HVAC Installation Cost

Post by idealtrucks » Wed Jun 12, 2019 8:36 am

Hi Guys,
I recently built on to my house and of course need an HVAC system for it. The current system in the house is 25 years old, so I'll be replacing it and adding new addition to it.
I've had 2 different companies quote this. 4 ton system, 10 year parts and labor warranty. Both were around $8000. Existing house ductwork isn't being changed, just adding to new addition (576 sq ft).
This seems high to me. What do you all think?

I am getting prices now on replacing a 2 and a 4 ton systems and it seems they're close to what you have. Combined they are running 12,900.00, with variable speed fan with single stage compressors. These are Heil Coastal units that have some corrosion prevention for the salt atmosphere. I did get prices as high as 27,000.00 for Trane and Carrier, variable speed fans and variable speed compressors.
I currently have Carrier and have always tried to focus on the better systems, but consolidation in the HVAC industry has really made it confusing. I don't get much more than 10 years in a unit and as long as it has a warranty I'm not as focused on the manufacture as I used to be. I was interested to see you got labor included in your warranty which I am going to try to get.

Last summer, I installed a Trane XR16 AC and gas furnace. Compressor outside and airhandler in attic. Also added new flexible ductwork.

The total install cost was $7200. Located near Charlotte, NC.

So your $8K is probably not far off. But you should get at least 3 quotes.

I share the OP's surprise at current prices. I just had some HVAC contractors come to look at possible changes to my house. Two of the three mentioned that prices have skyrocketed over the past few years, and most home owners are shocked/amazed at how expensive new systems are. Both said there are a number of factors why prices have increased so much, but didn't go into detail. But they both said that the sticker shock means most home owners get several/many estimates and end up confused and dismayed about the hardware and the installation/service. I am definitely in the confused and dismayed stage.

Thanks for the input guys. I was definitely in the confused and dismayed stage as well. I had another installer come out today to give me a quote. I'll see what he says.

You said HVAC, but only gave us the AC sizing. Is this AC only, or AC+heat? If it heat as well, is it gas, propane, oil, heat pump, or?

This info, plus location and the system make would help us to judge if the price is reasonable. Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean it’s not a market rate....

Some of you folks got some real nice pricing. The Charlotte and Arizona contractors were reputable? $5700 is very low.

My guess is it’s an electric furnace. Still an excellent price.

Yes. My HVAC guy was a company with service techs. They came out and did a Manual J load calculation and got the building permits through the city.

The $5700 one in Phoenix was definitely a good deal.

On a rental property I'm currently rehabbing, I will install a gas pack and new flex ductwork. I've got a "guy on the side," who doesn't work for anybody right now. He will charge me $1500 for all new ductwork and installation of a gas pack I bought used. The gas pack is a 2017 York that I got for $1100.

Its a rental property, but it will have new ducts and "almost new" system for $2600. No permits pulled.
