IIRC, the HRB software does not know how to fill out form 1116. Right?
It's pretty straightforward to fill it out yourself using the software, IMO, as long as you read the instructions.

Ugh, after buying the software, when I try to select a state they say they don't support Part Year resident forms for Hawaii. So I guess I will have to manually figure out my HI taxes. Why wouldn't they disclose this prior to purchasing the software?

You can contact them directly for a refund (I've done it) if they say they support something but do not, or if it's within the return period, you can contact the seller.

There's no way of knowing if TurboTax supports it though.

For those like me that prefer the disc, Amazon has Deluxe+state for $22.50.

Well yeah, but if I get a HRB refund, I'd need to replace it with something.

FYI, for those who still need it H&R Block Deluxe + State dropped to $19.99 at Amazon today. That's the best price they've had on this year's edition.

Thanks for the heads up. This is the CD version. I don't need the state (PA has their own) but there are 5 free federal e-files ( I do my brother and sister's return too). Can't beleive I can do 3 federal e-files for $19.99. Am I missing something? In the past I've always used online versions of tax software.

And for last year's customers of HRB, today I got the CD in the mailbox with the $19.99 price to activate.
Too bad I already got it for $19.99 from Newegg on Black Friday as download.

Just to clarify, the download versions (for PC and Mac) are also $19.99, not just the disc version. You can select the download versions from that link.

Heads up for PA state tax filers:

I just tried - then stopped - my tax return e-file submissions. :annoyed Why? PA requires submission of 1099-R forms, regardless if you're receiving taxable compensation (retirement income is not taxed in PA).

H&R Block stopped my e-file because it was looking to upload an attachment- Wage Stmt Summary:Sec II Documents.

Going to the source, here's the official form and instructions: PA Schedule W-2S Instructions are on Page 3; which includes how to e-file, email, or mail the forms.

The H&R Block version simply put a summary of the 1099-R form totals as "TP MISC" for the Payer FEIN (Federal Employee ID Number) with a federal total, a blank line, then "SEE WKS" (See worksheet).

So, no 1099-R information was being e-filed with the return. The state return "Miscellaneous and Non-employee Compensation Worksheet" buries this little gem as:
IMPORTANT: You must submit a copy of each form and statement that you listed on this worksheet, whether or not the payer withheld any PA income tax.
I saved the 1099-R's federal worksheet as a separate PDF file. The software only allows a single file upload. So, put all the 1099-R's in one file.

The next PA state software update is scheduled for February 21, 2020 (also waiting for PA-40 ES), so I'll wait until the next update to file. I could e-file now then get the PA-40 ES forms later, but it's probably better to wait until I have all the forms.

The next Federal update is March 5th, 2020.

Tools --> Update The Program not only shows you when the next update will occur, but form status. Here's the links:

- Federal Form Updates for Tax Preparation Software
- State Form Updates for Tax Preparation Software

Update: Thinking harder, the state wants the actual form, not a tax software worksheet.
Update 1: I decided to file everything now.

For those whose spouse spouse passed away in 2019 (or 2020 before the return could be filed), e-filing is permitted for both Federal and PA state tax returns. It's called "Filing on behalf of a decedent". Some states don't permit e-filing, so double-check before proceeding.

From the H&R Block help:
E-filing on Behalf of a Person Who Died
There are special rules and procedures for e-filing returns on behalf of decedents.

* A return can be electronically filed for a deceased person only if they died during the tax year (January 1 to December 31) or during the tax processing year before the return could be filed.
See the H&R Block tax software help for additional details, as certain criteria must be met (OK for me).

PA state guidance: How do I file a PA income tax return for a deceased taxpayer?

Regardless if I'm permitted to do so, H&R Block does not support e-filing for PA state tax returns of deceased persons. OK, I'll save the $19.95 fee and mail it.
You can't e-file your Pennsylvania return this year because:

* This program does not support e-filing on behalf of a deceased taxpayer.
The software does support e-file for federal returns with a deceased person.

The background information sheet, section 2g, is where you enter the info "If this return is for a deceased person...".

Tip: Do not put the deceased person as a primary taxpayer.

Update: The "Print for filing" option didn't print the PA-40 V voucher needed with your check.

After I e-filed my return, I just realized that I filled out my itemized medical expenses incorrectly.

My late husband's nursing home required payment 30 days in advance, so I paid for January 2020 in December 2019 and itemized that expense in my 2019 return. Medical expenses cannot be included for a future year. Ref: Publication 502 (2019), Medical and Dental Expenses | Internal Revenue Service (What Expenses Can You Include This Year?)

To amend your return, go to the help center, search "form 1040-x" --> How do I amend my return?

1) The IRS will not accept Form 1040-X by e-file. Paper it is, then.
2) H&R Block will not have the final Form 1040-X available until 3/5/2020.

The instructions were clear to follow. I just need to wait until the final form is available and mail it in.

In its current format, Form 1040-X has "Draft Form - Do Not File" all over it. Also, the form doesn't contain the corrected amount I have to pay the IRS. The state return won't be affected, as PA does not allow federal itemized deductions. See: Deductions and Credits
