasTrak with $50; that should cover our tolls for a couple of years. Does anyone have other ideas?

I plan to cancel this card when the renewal date comes up in the fall. In case it matters, we live in the Bay Area and have a fair number of points accumulated with Chase Ultimate Rewards, Southwest, and United. Thanks for any suggestions.

Prepay for some travel? E.g., buy some airline tickets, get reimbursed, then cancel for travel credit that hopefully is valid long enough to be useful for actual travel. There might also be airlines or hotels that sell gift cards that qualify for reimbursement (homework: research this further).

I think I saw Marriott was selling gift cards for 20% off this week. I'm not sure if that would fall under travel or classified as something else.

In 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 I used the $300 dollar travel credit within the first three months. Now I'm in the 5th month of 2020, and I've used nothing. Not only that, I don't see myself spending even a nickel on travel for the rest of the year. I fear I am going to lose the $300. And, no, I am not going to buy gift cards. With my luck, I'll buy a gift card from an airline that will go out of business before I can use it. I suppose my best bet is to rent a car and go on a road trip.

In the past when I made a refundable hotel cancellation on Hotels.com using the CSR, the travel credit posted within days. When I later needed to cancel that reservation and received a refund from Hotels.com, the travel credit was not reversed. Not telling you what to do, just sharing my experience.

Note that the travel credit now goes by cardmember year, not necessarily calendar year.

Mine is still by calendar year because I was one of the original cardmembers of the CSR. Those who got the card after May 21, 2017 are on a cardmember year system.

I think there are some random ways to use it. For example, mass transit passes. Parking (sometimes?). EZPass (or other toll passes) can be prepaid with it, which is how I used my first years credit.

If you simply cancel your card, the points go away. You might get the regular Sapphire card with lower annual fee and different points/spend structure in order to keep your points active for the future.

Consider buying a plane ticket for someone else to use the credit.

By the way, the rental car idea is not bad. Rent a luxury car or sports car for $300 a day and enjoy it.

I don't have the CSR any more, but have you tried calling the customer service line? Call and tell them that due to Coronavirus you're unlikely to use the card benefits and you don't see the value in paying the annual fees. They might be willing to give you some discount to compensate.

Thanks for this reminder. We wouldn't cancel the card without either using or transferring the points first. I'm thinking of cancelling the card so I can go after the bonus again in a few years. We already have other Chase cards in our household and likely will pass on doing a product change as we just don't need so many cards from them. There have been times in the past where we opened new cards with Chase and they wanted to speak to us first in order to transfer part of our credit line from another card since we had too much credit with them.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I can't find a good way to use the credit, this might be worth a try.

You might be able to buy Southwest points which wouldn't expire to make use of the credit. I have the impression that Southwest is doing something along those lines right now. Some of the other airlines are doing that as well, but on the others you would be dependent on award seat availability when it came time to use them.

On the CSR topic, I did not see it mentioned in the thread but if your annual fee renews between April and July they should credit you $100. Mine renews in August, so I definitely plan to call and ask nicely if they can apply it to me as well when the time comes.

If by transfer you meant to an airline/hotel program, I would recommend against that given the uncertainty surrounding the travel industry right now. If you meant to a different card that earns Ultimate Rewards points (e.g. Freedom or Ink) that's a better idea.

I was thinking of transferring the points to my Chase Freedom card in early fall. Then, in late fall, my wife would apply for a Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (and earn a bonus in the process). She and I have both previously earned bonuses on both the Chase Sapphire Preferred as well as the Reserve cards. Her last bonus was on the Reserve in September or October of 2016 and that account will have been closed for three years when she reapplies. I believe that you have to wait for 4 years since the last bonus was received and not since the time the account was last open. Please correct me on this if I'm wrong as this detail is important. Once she has the Preferred card open, we would transfer the points from my Freedom card to her Preferred card. Hopefully, by then, we can think about travelling again. If it still looks bad for travelling, we may just cash out our Ultimate Reward Points (we have about 100k) but I'd really prefer not to go that route since it's not very good value.

Yes it’s 48 mos from when you received the bonus, I should’ve been clearer there.
