I went online and transferred all my holdings in the Sapphire account to my regular Chase checking account. I also did online secure messaging and requested that the Sapphire account be closed. I was notified that it will take one business day for Chase to do anything. I will post here once I find out how this goes. I have some concern about the account having to be open for 6 months but I did not see anything about that in the terms and conditions.

Today I received a secure message informing me that the Sapphire account has been closed. So this process appears to work just fine.

For those with any experience with doing this, what is the best/easiest way to close the account?
Downgrade it to the basic checking account which has a $1500 minimum, pull out all money except $1500, then call, secure message, or go to a branch to the close the account and they'll give you the rest as a check.

I had upgraded my chase accounts to sapphire checking (and premier savings). The banker told me that I can downgrade my account back to regular checking after the bonus is received. But I am planning to open YouInvest account to make my 75k earn some interest or dividends or gains..

Chase is actually offering a 3-month CD with a 1.65% pa interest rate.

Does it count towards 75k balance? I am not sure if CDs count...

I had opened the regular chase checking and savings accounts and received bonus around 6 months ago. I was planning to close my account since it’s 6 months already. Now I am thinking of either upgrading it to sapphire to get $1000 bonus or close current account and opening new sapphire account.
My question is - will I be able to get bonus if I upgrade it open new account? Will I be denied the bonus because I had received bonus already for my current checking account in the last 6 months?

Thanks.
My understanding is that upgrade works. It is best to talk to your banker.
Thanks student..

I think you are right, I just checked the conditions, it says qualifying new money or securities to a combination of eligible checking, savings, and/or investment accounts (excludes any J.P. Morgan retirement accounts and CDs).

For those who are opening the account. Be careful, they charged me $25 even those I have more than $75,000 in my YouInvest account. I called and they refunded the money.

If they refunded it and didn’t link your YouInvest with your sapphire account, you’ll be charged again next month. In my case this was something I had to do personally at the bank. Needed to link both YouInvest and business accounts.

For those concerned about Chase taking back the $1,000 bonus after closing the checking account (if held open for less than 6 months), couldn’t one simply transfer all funds (including the bonus) out of the account to zero it out and then close it? They wouldn’t have the bonus available to take back.

I compiled a list of the NTF Vanguard mutual funds from the YouInvest website, here it is (current as of last week): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nfT9Pj ... sp=sharing

You can also send a secure message on the Chase website or call them, they can easily link the YouInvest and Sapphire checking accounts and send confirmation. Takes them just a few minutes. That ensures no service fees on Sapphire checking with the $75K YouInvest balance.

Is there any downside to linking accounts? I wonder why they don't do it automatically.

I had the same issue, and mine was definitely linked. They refunded the $25 and I was not subsequently charged. I'm guessing this had to do with the delay between upgrading to Sapphire, and funding the $75k minimum.

I received my bonus, but have not yet downgraded. Waiting to hear if others had any bonus clawback issues soon after the 90-day period ended.

To establish my first Chase checking account ONLINE without going into a branch, which credit bureau(s) do I need to contact to thaw my frozen credit?

Chase has said that they don't need a freeze lifted, they do a soft pull. You may want to confirm that with their customer service folks.

Because of this mixed up, I called them last night to make sure they have it on record that I have met the $75k min. Multiple transfers and lost of connections. Three phone calls and no answer to my question. So I went to the branch and talked to the manager. He said he will look into it. I am waiting for his reply. I told him that if I do not get the money in April, I will be back to talk to him.

Chase Sapphire Banking/YouInvest

Post by justsomeguy2018 » Tue Feb 25, 2020 5:48 pm

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek]

Has anyone ever used this?

They are offering a $1,000 sign-up bonus after transferring in $75k.

I am wondering if it is worth it to grab the bonus, then either (a) shift the money out and close the account or (b) if the money stays in the account, does anyone know if there is a Core Money Market/Relatively Safe fund that the money can sit in with their YouInvest that will earn decent interest? This would replace an FDIC insured Money Market fund.

YouInvest has several Vanguard money market funds with no transaction fees, including VMFXX (Vanguard Federal Money Market), VMMXX (Vanguard Prime Money Market) and VUSXX (Vanguard Treasury Money Market). Here's a list of their no transaction fee Vanguard funds: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nfT9Pj ... sp=sharing

Those are just the Vanguard funds they offer, they offer many more no transaction fee funds from other fund families.

The mechanics of transferring $75k to Chase, getting $1000 bonus, using YouInvest, and opening/closing accounts are well covered in another thread that already has 119 comments:

I received my $1,000 a few weeks ago. I downgraded my checking account and closed YouInvest. Next I opened
a Sapphire checking/YouInvest account for my wife and transferred in the $75,000. In 90 days we will have another $1,000. Great deal, especially with the funds parked in Vanguard's MMF.

Got in snail mail today. I have a emergency fund Ally no penalty cd up in October for 75k and was thinking of shifting it. Does chase have any decent yields to put our emergency fund? Will this be a simple 1000 bonus? Not looking for a headache. Thanks!

Has anyone tried to stack a few of the Chase Banking offers - and what happens if you convert account type before bonus posts? See my scenario.

January 9th - Opened Total Checking ($300 bonus) and Savings ($200) plus $100 bonus for doing both. Deposited all needed funds and setup DD.
January 28 - $300 bonus posts for Total Checking
April 14 - the $200 bonus should post for savings (90 days) and $100 combo bonus

I wanted to upgrade my Total Checking to Sapphire Banking for the $1000 bonus. Banker wasn't sure and suggested I wait until April 14th when the savings bonus posted to ensure I got the extra $100.

Feb 27 - I was inpatient and ended up opening a new Sapphire account with the $1000 bonus. Still waiting for stocks to transfer over to YouInvest so I have not started the 90 day waiting (should be this week - Chase sent SM ack transfer request).

My question... I want to upgrade to CPC.

Does anyone know if I upgrade to CPC prior to the Sapphire $1000 bonus posting if I will miss out on the bonus? I would prefer to upgrade to CPC prior to June (90 days from now) on when the Sapphire bonus should post. Or will the bonus still post since the account was first opened as a new Sapphire account with $75k+ before being upgraded to CPC?

I am not concerned about the CPC upgrade bonus, I will not be using Chase managed brokerage services. The local bankers have no idea if the bonus will post if I upgrade to CPC early and again suggested I wait. Wanted to see if anyone on BH did this first hand and can reference their experience.

Has anyone got any updates on their Sapphire account bonus?

1. I was told that the overall balance (checking+savings+investment account in YouInvest) count towards the 75k balance limit. I moved my money from sapphire checking to VUSXX fund in YouInvest. This should be fine right?

2. $25 monthly fine is not supposed to be imposed for such accounts (they said the same when I opened the account). but saw a $25 debit towards monthly fee today. going to talk to them about it.

Thanks,

The $1,000 bonus is for adding 75k in new money and keeping it there for 90 days. Did you add new money or just move from account to account?

Are your accounts linked? Apparently, accounts that are not linked don't count.

Best is to talk to them about the entire situation.

Thanks Seasonal. I did the following steps:
- Upgraded existing regular checking account to Sapphire (They also converted my savings into premier savings) at my local branch. They said the offer is applicable in my scenario.
- Moved 75k+ from another bank into Sapphire Checking account (the one upgraded from regular checking)
- Then opened the You Invest account
- Moved 75k from Sapphire checking into You Invest account. Bought VUSXX MM fund.
- It's almost a month since I upgraded my account and moved new money.

- 2 weeks ago - had my accounts linked together in my local branch
- Earlier this week, sent a message to Chase and they replied saying all my accounts (Sapphire checking, premier saving and investment accounts) are linked together.

Does everything look OK so far? I am assuming that I will be eligible if I continue my accounts this way for 2 more months (a total of 90 days since the money addition), I should be receiving my bonus. Please let me know if I am missing anything.

It looks fine to me, but I only know the general terms and what I've read in this thread. I'd check with Chase by phone or secure message.

Good luck!

2. $25 monthly fine is not supposed to be imposed for such accounts (they said the same when I opened the account). but saw a $25 debit towards monthly fee today. going to talk to them about it.

Thanks,
invstar
They dinged me once for the $25, but credited it back in short order upon question/complaint at the sapphire CS phone #. The errant account fee was not repeated in the subsequent monthly statement. I am still short of 90 days since bringing the $75k from outside sources.
I think a CS rep from either the YouInvest or banking side should be able to tell you whether the box is (still) checked showing that net new money has a) reached the $75k threshold and b) not subsequently slipped below as a result of account net flows.

They credited back $25 into my account too after I sent them a secure message. I had deposited 75k on Feb 19 and then moved it to You Invest on Feb 24. But their response says the following. Any idea why they said the average daily balance was $42,843.77?

our records show that your average daily qualifying deposit and investment balance for your March 16, 2020 statement was $42,843.77. We charged the Monthly Service Fee because your account didn't meet the requirement for us to waive it.

As a valued customer, we're giving you a $25 courtesy refund for the fee we charged you on March 16, 2020.

Please be informed that a Chase Sapphire(SM) Checking has a $25 Monthly Service Fee. We'll waive it each monthly statement period when you have an average beginning day balance of $75,000 or more in any combination of this account and linked qualifying deposits(1) or investments(2).

I suggest bringing this into a branch. I ran into this same issue, when I questioned the charge they gave me an average daily balance that was clearly incorrect, and they only offered a partial "courtesy" fee credit. It was weird because it clearly did account partially for my You Invest account but not fully. I think there's a bug in their system, and/or perhaps somehow the calculation of the You Invest balance uses a different time frame that causes the error. Anyway, I printed a chart showing my You Invest had not dropped below $75K in that entire period (this was all taxable, not IRAs which I don't believe count toward the requirement) and brought it to a branch, and someone there got it fixed and the fee reversed. I never had an issue after that.

Thanks 02nz. I will try to call my local branch account manager and check with him. Did you complete 90 days and receive the bonus yet?

I did receive the bonus - but this was about a year ago, very similar offer but it was 60K UR points instead of $1000. I went into the branch with a printed chart showing my You Invest balance over time, so it was clear I met the threshold.

I agree that it is good to bring it to the attention of a branch. The branch manager told me that they do not charge the fee for the first two cycles so that people have time to transfer money into the account.

Completed 90 days.

Closed Sapphire checking, followed by transferring YouInvest assets. Was charged $75 account transfer fee - hopefully to be credited by Merril Edge as receiving firm. Once dividends post, will zero out account and close.

The manager came through and the bonus was deposited. I will give a history here so readers do not have to look at my past posts. I upgraded my checking account to sapphire checking in early January in a branch with a branch manager. (His actually title is probably AVP, private client, I do not remember.) I was given directions in how to open a YouInvest account. I opened this account and quickly transferred $1,000 to it. I then received an email letting me know that I needed $74,000 more to meet the requirement. I went to transfer mutual fund shares from Vanguard via electronic transfer. However I only see Vanguard Brokerage listed. I called YouInvest and the CS representative asked me to try and if it doesn't work, then I have to fill out a form. I received an email saying that it did not work and I was asked to call them. I did and I was told that Vanguard did not accept electronic signature, and I should fill out the transfer form and upload it. I was glad that I was not asked to mail it. The transfer was done quickly. Since I did not receive an email acknowledging meeting the $75,000 minimum, I called Chase and the CS representative talked to YouInvest and assured me everything is fine. Since I got a $25 fee on my sapphire account in February. I called and the CS representative said there was a linking issue but she refunded the money. Because of this mixed up, I called them again to make sure they have it on record that I have met the $75k min. Multiple transfers and lost of connections. Three phone calls and no answer to my question. So I went to the branch and talked to the manager. He said he would look into it and told me later that he fixed it. One week after the deadline, no $1000. I called the manager again and he said he would look into it. I got a response from him saying that they have fixed it. I received the bonus yesterday. I think talking to the branch manager helped.

My followup note is that Chase Bank paid my bonus on around day 91 after taking them up on the offer by upgrading the checking account.
It was also about day 82 (not 90+) after new money added (in my case to YouInvest) first cleared the $75k bar. While I don't think this was baiting a trap, neither am I inclined to draw down before day 90.

ofckrupke,
Thanks for the update. Good to know. I had done the same thing as you did - upgraded my normal checking account to Sapphire checking on around Feb 15th and deposited money into Sapphire checking on 02/19 and then moved it to YouInvest on 02/24 and maintaining it there (I had it in VUSXX initially and moved it to VMSXX on 04/01). So I can expect my bonus amount to be available by around 16h May. Does it look OK? Are there any things I need to take care to make sure that there will not be any issue? Thanks.

I think it is good. You have to make sure that your Sapphire checking and YouInvest are linked. Based on my experience, if there is an issue, your bank manager will fix it for you. I posted my experience earlier.

student, Thanks. Yeah, I had read your posts before. I had my accounts linked on around 03/01 and later sent a message to chase asking if they were linked or not as there is no way for me to check it online. They replied on 03/10 saying my accounts were linked together (please see below):

"Thank you for contacting Chase. It will be my pleasure to assist you with your concern regarding your request to link the accounts.
As you have previously requested, these accounts have been linked.
Unfortunately there is no way to view that your accounts have been linked together."

One way you can tell whether they are linked is whether they charge you the $25 monthly fee for your checking account.

Last month on the 16th they had charged me $25 and refunded it after I sent them a message on the 19th March. They haven't charged anything this month.
