Here's the pricing history of H&R Block 2018 on Amazon for the past 12 months. As several people have said, around Black Friday.

It's a website, not an app.

I poked around a bit last year and could not find a way to report the bug I ran into (which I mentioned earlier).

I reported a bug via their online chat, and they didn't fix it with the next 2 updates, so I just experimented and found a way to work around it (changed a value from 0 to 1 in my case)
Thanks guys and especially Keven and Naylor511. My discussion with Chat was pretty underwhelming. I was told that the problem "might" be fixed in their January update. This doesn't build confidence. I usually file on January 15, and my 4th quarter payment reflects this. My concern with HRB is now twofold: There is no reasonable official channel to report a problem that they should be aware of and get it triaged and tracked. Next, this information was known to everybody but HRB over a year ago when the IRS published the caps; the Chat rep stated, "it isn't a bug, the IRS hasn't released the forms yet."

Things go wrong, I get that. How a company fixes a problem (or not) and how confident I am that they will fix a problem timely, weighs heavily on whether I wish to continue to do business with them. Appreciate the insight folks!

Is TurboTax any better at this? I don't recall ever trying to report a bug in my many years of using TT, before I switched over to HRB a few years ago.

HRB and TT and everyone else are going off the same IRS forms I imagine. I wouldn't worry just yet, it's still really early. At least the desktop version let's you work around *some*issues, the online versions do not.

Avei: I have been on FB chat with H&R Block. Perhaps you can reach them there and write down the problems you experienced. But first connect with them on FB.

Camelcamelcamel only tracks Amazon prices. When the link was originally posted on October 30th, the 2019 version was not available on Amazon, so it was given as an example of how the price changes over time.

As of November 6th, Amazon does now sell the 2019 version, here is its tracker: https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B07YH24MYL

I am amused that the 2019 Amazon version of H&R Block Deluxe software carries an option for a 4% refund bonus if the refund is taken in the form of Amazon gift cards.

Years ago, I remember seeing 10% bonus refund offers on tax software, which were worth considering. But 4%? I am better off just taking any refund as cash and just using one of several credits that gives me 5% (or more) cash back on Amazon purchases. My BoA Cash Rewards gives me 5.25% on all online shopping, I have two different co-branded Amazon credit cards (one from Chase, one from Synchrony) that give me 5% cash back, and this quarter I also have two Discover cards that give me 5% cash back.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant for me this year. I am not actually expecting a refund. Probably will have a small balance due.

But back in the heydays of 10% refund bonuses, I remember threads on this forum where people were talking about deliberating overpaying their fourth quarter estimates to generate refunds that they could then take in the form of gift cards with bonuses.

The 2018 version link remains useful to give an idea of the kinds of promotional variable pricing patterns that have prevailed in the past and may well continue in the future. (It is too early to see any patterns in the 2019 version.

So Amazon are selling H&R Block Deluxe (federal) at $34.99 (for any of Mac download/PC download/PC+Mac CD). Admittedly they do have the 4% offer.

But Walmart has it at $24.97 (seems to be their base price, as in they're not showing this as a discounted price).

(But last year Amazon did drop it to 19.99 for Black Friday.)

It is tax filing software. H and r is one of the many vendors. If it imports, then I don't have to pay for the h& r block.

The import feature is implemented by each vendor. If you choose TurboTax or H&R Block from Free File, it will import from most common places. In general TurboTax imports from more places than H&R Block because it has a larger market share.

Huh, so did the deluxe federal-only version ever go cheaper than $19, or do they just make federal+state same price as federal?

Looks like federal only was $10 if you count a $5 gift card, but, I don't really keep up with the federal only deals because I need state. https://slickdeals.net/f/12908020-h-r-b ... SiteSearch

As I recall, pretty much for the same reasons that others switched. 1. Vanguard stopped offering it for free, and HRB was less expensive, especially when you get one of the good deals (I'm hoping for Friday). 2. HRB offers free audit support, while TT charges extra for it. 3. I didn't like the way TT switched things up from year to year.

Other than these points, they're not that much different.

My reasons for switching were pretty much the same as Kevin´s, but in addition the proximate triggering cause the year I switched was that I encountered a really annoying bug in TT that directly affected me and prevented me from efiling (but was sufficiently obscure, arcane, and unlikely to affect many other folks so that I doubted anyone would bother doing anything about it if I took the trouble to report it), so when I saw a good deal on Block pop up on BH, I decided to get it and kick the tires. The bug did not exist in Block, and I have been a happy camper with Block since then. That was in Jan 2015 (if I recall correctly) so this will be my sixth year with Block.

This is my 3rd year with H&R Block. So far, I'm happy with it.

I may have a change in my tax situation this year, so I completed my 2019 taxes to model what might happen. I had no problems whatsoever completing the return up to the point of filing. The only downside is that the state tax form (PA) won't be ready until January.

I could have done this on a spreadsheet, but a tax return has too many moving parts and I wanted to be sure of what I'm doing. Not to mention the insight gleaned by working with tax software.

Totally agree that tax rules these days are sufficiently complex and interconnecting to lend themselves to easy modeling on a spreadsheet. (Once upon a time, back in the 1980s, before tax software existed, the tax rules were simple enough to model on a spreadsheet. I remember doing exactly that back then and coming out very close to exactly right. The only (minor) discrepancies came from discontinuities in the cumbersome tax tables.

But way too much going on now to feel confident with spreadsheet results to fine tune end of year decision making.

Good to hear that Block 2019 has been functioning for LadyGeek´s needs, hoping to snap up a better deal on Friday and check it out for myself.

I recommend setting a price watch for $20.

Actually, there are VITA sites that offer facilitated self assistance (FSA), where you use DIY software provided by VITA installed on computers at kiosks at their site and you have the option to do any modeling you want. There are trained volunteers available to provide advice and answer questions but they will also leave you to do your own thing if you prefer. So you could certainly model there. Income ceiling of $54K, same as traditional VITA.

In addition, there is a free DIY version of HR Block software called My Free Taxes made available through VITA sites that will do your federal & state taxes for free. You can use that anywhere. Income ceiling for this is $66K.

Both of the above options allow you to use tax code provisions that would be out of scope for VITA.

That said, there are very few VITA sites open year round. Most will not open until late January or early February, which is too late for making most fine-tuning end of year decisions.

Edited to add: of course, you could also volunteer to become a trained VITA volunteer, in which case you would get immediate access now to the practice version of the 2019 software that will be used live when filing season opens. The practice version lets you do everything except efile. (State software will not be available until January though.)

H&R Block 2019 Deluxe + State is $25 at Amazon and Walmart on Thanksgiving morning. Time to pull the trigger or wait for the $20 deal?
25 is about the standard price after release -I am in no hurry, so I will wait. I also want the disc version.

Also, Deluxe Federal only download for Mac or PC is $14.97 at Amazon now. Just grabbed the Mac version.
That's tempting but that excludes not only state e-file, but the state return itself?

Admittedly my state return is vastly simpler but it's still annoying to have to re-enter data and risk new errors. For me that's probably worth $10, perhaps even if I had to print and mail the state.

Right, no state support at all. Not needed in Florida!

Yes, down to $24.97 for Deluxe, fed+state, the question is: is that the bottom before sales end?

Ugh, I have to do my state taxes for the first time this year. We don't have an income tax, but dividend and capital gains are taxed if they exceed a certain threshold. My taxable account is large enough that I've exceeded the $1250 exemption for the first time this year. It doesn't look like a very complicated form, but I'm thinking an extra $10 to get the Fed+State version is probably worth it to avoid having to download the state form, figure it out, fill it in by hand, and mail the check.

The good news is that the dividend tax sunsets after 2020, so I'll only have to do this for two years unless they pass something new.

Thank you for sharing. In my opinion one can not go wrong with Turbo Tax or H&R Block. Recently we used a new tax product (recommended on the forum) last year and it worked out really well - Free Tax USA. Free Federal preparation and e-filing. One would only pay for any state filings.

You don't say what state, but I'm in TN and we have a similar tax. The return is so simple that it's a waste to use software. Our state allows you to access the forms, complete and file online without a paper return.

After I put this in my shopping cart and visited the checkout page, Amazon offered me a net price of 21.97, subtracting two dollars for a mysterious and unexpected ¨Amazon Day reward¨ plus another dollar off for an expected reward (Amazon credit toward electronic purchases from a prior ¨no rush shipping¨ election).

After seeing this and factoring in the 5.25% cash back reward on online purchases, I decided to pull the trigger and buy today.

I think that's your accumulated discount for not using the 2-day/next-day shipping from Amazon Prime.

Yes, TN is correct. Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I needed to know. None of my friends or family have ever been affected by the Hall tax, so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. I guess I'll save the $10 and just stick to the Federal only version if it's that simple to do online. I think the bill for the Hall Tax will only be about $15, so that almost pays for it. :D

Also check your state and local websites. Our state has an online portal where we can log in and file directly online for free. Our local tax authority offers the same. Therefore I use Free Tax USA for federal filings purposes only.

The one dollar off was my expected accumulated discount for not using 2-day shipping. The additional two dollar Amazon Day reward seems to be something else altogether. I think it might have something to do with the fact that Thursday (today) is listed on my account as being my personal Amazon Day. This is kind of mysterious as my personal Amazon Day used to be Tuesday.

Whatever...I just reviewed my six year order history for purchasing Block Deluxe + State. This is my second lowest price. Last year I scored $18 on Friday after Thanksgiving. All the other years I paid something in the twenties. My third lowest price ever was close to what I paid today ($21.99 on the 2014 product which I purchased in early Jan 2015.)

Happy enough with today´s price, leaving my all time record from last year intact.
