Just ordered the download of the H&R Block Federal package from Amazon. $14. Don't need the state return since I live in a no tax state, and it was the best deal I have seen, so I'll have it ready to go when we return from our winter travels.

dodecahedron wrote: Thu Nov 28, 2019 9:57 am The one dollar off was my expected accumulated discount for not using 2-day shipping. The additional two dollar Amazon Day reward seems to be something else altogether. I think it might have something to do with the fact that Thursday (today) is listed on my account as being my personal Amazon Day. This is kind of mysterious as my personal Amazon Day used to be Tuesday.

Whatever...I just reviewed my six year order history for purchasing Block Deluxe + State. This is my second lowest price. Last year I scored $18 on Friday after Thanksgiving. All the other years I paid something in the twenties. My third lowest price ever was close to what I paid today ($21.99 on the 2014 product which I purchased in early Jan 2015.)

Happy enough with today´s price, leaving my all time record from last year intact.
Paid $18.17 last year (Fed + State) at Walmart.com.
Paid $19.99 the year before from Amazon.

My final price was $21.97 as charged by Amazon. (I will get 5.25% of that as cash back credit card rebate, which brings me down to $20.82 net of credit card rebate.)

(NYS sales tax of 8% omitted from the above to make it comparable to folks in other states. Including tax, I was charged $23.73 and after credit card rebate that will work out to $22.48.)

Good enough for me.

Looks like I would be well served switching from Turbo to H&R.

Which version of the H&R is best for someone with both 1099 and w-2 income? We also sold some mutual funds this year.

Happy Turkey day to all my fellow BH!

If by 1099 you mean you need Schedule C, then you need the Premium edition. If not, you still need Deluxe with stock transactions I believe.

Encouraging folks to buy more than needed is part of their marketing strategy. It should be noted that I am only talking about the download versions of their product line.

(Folks who insist on using the online product may well need the Premium. The online product lets you start out for free but then continually upsells you at various decision points.)

If you buy the download product, you are all set with all forms and schedules included.

Interesting possibility and you might well be right. I am a Prime member. If you are not Prime, you have a cheap (free) way to find out. Amazon has 30 day free trial memberships available.

Grrrr...
Then they should state Amazon Prime members pricing vs. rest of us. I might do the free trial but had one a few years ago, so wonder if I'm excluded from trying again.
I'm waiting for Monday or sooner, and will snap up when it gets under $20.

Confirmed, that's 2 years in a row. :)

OTOH, my 2019 tax situation may change and I wanted to model this situation as quickly as possible. If I need to make any changes, I'll have enough time to take care of it. I'll test my patience again next year.

Lousy deal for many of us... Why take a 4% bonus amazon gift card when you can get 5% cashback from amazon by charging your purchases to a credit card?

I went ahead and ordered the Deluxe Federal only download from Amazon for $14.99. Something like $16.50 with sales tax. It may be a few $ cheaper at some point, but I'm happy with that price. I can go ahead and run some simulations this weekend and see if I need to make any adjustments to my withholding before the December paycheck.

So if I messed up and get a refund rather than owing the Fed a few dollars this is the consolation prize?

Actually, there are VITA sites that offer facilitated self assistance (FSA), where you use DIY software provided by VITA installed on computers at kiosks at their site and you have the option to do any modeling you want. There are trained volunteers available to provide advice and answer questions but they will also leave you to do your own thing if you prefer. So you could certainly model there. Income ceiling of $54K, same as traditional VITA.

In addition, there is a free DIY version of HR Block software called My Free Taxes made available through VITA sites that will do your federal & state taxes for free. You can use that anywhere. Income ceiling for this is $66K.

Both of the above options allow you to use tax code provisions that would be out of scope for VITA.

That said, there are very few VITA sites open year round. Most will not open until late January or early February, which is too late for making most fine-tuning end of year decisions.

Edited to add: of course, you could also volunteer to become a trained VITA volunteer, in which case you would get immediate access now to the practice version of the 2019 software that will be used live when filing season opens. The practice version lets you do everything except efile. (State software will not be available until January though.)
VITA volunteer here. I know I can file for free with Tax Slayer (their software) but that would require an advanced certificate volunteer to approve and efile. Also my income is higher than what it should be to utilize the free filing, so I won't ask them to give me an exception. Unethical thing for me to ask for.

You not only get to pay for the software to prepare the extra state, you pay to e-file the extra state too.

Looks like last year I paid $18 from Amazon on the 23rd. I suppose there could be a better deal than today's on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

VITA site coordinator here. For a variety of reasons, I do not use the software for preparing my own personal tax return. I prefer to pay for and use a downloadable version of retail software.

That said, my understanding from IRS official sources is that it is acceptable for VITA and TCE volunteers to the use the software for their own personal returns, regardless of income. (By the way, TCE sites do not have an income limit.) All the volunteers working under my supervision are students with incomes well below the VITA filing limit, so it is a moot issue at my site.

That said, I don´t think it would be at all unethical for a volunteer to use the *practice* (training) version of the software for any scenarios that interest them including advance modeling their own tax situations as nalor511 indicated they were interested in doing.

Advance modeling is a legitimate way to practice and prepare yourself for the upcoming filing season by familiarizing yourself with the ins and outs of the most recent version of the software you will be using to prepare other people´s returns. And modeling/practice/training does not require a quality reviewer since the training version of the software does not produce a fileable tax return.

Edited to add: of course, you could also volunteer to become a trained VITA volunteer, in which case you would get immediate access now to the practice version of the 2019 software that will be used live when filing season opens. The practice version lets you do everything except efile. (State software will not be available until January though.)
All your points are correct, including free access to TaxSlayer at any time.

VITA volunteer here. I know I can file for free with Tax Slayer (their software) but that would require an advanced certificate volunteer to approve and efile. Also my income is higher than what it should be to utilize the free filing, so I won't ask them to give me an exception. Unethical thing for me to ask for.

I didn't know before that IRS allow volunteers to file regardless of the income. Would you please share why wouldn't you use TaxSlayer and instead by your own software?

You asked: “Why wouldn't you use TaxSlayer and instead by your own software?”

Well, I don’t want so many curious eyes looking at my tax returns as I value my privacy.

You guys getting into such detail about VITA and other software... getting a bit off topic, 'eh? I keep thinking there's been a development about this deal... nope.

Thanks for the heads up. I used H&R software last year so for only $25, I could not pass up this offer. Sure if might get a few $ cheaper but I'm happy at this price for sure.

Newegg just emailed a Black Friday only sale with the two offers with State below (download or CD) for $19.95. I will wait until later in the year in hopes to get a lower price, but this is a good deal for those who want the software sooner.

These both show up as $44.99 for me. It looks like you may have to be on their targeted email marketing list to be eligible to enter a promo code.

The promo codes are valid only on Black Friday (Pacific time). I tried a fake email address a few minutes before midnight Pacific when the clock turned from Thursday to Friday, but the checkout page said the promo code was not active yet. A few minutes into Friday Pacific, the promo code worked OK even with that fake email address, but Newegg requires adding the address to their email distribution list. If you purchase, you should use your real email address to receive purchase and shipping info. It should work OK now, but only until midnight Friday (Pacific time))

Insomnia enabled me to be up and check this. The code worked for me, though I received no targeted marketing. The deal is $25 off, so 44.99 - 25 = 19.99 final price. Add state tax and grand total was $21.24.

Close enough to the cheapest price I'm likely to get to suit me.

Hello dodecahedron or any other H&R Block Schedule C users,

I understand that Deluxe has the Schedule C form, but I'm willing to pay for the extra hand holding of a more expensive version, if needed. On this page it says:

The comparison table shows only Premium or Premium & Business have:"Advanced Schedule C guidance to maximize deductions for self-employment income"
https://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/de ... -software/

Do anyone know how this compares to the Deluxe Interview process for the Schedule C section?

Thanks. :beer The first (download) code worked for me to buy the Deluxe + State Mac - Download as well at the $19.95 price. I already had an account, so I just logged in first and the code worked.

Thanks, I already had an account so these codes worked well for me. Almost paid $25 on Amazon but saved myself an additional $5.

Thank you! I took up the Newegg offer. Paid $19.99 through Paypal/ChaseFreedomCC (offers 5% cashback this quarter), no taxes in GA. It took about 15 minutes for Newegg to generate the code and provide a download link. Software installed fine and registration code was accepted.

Try another browser? Maybe check the checkbox to receive email offers?

https://secure.newegg.com/NewMyAccount/ ... ation.aspx

I think Amazon will probably match the offer.
