Marcus Bank 1% Bonus for New Funds up to $50k ($500 bonus)

Post by bmr12 » Thu Jul 18, 2019 12:59 pm

Very similar to what Ally did last fall. 1% bonus on new funds in an account up to $50k per person ($500 bonus).

Looks like a tasty bonus for those who keep huge piles of cash lying around.

Does anyone know if I need to release my Chex and other credit reporting blocks to open a new account with Marcus?
I stick with Ally since I didn't have to do it originally and been with them ever since.
But this is a tasty treat for sure.

Thanks for sharing. In for the easy $500. I never got around to investing the $100k I used for the Ally, I have had most of it sitting in the Treasury Money Market fund.

Thanks for sharing!

Anyone have advice on best way to transfer money from Vanguard to Marcus? I’m wondering if Vanguard will link a new Marcus account quickly enough to push the funds. Alternatively, I could write a check from a Vanguard money market fund and mail to Marcus. Thanks.

Too bad all my cash is already in there - now I know how all the Ally account holders felt when that bonus came out :)

So after tax, it'd be $330 max... Still a good deal if one is okay with moving money around for 3 months.

I'm assuming the bonus is in addition to the regular APY, yes?

FYI - Just called Marcus and the money must be kept in their online savings account. They will not allow transfers to a higher yielding CD at Marcus and still qualify for the bonus (which Ally permitted). I am thinking about it...

I did Ally $1000 bonus earlier this year then got capital one $500 money market bonus then Marcus $100 bonus and now I am enrolled into this $500 bonus. I am also currently enrolled in etrade $250 and chase you invest $200 bonuses. These all are easy ways to make some profit by just moving around cash.

Just withdraw, and redeposit. I would/will "launder" it through a 3rd bank so they don't get suspicious.

Good point. Unlike the Ally offer - this one has the following conditions:
How do I qualify?
To qualify for the 1% cash bonus, you must:

Enroll in this offer.
Deposit at least $1,000 in new funds (internal transfers won’t count) into a Marcus Online Savings Account within 10 business days from enrollment. Multiple deposits may be made during this time and can be made by any owner on the account. Funds deposited in your account prior to enrollment are not eligible for the cash bonus. Your balance at the end of your enrollment period is your “Enrollment Account Balance”.
Maintain your Enrollment Account Balance through 11:59 PM EST of the 90th day following the enrollment period (the “Maintenance Period”).
Sounds like if I withdraw - wait 24 hours for transfer - THEN ENROLL - I will be eligible to put the money back and get the bonus. Worth a shot - all I have to lose is a few days interest.

The tax man gave a giant tax cut to Goldman Sachs, so this is just a small payback!

A nice thing about credit card rewards/signup bonuses is that, unlike bank account promos, they are not considered interest nor reported on 1099 forms.

FYI, Doctor of Credit keeps a list of best banking bonuses. Most of them are much better than this one IMO as they don't require you to move $50K around!

Can you make multiple deposits within the time frame (July 15, 2019 – July 29, 2019) that they allow as an existing customer? For example, can I deposit 10K today and then 40K tomorrow and receive the $500?

It doesn't seem like the time frame is different for existing vs new customers. The Jul 15-29 period is for enrollment; once enrolled you have 10 business days to make the deposits. So you can enroll as late as Jul 29 and have until Aug 12 to make the deposits. Tell me if I'm reading that wrong.

You seem correct. If you wait until July 29th to enroll you have 10 business days to add funds.

My understanding is that as long as you are already signed up, you are good. But if you have not signed up, Marcus could remove the bonus offer link.

Simple denied my application. This right after I opened an account with Marcus without any issues. Does anyone know whether this is because I have my credit reports frozen? I called them and they told me that they don't pull credit reports, but this is very strange - it has never happened to me. Below is the message I received online:

"We’re sorry to let you know that your Simple application was not approved. For security and regulatory purposes, we can’t tell you the specific reason."

I could try unfreezing the credit report and applying again but it would be helpful if they at least had told me what bureau they use. It starts to become too many hoops for $250.

Seemed like worthwhile enough deal. I opened account(super easy and no hardpull) and funded, seems interest starts immediately.

No monthly deposit requirements or debit card transactions required. Just move money in and keep it there at least 90 days. The normal interest is 2.15 currently so that is already what I have a Ally.

I had the account opened no problem and all my reports (incl Chex) are frozen and I didn't unfreeze. So unlikely that is the reason.
Could they have flagged the Marcus opening right before as "too much activity"? Only way they know is if you didn't have Chex frozen.
Another is if there is any mismatch in the information they put in.
Wondering if you wait till near end of period and reapply works. If not, forget it.

Are there any concerns that the end of the 90 day "maintenance period" may overlap with and interfere with a repeat of last year's Ally bonus offer if hypothetically offered again roughly during the same time period as last year? Granted the Marcus bonus is a definite and an Ally repeat is speculative, but the Ally max ended up being $1000 for those with $100K available, so it could have an opportunity cost if one was unable to shift the cash out of Marcus in time.

I pulled all my money out of Marcus - will wait a couple of days and then enroll for the promotion (which it states is when they look at the starting balance) and then put the money back.
I don't know if they will consider this gaming the system or not. I could be doing it for legit reasons (Maybe I pulled all the money out because I decided to move it to a Money-Market elsewhere but then came across the promotion and decided to move it back there instead).

My credit wasn't frozen and neither was my SO. We were both denied, which had never happened to either of us. I also read that others had poor experiences after opened Simple as well. So I wouldn't bother.

Please let me know if anyone successfully opened or funded the Marcus account by transferring (pushing) funds from Vanguard. I typically use an intermediary bank for such actions, but it would be much easier (and potentially less time-consuming) directly from Vanguard. If so, how long did the push take to be recognized in the new Marcus account? Thanks for any insight.

I sold $50k of Treasury Money Makret Fund yesterday. It show up in Aliant Credit Union tomorrow or Monday. I'll transfer to marcus from there.

You need to get Marcus Routing and account number linked at Vanguard. Then you have to 1-2 days to verify trial deposits and another 7 days before you can actually PUSH money from Vanguard to Marcus. As you can see, it may exceed 10 days allowance to fund your Marcus account. Another option is to wire the $ (free from Vanguard and to Marcus also) which is instant.

I transferred directly from vanguard treasury money market to marcus for this promotion. I had linked my Marcus account with vanguard already.

Re: Marcus Bank 1% Bonus for New Funds up to $50k ($500 bonus)

Post by artgerst » Fri Jul 19, 2019 6:58 pm

Read the rules several times and still confused.

Let's say I already have an account at Marcus with 100k.
I enrolled in this bonus plan today.
If I read correctly I have 10 days to deposit money (let's say 50k). At the end of the 10 days,

1) that's when the "Enrollment Account Balance" is calculated?

Now, I currently use this account to pay some bills (15k in 90 days) automatically. So if I followed the current plan I would only qualify for 35k for this bonus. I'm trying to maximize the bonus on 50k.

2) What if I put in 100k from the start? (really 65k - my initial 50k plus the 15k I know will automatically come out). Do I get the full bonus based on the 50k?

3) If #2 doesn't work do I have to put in the extra 15k the day after the "Enrollment Account Balance" is calculated?

Please let me know if anyone successfully opened or funded the Marcus account by transferring (pushing) funds from Vanguard. I typically use an intermediary bank for such actions, but it would be much easier (and potentially less time-consuming) directly from Vanguard. If so, how long did the push take to be recognized in the new Marcus account?
You need to get Marcus Routing and account number linked at Vanguard. Then you have to 1-2 days to verify trial deposits and another 7 days before you can actually PUSH money from Vanguard to Marcus. As you can see, it may exceed 10 days allowance to fund your Marcus account. Another option is to wire the $ (free from Vanguard and to Marcus also) which is instant.
I started the process yesterday at Vanguard to link my new Marcus account to my Vanguard account. No trial deposits yet at end of business day 2. Thanks for the heads up that there is a 7-day waiting period after the trial deposits are made/verified and the link is established.

It looks like Vanguard requires a mailed form to do a wire transfer from Vanguard to an unlinked bank (Marcus). So the wire process might take awhile too.

To be sure I completed funding within 10 business days, I just wired the funds from Vanguard to a previously linked bank and will then pull the funds from Marcus.

Deleted as this would be best in a separate post.

Am going to do this with vanguard funds...though might have to go the wire route. Thought that verfication was set up with my primary bank, but guess not, and now I'm not sure I'll get the money in time to make this work. Might go the wiring route.

Was thinking about signing up wife too, but wasn't sure if this would be considered "gaming the system", signing up two accounts in same household.

It is specifically not considered gaming. If you read through, they say each account titled differently is entitled to the 1% bonus, so an account for yourself, a joint account, and an account for your wife.

CSR said that I can open one joint account with me listed first and another joint account with my wife listed first. Both would be eligible for the bonus.

DW and I have separate Marcus accounts and we both are enrolled in this promotion. Can we open another joint account and avail this bonus?

I applied the 1% to my account, but it would not let me apply it to our joint account. I called and Marcus and was told the other joint account owner had to do it, so he signed up over the phone. Basically, one offer per person, so he could not open a single account and get the offer again since he used his promotion on our joint account.

I successfully opened one (individual) account for me and another (individual) account for my DH. Super easy. I just hope the APY doesn’t go into free fall on July 29 once the promotion ends and they’ve got everyone signed up.

I transferred directly from vanguard treasury money market to marcus for this promotion. I had linked my Marcus account with vanguard already.
Do you link it with Marcus like VG? Just trying to figure out how to send them the money.

Thanks,BB
