I grew up in a time when cash was not so common so I don’t like having a lot of liquid money around. But I did take out some money just in case the machines go down for some reason.

C. <$1000

This is normal for us. My primary use for cash these days is paying the barber.

Less than 1K. Not sure how cash would help at all right now.

I have cash at home as follows:
$730
€400
£100
~$500 in Czech kronas
Small amounts in other currencies.

I had these levels of cash for a long time, well before Covid-19. This is a part of my antifragility strategy.

Most of it in the form of pristine cash I hang onto for when I travel to undeveloped countries.

I meant to get a bit more cash recently to keep on hand, but every time I was going to the timing wasn't convenient (wasn't going straight home say, and didn't want to be carrying too much money on me). I suppose I could hit an ATM the next time I go out -- exact date/time tbd. Will see.

I just placed a Whole Foods order yesterday that is scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I liked that there was a place to enter a tip (which I did, even increased it above the default option). I liked even MORE that apparently one can "edit" the amount up to 24 hours after the delivery. Brilliant. I wish more places would do that!

All of this is to say that I feel less wary about not having loaded up on cash, as I figure I don't really want to be handling cash anyway, and it's also a helpful reminder to "physical / social distance".

Answer: C - less than $1000 -- that includes the euros I still have from a trip to Rome in January

Maybe $20? About a year's worth of expenses in cash in an e-fund.

While I don't see this as the type of emergency that will crash our banking system, I've never understood the rush to take out cash during a crisis. In a true critical emergency, it seems to be that bartering would become the default and cash would be useless.

<$1000 for kids selling cookies, school fundraisers. barber, system shutdown from storms, earthquakes, etc, to take to a casino for the slots ( never more than $100 gambled for each of us), very small purchases,

$20.

Serious question: what are the possible mechanisms by which corona will mean I won't be able to use a credit card or get cash from an ATM or bank teller, but will still be able to buy things like groceries? Can anyone convince me I should go take out cash?

The general problem with self-selecting polls is that the results only tell you only about those who chose to respond to the poll. They cannot be relied on as reflecting the broader will of the participants of this forum, nor can they give any clear insights into the question asked. With written answers (beyond the pointless "+1"), a reader at least has the opportunity to review the respondent's reasoning for his or her answer. In addition to the lack of utility of polls, they required a disproportionate amount of moderator effort and were usually in violation of our requirements that posts be both personal and actionable.
