Veracrypt not closing problem- Help

Post by advice789 » Mon Dec 02, 2019 12:29 pm

Hoping one of the PC gurus on bogglehead can help. As many suggested, have used VeraCrypt for a few years for file encryption...No problems until two months ago

I use a win10pc. I noticed that once a file is loaded, I am not able to dismount( close) the file. I hit the “dismount” button and VeraCrypt is “nonresponsive’ and goes into an endless loop. To shut down, I hit task manager and need to hit “end task” which is a hard shutdown. Prior to a few months ago, the ‘dismount’ icon on VeraCrypt worked fine. Any suggestions as I tried another VeraCrypt file and same problem, tried when connected and not connected to the net, etc and still , files will not close. Appreciate advice?

Last, if I cannot fix the problem, alternatives to Veracrypt are appreciated.

thanks

Did you Google this issue and read through threads on more technical sites? Lots of reports of this with various causes.

One suggestion on a thread was "Try to enable in Settings > Preferences "Force auto-dismount even if the volume contains open files or directories".

Another suggested the Malwarebytes was the issue (if you are running it). Another stated ....

There might be a number of system issues that could cause this.

Take time to search the issue from other users. I searched for "veracrypt dismount not responding".

Cheers

It sounds like something is still accessing files on your drive. I use veracrypt and it happens sometimes to me as well. I'd advise against force dismounting. Figure out what's still being accessed.

I dont know much about Veracrypt, but since you are on win10, you should consider turning on bitlocker. I have it running on all laptops and the "to go" version on all USB drives. works flawlessly for 3 years now.
full Drive encyption has become as common on modern machines as household plumbing. Both of which are very very nice!
BTW 1password has a cybermonday special on today. 50%off

Process Explorer might help figuring that out.

Appreciate all the feedback. Will google as noted.. Initially, I googled "veracrypt problems" but not "dismount". Will try that.. I am interested in bit locker but am using win 10 home and understand it is not an option on home version. Will also assess which programs using veracrypt that may prevent dismount

thanks to all
